So did Gorton say no big signing coming but will take care of needs so bargain shopping ?

It’s a buyers market right now

Perhaps.

I'm not sure Carolina doesn't also have a bevy of upcoming wing talent that is gonna end up pushing him off the roster as well: Necas, Suzuki, Bokk, Puistola, Rees, Drury, Jarvis, Gunler, Nybeck, Pashin, etc.

Well a lot of those guys are 2-3 years away at least, which fits into the timeline of Fast's contract. However, there's also less of an incentive for Carolina to open up spots for rookies since they're trying to win right now. The Rangers are in the mindset of giving more of an opportunity to the kids. The odds of Fast being the 4th line RW in NY a year from now are probably greater than they are in Carolina. Carolina has also been a team that wasn't shy about letting young players cook in the minors for a few years until they were truly ready. That's why Gauthier was struggling to find a role with them but leapt right onto our roster this year.

Is Wallmark still out there? He would seem to be a nice signing who could play 3C in a pinch.

I truly hope that is what we start doing with some of these kids. Let them marinate for 3 years or so. Will need them for sure to keep the pipeline stocked while guys like Kakko/Lafreniere/Panarin/Zibby/Fox/Shesty lead the way. Other parts will come and go.

We obviously won't make any big signings. Could be a significant trade still, I would think, but we need nearly equal cap going both ways. Most of the teams looking to deal are trying to clear cap space.

It sucks that you can't build a team with good young talent anymore without worrying about the bonuses. 5.5 million for LAF and Kakko. Geez.

of course you can.

there is no way the Rangers could have budgeted for winning the lottery. On top of that, the Kreider resigning was iffy. Take out both the lottery win and Kreider the Rangers are in a good position. Add them both in and they have to save money elsewhere.

Big picture - you cannot pay aging stars and new stars along with multiple high draft picks long term. Cannot happen despite those thinking Eichel is coming here and “worry about the cap later”.

The Rangers cannot pay all these kids and pay those close too and and above 30 years of age. You cannot pay Panarin and resign Zibby and keep Kreider and Trouba and on top of that all the youth.

if this rebuild was all youth, it’s easy. It’s not easy when you sign many veterans. Oh, and have this dead money number. The echos of “at my age” all i want to do is win from a guy who didn’t want to move didn’t help either.

Oh good, a lineup staple next season.

Was never going to be the 7th dman.
Gotta believe he is starting on the bottom pair with ADA and if he has a very good stretch of games maybe get some time with Trouba. I would NOT be shocked.
It's so hard to tell what is gonna happen with guys like Miller because of covid/No AHL as of now. I know Miller looked great last year in the bubble but would rather give him a little more time to develop somewhere besides with the big club.
Are the likes of Hajek good enough to overtake JJ? IDK. Probably not in the managements view.

What they are planning/hoping for doesn't mean it will work out that way. The Rangers gave Smith 4 x 4.35 and before the first year was done, sent him to the AHL. If Johnson doesn't work out, I'm sure they will look for other solutions. I'm sure they are still looking for other options at LD via trade.

I think that's really what we have been doing. Andersson and Kravstov could be the exceptions but the latter was adamant about coming over for the start of last season and the team obliged. Andersson didn't work out for a variety of reasons. Overall though it seems like they're committed to letting kids earn the spot. Which is part of the reason they're shopping the bargain bin in free agency right now. Or, in JMFJ's case, the dumpster out back that the homeless guy uses as a toilet.

So basically sounds like the plan is - sort out and retain the RFAs and that's it. Completely unsurprising.
Is that the worst thing? Let's see how things unfold with a super important year for Chytil. Chytil should have very good wingers either way so if he develops great if not then we really need to figure out the future 2c scenario.
Things will become much more clear before the 2021-2022 season.

But probably on the wise side.

We made our big splash with Panarin. We overspent by admission last year when it was not expected and not needed, because those types simply do not come around often.

Well now we are sitting here without the capital to make "need," moves.

Which is fine. It's better to have a Panarin than to have like, Wennberg, Turris and Greenway, the scraps from this FA period.

I think that is a decent signing for Montreal or they felt the pressure after missing out on Hall.
