Staal should be sat down and told he will be waived. Send him to the AHL, save the $1.05m on the cap. They didn't need the cap space this offseason.

Here is how that conversation will go:

Gorton: "Staal, you're going to be waived and sent to Hartford, or some other team will claim you."

Staal: "LOLOLOLOLOL I have a full NMC. Good joke, Gorts."

*Staal leaves the office*

That's fine. He can sit in the press box in the NHL or he can play in the AHL. Up to him. If he feels he is still a NHL defenseman he should want to play somewhere. His call. Play in the AHL or sit in the AHL.

Edit : Seems like several people have already explained the NMC thing :D

No Move means no movement. He cannot be traded, waived, or sent to the AHL (without his approval). The two options for Marc Staal is play him or bench him. Thats it.

Assuming Staal is a disaster we cannot trade and he plays half the year [other half heathy scratch], and only dozen or so games at 3LD [the rest at 4LW with defensively responsible linemates like Fast who can skate...

Ah yes the bern special; immobile declining Dman to 4th line wing. Hockeys back friends!

Staal will take a pass on bus-riding in the AHL, sit in the press box for our club while enjoying all the perks of traveling with an NHL club.

Gorton has to continue what he started with the Zibanejad trade. Continue to get younger. Trade established Rangers for younger players. Don't sign/extend "older" players to long term contracts. Don't sign players in their early 30's to any big contract with McDonagh being the only exception and that depends on the term. Acquire more first round picks. Acquire another 2018 first round pick. I really don't care if the timeline for "winning" doesn't coincide with Lundqvist's timeline. The Rangers have given enough him money over the years and still owe him a kings ransom. If the Russian goaltender comes over after 18-19 and the Rangers are a better team with Shestyorkin starting at some point in the last 2 years of Lundqvist's contract, it's a business.

People go into anaphylactic shock when you suggest trading certain players but Gorton is not afraid to make a big trade changing the dynamics of the team. It needs to be done.

I don't think its a real debate on McDonagh. Gotta give him what he wants. We are in trouble, if we don't. You can't replace a top 10 defenseman in the NHL. I'm all for not overpaying players, especially players that aren't our own players, but when its your captain and best player, you gotta do so.

But the rest I completely agree about.

Great post PB, I agree 100% with what you said. Why no mention of Zucarello? What is your plan for him? I pray that nash is dealt at the deadline we add a First and with one of the firsts we draft a skilled right handed shooting forward.

Zucc is 30. He's been a great servant for the team, but like all of them, you can't sacrifice your team for them. He has two years left on his contract. He'll stay with the team now, but after this season, I think you gotta seriously consider trading him. And if not, he walks the season after or takes a very cheap contract without much term.

The next youngest player I named was McDonagh's who 28. Only player right now who I'd be willing to give a long-term contract because you just can't replace his play within the team. The rest are all 26 or younger, so those guys should be helpful for another 5 years or more.

And along with Zucc, Nash should not be retained after this season, unless you trade Zucc. Smith and Shattenkirk can also be traded in the next few years, as the young defensemen become better, and their roles can be replaced. We can't trade Hank at this point, but if his plays continues to decline, he'll be a back up his last two seasons with the team, maybe even as soon as next season, depending on what Shestyorkin decides to do with his KHL contract. The team will have to figure out a Staal solution, but obviously you want him to go, not sure exactly how they'll be able to get that to happen.

It's business. The guy is still making $5.7m. Should a manager feel bad for an underperforming employee? Most of those people get fired and lose their salary. Staal doesn't even have to worry about that.

Being a business isn’t an excuse to treat people poorly.

It's their own fault for giving him that contract at the end of the day. No one to blame but themselves.

I don't think the conversation has to go nuclear. If he's 7th or worse then he will sit and I think the options for him will be discussed at the appropriate time. The guy has been a club player in good standing for a long time and should be treated as such. This doesn't guarantee ice time but it shouldn't result in ultimatums. My guess is that under AV, Staal will be on the ice as 3LD for better or worse more than he will be in the press box. If I'm wrong then I think that Staal will ask management to seek options to play somewhere else.

Yes, the exact opposite - being in business means that you treat your people with respect and dignity

My goodness, everyone wants to use kid gloves.

The guy has not been one of the 8 best defensemen. Sit him down. Explain the situation. Let the decision be his. I'm not talking about sending him away from hockey and just paying him. The guy has not been able to uphold his end of the contract. The Rangers are going to pay him no matter what. That's not treating him poorly.

You should... or one should.... doesn't necessarily mean that it happens.

Trust me, I've seen absolute sub-human pieces of **** in the business world.

And I've seen respectable professionals that conduct themselves as they should.

At the end of the day, the Rangers are in the business of winning. And you do what you need to do to win.

If Staal has another outing like last year, then I'd just send him home, and spare his dignity by calling it some sort of injury.

$5.7MM, yeah he can eat a little criticism.
