Curious where you would rank him overall. Because if it's somewhere close to but outside the top twenty, then I don't know how you could describe him as mediocre.

Honestly, I don't know. I don't know who McDonagh even is at this point. He's been in an absolutely bizarre situation his entire career.

But I don't think you give 8 million and not know what you're getting.

True, which is why I wouldnt even entertain trading him until the draft. But if the same warts in his game persist, I'd rather trade him. Skjei, Miller, and Hayes will all command north of 4 million contracts. But if Chytil can replace Hayes in the line up, thats an extra ~4 million to throw in another area of weakness.

I’d bridge Skjei. Kid has great potential, but we shouldn’t over-estimate it to get a longer deal.

I'd have no problem re-signing him, just don't want to be giving out long-term contracts that extend past like 32, 33, unless its McDonagh, who you have to extend. If he takes like a 3 year year at 4 million, I'd keep him around the team. Otherwise, he can go elsewhere.

Zucc is making 4.5 now and isn’t in decline, so I don’t think that is realistic at all.

Cannot wait for Stastny to be added for the playoff run at the deadline. Although I prefer Henrik Sedin when he realizes his time is running out at a chance for a cup

Depends entirely on how McDonagh plays this year with an actual partner.

Thats what I mean.

McDonagh's been our best player for the 2-3 years now, maybe more, although it was close between him and Hank for a few seasons.

I don't know what you expect of him. Does he need to win the Norris to deserve an overpayment? Unless this team finds a 1D in the next year or two, there is no replacement for him.

McDonagh three years? He'll laugh. He's getting 7.5-8M, probably 7 years. If we don't offer him something around that, he's not going to even consider signing with us. You are asking him to take way too big of a payout.

Maybe he would laugh at a 3 year offer to stay in NY. Maybe we raise it to a 4 year deal. Then again some in the media and on this board said Shatty would never sign here for only 4 years @6.65 mill but he did.

I think guys like McD, Zooks, and Shatty have shown they want to be here and that they may not chase the top dollar if we are close to reasonable.

If I'm giving a 32 year old a multi year contract who the team doesn't actually need (a luxury player), he better take a big pay cut, years and term.

Zucc is one of our top two wingers, I’m every sense of the term. It’s not even close. He’s not a luxury player, unless you think making the playoffs is a luxury.

Our leading scorer is a luxury player who the team doesn't actually need? Better take a big pay cut? I do not think there is a single GM or hockey fan outside of this Rangers board that has ever thought Zooks was overpaid.

There's 20 defenseman I take over McDonagh without thinking twice.

And he's been extremely mediocre the last three years. This is no secret, it just comes down to how much you blame Girardi.

I blame Girardi a lot but you have to prove that you're worth 8 million.

Right now, today, I let McDonagh walk at 8 million in a heartbeat.

I have a feeling I’m going to regret this, but who are the 20 defensemen in this league right now better than McD?

But we have depth at winger, and he's not that good compared to the rest of the league. He's maybe the best winger on the team or second best, but he's like a 60 point player at best, is he even a top 30 winger in the league? And he's likely gonna slow down, so I'm not so sure we need to be paying for a guy who'll likely be our 3rd or 4th best winger by the time his contract is up.

I agree, 6 year contracts after they are 30+ can be too risky, but maybe a 4 years contract with Ryan Mc. Anyway I hope we will sign Martin st. Louis in some sort of a coach position within the org. in some years - his experience is valuable for the org.
@Ori 4 years would be acceptable to me as well. If the team wants McD and McD wants to be here then we should be able to reach a fair deal just like we did with Shatty this past offseason.

I expect him to actually be a 1D which he hasn't been for years.

Girardi is a massive factor in that, but McDonagh has to prove it.

Didn't say he was overpaid. He'll be a luxury player in two years, unless Buchnevich, Miller, Vesey don't improve at all. And there's a good chance Chytil or Andersson are also wingers on this team in a few years, so we can count one of them too.

Gona save this post for the trade deadline. Don’t worry I won’t forget.

From a business angle, it makes sense for the Blues to move Stastny, but he knows he’s underperformed on the UFA contract they signed him to. That, given his family’s LONG history with the city, and the Blues horrible luck with injuries this season, the fact they only have two other notable contracts up at season’s end (both RFAs), and their next center prospect is currently only reaching to 3C, I think he gets extended. No comment needed on Sedin.

PB, JT, and Vesey can all improve. Doesn't mean they will all will be better players than Zooks and no team wins with just 3 wingers. Why did we draft Chytil and Anderson as centers just to play them at wing? Anything is possible in 2 years so not much sense debating it all now. If I was Zooks I would announce this is my final year in the last year of his current deal and retire a Ranger.

Holland doesn’t improve the team. The most he could do is push Desharnais up to 3C if Chytil is sent home. That isn’t an improvement, and if we wanted to do that we’d just call up Nieves.

He's probably better than Desjardins, but we are at 23 without him which I did not realize. Interesting that he hasn't been released from the PTO or signed.

It would make sense to roster either one over Kampfer.

Kreider, Buchnevich, Miller (if he’s not a C) and who will be our other top 4 winger? And don’t say Nash or Grabner.

Karlsson
Burns
Doughty
Subban
OEL
Letang
Hedman
Lindholm
Vlasic
Giordano
Brodie
Keith
Slavin
Jones
Niskanen
Krug
Pietrangelo

Ok now that it's in front of me, 17 for sure and a few others are close.

But I could easily chop this list more than in half or multiply it by three.

I don't know who McDonagh is.

Desjardins is still with us as a formality. He doesn’t have another offer and is still suspended.
