There is a scene in the episode of the TV show Two and A Half Men tittle “I Can’t Afford Hyenas”, where the comedian Richard Lewis playing Charlie Sheen’s characters accountant explains to Charlie with a water bottle and a styrofoam cup that why Charlie is out of money.
As he slowly pours water in the cup he pokes one small hole in the cup and explains as long as enough water (cap space) is poured in equal or exceed the amount of water (players salaries and bonuses) leaving the cup is equal to or greater, Charlie can maintain his lavish lifestyle.
Then Richard Lewis starts jabbing the cup with the tip of his pencil causing multiple holes and the cup runs dry.
That is the current situation with this team for now.
As a Rangers fan I was not expecting any outside signing of any contract for more than two million or more than two years.

Smith is an upgrade on Staal, but he isn't an upgrade on Skjei.

Unless players take steps forward defensively, this is going to be just as bad a defensive club next year. We also lost one of our best defensive forwards in Fast.

Going to have to score a lot of goals (Should be no problem) and rely on some .930+ goaltending (Also hopefully in the cards) to make it work.

I'm gonna disagree with @Edge a bit. If I'm Mikael Granlund, I'd jump at the Rangers offer (whatever it is. I assume it's a "prove-it" deal.). We just saw Ryan Strome put up nearly 60 points on a line with Panarin. If Granlund signs here (and I'm going to assume that the KZB line remains together), he'd be centering a line with either the best playmaking W in the league and an extremely talented and native countryman in Kakko, OR he'd be centering the first overall pick and (I'm assuming) a physical freak like Gauthier.

I mean if he wants to rebuild his value to his 2017 version, how does he not sign here? I hope his agent has told him that.

He might just not want to play in NY. Additionally, if there are other teams with similar offers on the table, taxes and cost of living come into play.

Just glancing around to teams that might be in on him, the Jackets signed his close friend and mentor in Koivu so that's probably very appealing. They're a good team who keeps making noise in the playoffs. Florida could be offering up a spot next to Barkov which would rebuild his value and he gets better weather along with no state tax. Boston could be entering the fold now that they've missed out on Hall. Plenty of talent for him to work with there and there's a real chance to win next year.

There's a big negative associated with the Rangers right now and that's the lack of stability. Players might not want to sign here knowing that in 6 months they could be hearing their name in deadline rumors. That's not a fun prospect for anyone, let alone the guys with families who are trying to settle into something. Granlund could find himself being dealt once again and the team has probably been very forthcoming in the fact that they see him as a stop-gap and not a long-term solution.

I'd also say that Strome is more of a cautionary tale than an endorsement. The team is trying to trade him and the whole league knows he was propped up by Panarin. I'm sure Granlund and his agent are well aware of that.

Bitetto was just signed. we can use depth from Hartford AHL vets as spare dman.

Yes, but it will cost us more cap space. Sutter's cap hit is only 25k higher than Smith's, but Smith allows us to only carry 1 spare, since we can use him at forward and on both sides on defense. If we make that deal, then we need 2 spare players, one forward and one defense. An extra player will cost 700k at minimum. Maybe Bitetto can be used in a similar way as Smith, and serve as the only spare, but we already know Smith can do it (albeit not that well). At the very least, he's comfortable doing it and has experience at each position.

If Vancouver would be willing to retain 1 mil, then that deal would make more sense, as we could then use that 1 mil to add an extra spare.

JJ's contract is nothing like the big money, big term contracts of other past Dmen.

I think my point is that it is like them: not because of the money or the term, but because of the type of player and the skillset being valued.

You can agree or disagree that it's worth concern, but you seemed to have missed my point.

How does the Sched A and Sched B bonuses work?

Idk. But I found this:

Performance bonuses count against the salary cap; however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5 percent of the upper limit.

NHL CBA FAQ - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

... so it don't matter in the end, because the cap hit + maximum performance bonus cushion is 87.612.500$.

How does the Sched A and Sched B bonuses work?

Sched A are stuff like goals, assists, points, TOI, etc. He can earn bonuses for meeting certain thresholds. Sched B are for awards. Finishing top 3 in the Calder voting, making the all-star team,, etc. You can see the details on page 326 (IIRC) of the CBA.

I agree overall, but I think much of the reason for many people's distress about JJ specifically is that we are in such a terrible cap situation because we invested a lot of money into pretty bad players, all defensemen, and all of them were evaluated as 'good' in the same ways JJ is (minus Shattenkirk). Personally, I'm not that worried about JJ sticking around for long, but I think there is plenty of concern in management continuing a trend by signing him as regards how they evaluate defensemen. This year may be a cheap Jack Johnson, but there were obviously equally cheap and way less terrible players available.

So it's great that we're stacking forward talent, but Girardi, Staal, Smith, Shattenkirk, and to an extent, Trouba (who many people, including myself thought came in at too high a number) continue to plague our cap flexibility. Then there's the whiffs (Skjei, McIlrath). That's not to mention the pieces it's lost us on the backend (Stralman, Yandle, now likely DeAngelo). It's not a great look for management that they chose JJ and that over-the-top reaction from fans I think has less to do with the signing in a vacuum but in relation to a long resume of horrific evaluation and cap distribution among defensemen for a decade now.

I think you are spot on here. This org has been blowing it on defense for quite a while both in the draft, trade and development!

Sanguinetti, Del Zotto? Boyle... McIlrath pick still haunts me. Even going with Schneider at 19 is a sign this organization is unsteady in
their thinking on D. What happened to Miller? Hadjek? Lundkvist? Rykov?

This is exactly what I have been talking about, and we now have an entire thread dedicated to. It DOES matter, because we are over the bonus cushion. We have to account for Laf's performance bonuses, whether they are earned or not. At the end of the year, only the earned ones will matter, but at the beginning of the year, we have to account for them all.

ok, so who else got these potential bonuses? Kakko sure, Fox?

New member here, but have lurked on the boards for awhile. I've been impressed with the past 2 years with what the Rangers have been doing. They are being cautious with the cap and also signing projects that ya never know...might turn things around. Look what we did with Pouliot years ago. Also, some guys are due for raises in the coming years. The biggest issue I see on here, are many are forgetting next years expansion draft. They're signing guys like Johnson/Kinkaid to exempt some of their younger guys that otherwise would've been exposed.

I'd like to see Tony on a 1 year deal, and trade Strome away. Peaked my interest with Wallmark though. Plays in front of the net a lot, and best of all over 50% F/O.

NICE. CapFriendly had it queued up and ready to go. :D
