they have Varlomov and Sorokyn
Unless he wins the job outright, Sorokin isn't going to be an Islander next season.

Same way Igor went to Hartford to get reps and he wrestled the starting job away from Lundqvist, Sorokin will do the same in Bridgeport. It's idiotic to let him ride the bench and only play 25 games as the backup.

Cobbling together a team that makes the playoffs.
Not trading Tatar and possibly even Petry at the deadline or even little before that cemented it for them. Then making a "run" for it and losing out on potentially winning the lottery/9th overall pick. Best thing for them would have been to make those trades and acquire few more first rounders.
Too late now. they are stuck in either trying to make the playoffs or finishing just outside of the playoffs.

Why would it matter if he could help the PK if he's never going to play, as some here insist?

I’ll go on record as saying I think he’s going to play.

How much/how long really depends on if the Rangers have access to a top prospect and feel the kid is ready to make a regular jump. That’s an unknown for me.

I expect this team to better overall than last year, but not without some glaring holes still. But I don’t think the season will hinge on Johnson either.

And rumblings AP wants to stay in St. Louis, who also doesn’t have the cap space for him.

Krug, Parayko, Falk, Scandella, Gunnarsson, Bortuzzo and RFA Dunn. Thats 24M.

They’re over the cap currently without Dunn signed. They’d need to find takers for Steen and Bozak or move a player they don’t want to move, and still likely dump a salary, in order to fit AP. If Vegas can’t dump one year of Martinez at 4M, good luck to STL dumping Steen or Bozak at even more money. Same situation applies; why would any GM help them?

December 1 a year from now?
Yes....a serious injury or two could hinder a top 3 spot . The following season we should be even better with some cap space & couple of new guys on the back end and a year of seasoning to some kids ....a slow start out of the gate means bye bye to Quinn .

Would be interesting to see Mete go. He was considered untouchable when he first broke into the league but hasn't progressed much since then. Gotta think the market for Byron at $3.4m isn't great right now.
Definitely hasn't progressed. Looked really good as a 19 year old especially with his speed. would say he would be lucky to have a John Moore type career.

Atta' boy Edge....the wave is blue and growing more and more . Enjoy the ride folks !

Gorton and JD’s quotes seem to confirm that they believe our real window of contention starts with next season, 2021-22. Which has been pretty clear since the decision to buy out Shattenkirk.

Between Shatty’s buyout hit, and Lundqvist’s, Smith and JJ coming off the books, that’s $17m to play with next year. Evaluate our players this year, see where we’re at, then use that $17m to shore up our weaknesses at the deadline and offseason.

That’s what JD is talking about when he’s talking about long term. This team likely isn’t beating Tampa or Boston this year. Which is why I just kind of shrugged at the JJ signing. It’s never been about this year. Maybe we take another step forward, or maybe JJ sucks and gets us another lottery pick, fine by me. Give me another year of solid development with an eye on being a real contender in 2021-22.

I think it comes down to that if the right deal presents itself (UFA or trade) the Rangers will make the move (See Trouba/Panarin).

If nothing does they will look for the bargin bin players that miss out on getting picked up by a team along with some prospects.

That looks like the best scenario for gorton, if ap goes back to the blues and vegas still needs a puck moving defenseman.

I still think Laf is going to be a Center with the Rangers . If he is as good as advertised ....that is the spot for him . We have some great wingers that can make that transition easy enough for him .
0% chance of this happening. He’s played wing his entire life.
