Plus he’s near the top in scoring, 4 pts in 5 games.

Do we expect him to join the big club? I have come across the name a few times but don’t know anything about his playing style or even his statistics.

Shestyorkin might be our most untouchable prospect at this point. I wouldn't trade him unless a legit superstar was coming back and he was then part of the package to get that superstar.

I love that they knocked the Shestyorkin pick out of the park but I would absolutely move him for a difference maker up front or on the blue line.

Goalies that have won the Cup in the cap era:

Cam Ward
Jean-Sebastien Giguere
Chris Osgood
Marc-Andre Fleury
Antti Niemi
Tim Thomas
Jonathan Quick
Corey Crawford
Matt Murray
Braden Holtby

If you’re suggesting that championship teams no longer build from the net out, I agree, as Holtby is the only truly elite member of the above list — and he was one of the last players to join the Caps core.

Shesterkin has a .972 save % in his 7 games played so far this year. A 0.71 GAA. I ain't trading Shesterkin for Nylander straight up.

On Buchnevich---he hasn't been great. He does set up Smith's tying goal in our only win this year but otherwise that was a pretty quiet game for him and the last game he played his way onto the bench. That was an indication that the team is ready to scratch him so I'm not surprised.

It's not the end of the world if he gets scratched now and again and IMO apart from Fast, Zibanejad, Kreider and Howden we've not got consistent enough efforts from any of our other forwards. It looks like it's Buch's turn in the barrel and it might be Zucc's or Hayes's or Spooner's or Vesey's next. I think we have to get away from this idea that any of our players should be automatic locks to play night in and night out whether they're performing well or not. If it's going to be a long year then I look forward to even Kreider and Zibanejad getting scratched if they start going through the motions too. I don't think we'll have that problem with Fast though. That guy always works and always makes smart choices.

What was the last unproven (at the NHL level, anyway) goalie prospect that was traded for a difference maker up front or on the blue line? Not trying to be snarky, but I don't think this happens all that much. Goalies seem to have the burden of actually having to prove themselves in the NHL first before being worth much of anything.

Tim Thomas had two of the best single-season goaltender performances analytically, including the #1 performance, out of anyone in this era including Lunkers. IIRC

Tim Thomas was also a career journeyman who couldn't land a starting job in the NHL until 33.

I think you're right and for the reasons touched on in this thread. If there is a team out there who has had goalie frustrations the past few years a la the Flyers they might make a good (i.e. desperate) trading partner.

Well, not that you were saying this exactly, but the Flyers have probably the top goalie prospect in the game. Don’t think they’re desperate to trade for a top goalie prospect.

I don’t think you were implying the Flyers would be a good trading partner. Just worth mentioning.

That looks like a list of very good to high end goalies to me outside of like, Niemi. And that Hawks rosters was about as stacked a roster as there could be in the cap era, so it’s a bit of an outlier.

I'm as psyched as anyone for Shestyorkin but those numbers he's putting up are a little skewed. His team is stacked.

I would be very reluctant to anoint him as untouchable or the organization's best prospect until he comes over and plays with the opposite of allstars.

I think Igor has more value to the team than he would in a trade. Current NHL goalies don’t have much value, I can’t see an “unproven” prospect having more value.

Way too early yet but if "Relentless" is the universal word to describe the NYR new model then might have to question does the club have the correct players in place to play a "Relentless" style?

A younger Ryan Callahan would have fit perfect.
A Michael Ferland would have fit perfect but he wasn't a player that was on the block, wait what?
A Jason Zucker perhaps would fit the system.

Thinking aloud here maybe some components to play a Relentless style aren't current employed here...Yet!

That does not appear that is what is going on. He is holding players accountable. He is also trying to put his team into a position for best success.

Until the players get the message, it needs to be taught again. The message seems to be pretty clear.

Who is he alienating? Quinn makes it pretty clear what he wants and he also made it clear what the one item he demands no matter what the results of the game is.

You are throwing bumper stickers out there that I already said people like to do, but can't properly explain what they mean or how they help. How is he holding players accountable by scratching five players? How does that specifically help the players, the hockey team and the rebuild?

You dont trade Igor for Nylander lol.

Proven or not he has the potential to be an all star goalie in the NHL, you don't trade that away.

Fine in what way? He has 7 SOG in 5 games, even Staal has that many. Horrible underlying numbers, and hasn't been setting his teammates up either.

3 points in 5 games playing the minutes he played under AV. Thats not so bad. Not in form the first couple games of the season, but are there more than a handful of players on the whole team who are in form?

Besides, he's never going to be a high SOG player. I don't know why people keep bringing this up. Trying to make good players shoot more is dumb. Let them play their game. You'd prefer he shoots more, but its better to let good hockey players do what has gotten them to where they are than force them to play a style they don't know. The underlying numbers really don't matter, considering its a couple games into the season. He has good career underlying numbers.

In what way are they skewed? It doesn't even make sense. How could SV% be skewed? Its not GAA.

7 shots in 5 games translates to 112 in 80 games. You'd have to shoot at 20% to score 22 goals with that shot count. Buch has a 12.1% career (10.3 last year) - 13.6 goals over a season, I'm sure we'd all be psyched about that lol

It is a perfectly valid point; drivel written in complete sentences and formatted well is still just drivel.

I'd like to see him get a shot at some third pair minutes at some point in the season, if he continues at this pace in Hartford.

This coach has shorter patience/attention span than even the previous 3 line jugglers. Buchnevich looked amazing in preseason, now he is back on the 4th line and on LW instead of his natural RW position. Look at Dallas they just got themselves an amazing coaching staff, we got a bunch of scrubs. How can a rookie coach on a rebuilding team be allowed to scratch young players that should be playing for no reason?

Total time on ice so far this season

Deangelo (22) ~38mins
Pionk(23) ~58mins

McQuaid(32) ~90mins
Staal(31) ~83 mins

I guess I just don't understand how rebuilding or development works.

Think of it like this. A truck with nuclear waste is in a car crash on Manhattan and the nuclear waste leaks out on the street. Guys with yellow plastic suits and face masks come out and keeps the civilians from getting close to the leaked nuclear waste.

Playing for us is the leaked nuclear waste. Quinn is the guys in yellow plastic suits and face masks. Our prospects are the civilians.

But who was driving the truck?!?
