Zooks, at 5'7" and barely 170lbs, has been a top line player in the league for almost half a decade now. He doesn't have great speed, or a great shot, is not out there to hit people, and can't be considered "elite" at anything besides the shootout. AKA, he's doing it all with pure, 100% hockey IQ, and BTW, has played a minimum of 77 games in a full NHL season. This is not the type of player that you worry about breaking down until, much like MSL, there's just that point where he can't do it anymore (at 30 years of age, this is a long ways away). And not to mention that he's a heart and soul player for the Rangers. I'd easily sign him to a contract where he can retire in blue, and he'd probably take a hometown discount. 60pt wingers aren't exactly a dime a dozen anymore.

I'd have no problem re-signing him, just don't want to be giving out long-term contracts that extend past like 32, 33, unless its McDonagh, who you have to extend. If he takes like a 3 year year at 4 million, I'd keep him around the team. Otherwise, he can go elsewhere.

I would prefer shorter deals in general but definitely for guys over 30.

McD: 7mill 3 years
Zooks: 5 mill 2 years

I agree, 6 year contracts after they are 30+ can be too risky, but maybe a 4 years contract with Ryan Mc. Anyway I hope we will sign Martin st. Louis in some sort of a coach position within the org. in some years - his experience is valuable for the org.

McDonagh three years? He'll laugh. He's getting 7.5-8M, probably 7 years. If we don't offer him something around that, he's not going to even consider signing with us. You are asking him to take way too big of a payout.

Why is Desharnais on the PP instead of Chytil or Vesey? I understand the reasoning for Hayes, they don't want him to play PP and PK, but neither Chytil or Vesey are playing PK. Desharnais is lucky to have a spot in the lineup, why would he take the PP spot of top 9 forwards?

Unless something unforeseen develops, the first power-play unit will consist of Shattenkirk, Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider, Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad while the second will feature DeAngelo, Ryan McDonagh, Rick Nash, J.T. Miller and Desharnais.

“Desi is a guy who’s had a lot of experience. He’s a top-end guy that way. He’s a fantastic passer. He’s not a penalty killer, where Kevin is one of our top guys there. And Kevin is going to have a big role [at even strength] playing against the other teams’ top two lines.”

I would give that to 2014 McDonagh.

That's an absolutely disastrous contract to give to 2015-2017 McDonagh.

The thing I got out of this is that at least we won't have to see a third pairing of Staal-Holden

Hopefully Ryan improves without G as pairing - unless, lol ...maybe AV get frustrated mid season and start using Staal with Ryan Mc.

So you want to let a top 10-15 D in the NHL walk for nothing with no replacement?

I don't like giving out big contracts. When its your best player and there's no replacement coming, you have to give it to him.

I see he's still trying to squeeze blood from the "Nash on the powerplay" stone.

Also, I like what Lindy Ruff is doing so far, but if we're going to overhaul the penalty kill, how about stop with god damn Hayes and Miller who were on the ice for over TEN goals against every 60 minutes they were shorthanded.

He's was a top 10-15 D for exactly one season.

He has a ton to prove this year.

Hayes plays one game here or there on the wing, has a bad game, and everyone concludes he's awful there. He's never had an extended period of play as a wing.

Or maybe he never gets an extended look because he is bad there.

Just a thought.

He was a top 5 D that year. Might've settled into the 10-15 range now, but still a 1D.

There's 20 defenseman I take over McDonagh without thinking twice.

And he's been extremely mediocre the last three years. This is no secret, it just comes down to how much you blame Girardi.

I blame Girardi a lot but you have to prove that you're worth 8 million.

Right now, today, I let McDonagh walk at 8 million in a heartbeat.

McDonagh or Shattenkirk, who are you taking?

Curious where you would rank him overall. Because if it's somewhere close to but outside the top twenty, then I don't know how you could describe him as mediocre.
