NICE. CapFriendly had it queued up and ready to go. :D

So can someone break down the implications of being over the cushion?
Aside from resigning some RFAs they should still be under the cap, no? Would they need to pay a penalty, not play certain players with bonuses or be forced to trade someone to offset going over the cushion?

There’s a whole thread on the topic below the stickies.

Oooohhh f***, I'm looking at it ... further question, regardless of who is up with the NHL, atm we have to add all our ELC contract bonuses together?
Regardless let's add it up and have a look.

Kakko 2.65m
Fox 850k
Chytil 350k
Gauthier 300k

Holy motherf***. 13.209.000$

No, it's only the ones who are actually on the NHL roster. And the first 6.1125 mil doesn't "count". We are allowed to exceed the cap via performance bonuses by that amount. Anything more than that comes out of our available cap space.

I think my point is that it is like them: not because of the money or the term, but because of the type of player and the skillset being valued.

You can agree or disagree that it's worth concern, but you seemed to have missed my point.

He may be like them in skillset but it's not even close in money, term or commitment to the player, therefore the value is not even close to the other players mentioned. People just can't compare the players and not take into consideration the contract. Thats where the value comes into play and why I think people have overreacted. Signing JJ for 1/1 with the option of burying the contract in Hartford is nowhere near the 6x6 given to Staal with a NMC and no way to bury any money. Apples and oranges.

I agree overall, but I think much of the reason for many people's distress about JJ specifically is that we are in such a terrible cap situation because we invested a lot of money into pretty bad players, all defensemen, and all of them were evaluated as 'good' in the same ways JJ is (minus Shattenkirk). Personally, I'm not that worried about JJ sticking around for long, but I think there is plenty of concern in management continuing a trend by signing him as regards how they evaluate defensemen. This year may be a cheap Jack Johnson, but there were obviously equally cheap and way less terrible players available.

So it's great that we're stacking forward talent, but Girardi, Staal, Smith, Shattenkirk, and to an extent, Trouba (who many people, including myself thought came in at too high a number) continue to plague our cap flexibility. Then there's the whiffs (Skjei, McIlrath). That's not to mention the pieces it's lost us on the backend (Stralman, Yandle, now likely DeAngelo). It's not a great look for management that they chose JJ and that over-the-top reaction from fans I think has less to do with the signing in a vacuum but in relation to a long resume of horrific evaluation and cap distribution among defensemen for a decade now.

Still, I do think that frustration is a bit misguided because the big problem with Staal, Girardi and co were that we paid vets for 7 years because what they had done in the past, they had “earned it”.

Under the cap, you can only be successful if you pay players that — will — earn it.

This contract is buriable. If we have problems with this signing — we have all kinds of other problems, because those will only occur if our coaches chooses to play a worthless player over a better player.

Something to consider is your first point.

The Rangers committed big dollars to Panarin, and to a lesser extent Trouba. They have A LOT of young talent and it’s going to cost them over the years to keep that talent.

We might not be players in the UFA sweepstakes for a while - even with money coming off the books.

Not that you're framing it as such, but this is not a bad thing. Extending the young, high-end talent earlier to team-friendly deals is a better way to spend that money more times than not. There will always be opportunities via trade or selective UFA to make a calculated strike or two.

It sucks that you can't build a team with good young talent anymore without worrying about the bonuses. 5.5 million for LAF and Kakko. Geez.
