Not sure the Rangers view Howden as their fourth line center of the future.

Part of me thinks we’re all probably reading a bit too much into some of this.

I think the Rangers are interesting in giving each kid learning opportunities right now and aren’t locked into any particular designations at this point.
Wanted to bump this.
Right now howden is a better skater and PK option and just watch, he's gonna get involved. I think as long as he can hang within the first couple games, he'll get about 15 games to see if he can acclimate and man the 4th line for the rest of the season. They view all 3 of these guys as top6 Cs in the future, right now it's just a determination based off what they think is best for the players development and team needs. Chytil is raring to go, they want him to play center, so he gets a chance at 3C. Then who's better suited for 4C here now. For the team and the players development. Howdens skating/PK and knack for being around the puck, and likely long term deployment at 3C, makes the 4C Job if he can handle it ideal. While Andersson can play 1C down there and get together with all the prospects that are Gonna be on the Wolfpack and create an identity at a level they can really hone their craft

Regarding Ds. Most of it, is what it is, wveryone knew it coming in. There was a need for mcquiad. He will rotate if ADA forces his way into playing. Nashville is up first. I get going with mcquad for that game and not throwing ADA in a position to fail

Completely agree and hopefully coaching staff realizes that there’s no need to overthink it.

Skjei - Shattenkirk as a first pair. McQuaid will not make it better, even just on defense. This is clearly where overthinking starts.

Smith - Pionk should be a classic two-way second pair style-wise and vet / rookie combination. See how it does.

Staal - ADA / McQuaid for third pair that rotates on the right side, including Pionk, depending on game factors and circumstances.
My thing with Skjei is, he could be a solid defender, but he thinks he's Erik Karlsson. The organization also seems to think he's Erik Karlsson and keeps trying to put him with super defensive partners (as if McQuaid can even play defense, but don't get me started). Skjei would work better next to a risky offensive player who can move the puck.

To be fair I didn't really like Skjei-Shattenkirk, but first of all, AV. Also Shattenkirk isn't really a flashy player at even strength.

ADA would be perfect but they seem to wanna sit ADA for reasons :dunno:

We are on the same page here. I’d rather have Skjei as a so called second fiddle to a more offensive partner than to be this offensive part of the pair. I just don’t see this much offense in him. Now this is both long term and in the context of the way the Rangers defense is currently constructed. For example, if one of Pionk or ADA played LD then I’d be ok to go back to the “lost” pair Skjei - Smith where Skjei’s role would allow to be more opportunistic on offense.

Remember back when we were trying to get all the Staals, and not desperately trying to get rid of the one we got stuck with?

And the sad irony is that when we finally got a second Staal we misused him, and let the one who could still play leave. and kept the one who is the world's most expensive traffic cone.

Are we going to name anybody captain?

We got a lot of players who were captains at lower levels:

Howden
Staal
Shattenkirk
Beleskey
Vesey
Spooner
O'Gara
Fogarty
Lindgren
Bigras
Day
Nieves
Andersson
Leedahl
Gettinger

Players who make it to the NHL (or even the AHL/ECHL) had a leadership role at one of the teams they played on as kids because they were the best on that team. Even Tanner Glass. Doesn't make them leadership material at this level

Anyway, it is a concern that a 7th overall pick cannot make the team after his 2nd training camp. I know, patience and all that but I would like to see some NHL production out of him this year. Still plenty of time and he will get his chance.

82 games. 41 at home. Just sayin'.

Tarasenko needed 3 years to jump to the NHL. Perry and Getzlaf needed 2 (partly due to the lockout but still...). I had this discussion with someone else earlier today who brought up these 3 as examples as to why "Lias is a bust"

The difference between "Lias Andersson cut from team" and "Lias Andersson makes the big club" is very thin. The availability of ice time in the top 9, the glut of capable centers and top 9 forwards is what decided his assignment. All out of his control. He could beat out Vesey for a spot 10 days out of 10 for a top 9 spot. He's still progressing toward being a good middle six forward. I don't think he needs to be defended or lambasted for being in this predicament.

If nothing else, being demoted to the wolfpack while Fil and Howden are with the big club is going to help him Naruto his way to being a better player.
