The challenge for Lemieux will also be his contract. He really didn't take a step forward offensively, and he's probably looking for a deal around $1.2 million plus.

He's in a weird spot in the sense that he's a capable fourth liner, with a shot to be a valuable third liner, but how much are you going to play for that right now.

I firmly believe the Rangers would prefer to hang onto him, it just might be the cost of doing business.

The hope would be that he could be signed for very little and they could at least punt on the idea of moving him for another year or two. I think he brings an element teams need. And his game translates to the playoffs better than many of their forwards. Would be harder to replace than finding 1.2m. If he is moved I would hope it was because they are addressing a bigger need.

I agree and think the Rangers' preferene is not to include him in any deals.

But kind of like the 2019 deadline, they'll get their share of calls concerning him.

Lemieux has taken shifts on the right side in his career.

There's also a lot of chatter than Kreider could see time on the right as well.

I think thats the likely option once Lafreniere gets used to the league.

If the Rangers move on from Georgiev I think they're going to need to find another goalie. If the new season starts in December or January---that's not very far off and it's probably going to at least start in a bubble again. If that's the case it's 30/35 player rosters again as well. You can't have people entering and exiting without quarantining etc. A lot of epidemiologists are expecting an upsurge of Covid cases in the Fall and we're looking at predictions of 400,000 Covid dead by January 1--which is a bit over twice what we have now. So a bubble will no doubt be in Canada again.

To me Henrik has declined to being a mediocre NHL goaltender at this point. I'm not sure he can hold up his end or that he's going to like being the backup goaltender in a bubble existence somewhere in Canada for however long it takes for the United States to get some real control over our pandemic problem. There's a potential for a problem and we could use an insurance goaltender option and Huska ain't it.

For objective reasons (like injuries) or not I can’t help but feel disappointed in Lemieux’s last season. Even as a forth liner I don’t think he was effective. Still young enough to improve but he’s another youngster who could soon find himself on his way out (if he doesn’t become more effective / finds a role for a long stay).

...At least Hank can play in 30 games and you'll get a decent performance from him.

...Finding a solid backup goalie isn't too difficult a task...

Unfortunately, I don’t think this Hank is an effective goaltender anytime, even for 30 games. And making a mistake with a backup goalie could have significant negative consequences on the whole team and the season.

Lemieux is in that awkward territory where you see all the elements of the player he could become, and yet you wonder if he can put them all together.

That's why those physical/pesky types with skill are valued the way they are. They are hard to come by and they sometimes require a lot of patience.

On the flip side, I would caution that a player like Lemieux is easy to over-value as well. It's easy to fall in love with the energy and the attitude, or look at a poker hand that almost has higher value if you can get draw a couple of cards from the deck.

I like Lemieux, but I feel like he once again finds himself in a situation where the sum is somehow less than the parts. This goes back to juniors where, for as good as he was, he didn't quite put everything together the way he probably should've. I'd say that is also a pretty accurate description of his time in the AHL as well. He was good, sometimes very good, but there was just something missing. Fast forward to the NHL where 130 games into his career there's just something that doesn't quite connect there thus far.

There's just always this lingering feeling that there's more there. At some point, maybe there just isn't.

If indeed Lemieux is the cost to move up, and the Rangers take that approach, he would be with his fourth organization in six years since being drafted.

IMHO, not quite enough speed between his ears and his feet (no dirty jokes please) to be more effective. A willing hitter who seemed to always be late to make a difference with his physicality.

Lemeuix will have demand. To me he's not always going 100% every shift. If he did that, played a hard game, every shift... he's a very good player. He gets moved if he's as irritating off the ice as he is on the ice, but can't match the productivity.

Which isn't bad at all.

Contract aside, wouldn’t trading Lemieux be counter-productive seeing as how the Rangers performed in the playoffs? We’d still be looking for a bottom 6 energy guy who can hit, fight and shit stir the other team.

This is just a fallacy - I mean, as bad as this season was for Lundqvist, he was still 38th in Save % (24+ games played) in a 31 team league. Tied or below him? Fleury, Quick, Bobrovsky, Murray, Holtby, etc...

Is he Hank of old? Hell, no. Is he a viable 2? Of course he is.

I know you're in the know, but ultimately I think one of Kreider/Panarin will shift to the left side.

Word missing is “effective”. If the Rangers were to move him they’d be looking for an upgrade.

To me it's kinda simple with Lemieux. He's at his best when he's going all out with no hesitation. It's when we put him in situations where he has to think or rely on hockey sense where he seems less effective. He starts following the play as opposed to driving it.

Thats why he was so effective when he first came over. He just went all out and his impact was apparent. And why, even in his one game against CAR, he seemed more effective in a playoff setting.

The downside is, you just cant play that way all year round. It's a durability issue. You can also get away with more questionable physical contact in the playoffs that might be a penalty in the regular season.

I dont see him being anything more than a bottom 6 guy who gets under the opponents skin and plays with an edge. I think that's pretty valuable until he starts making over 1.5. Then the cost/benefit analysis kicks in.

Calgary and Rangers have had quite a bit of talks. I’d be surprised if they didn’t at least check-in with each other again.

I’d keep an eye on Buffalo and Toronto.

A salary neutral trade:

Smith (w. retention) for Jankowski makes a lot of sense.

I guess we have a difference in the definition of “effective”

P.S. If Lundqvist was to stay and play about 30 games I’d surely want his save percentage rank to be better than 38th. These names that you threw out were universally thought of having a down year. At least a few will do better next season. Hank? I wouldn’t put my money on it and how he’s been trending for the last few years.

I don’t recall many posts discussing how Panarin would fare if moved to the RW. Thoughts?

Yeah, Corsi is the end all be all for sure. Pionk was a better player than Panarin this season as well.

For starters, the Rangers were a terrible Corsi team compared to Winnipeg and a better team in the regular season. Corsi is not an individual statistic. Trouba’s game started in his own end of the ice far more frequently than Pionk which has a huge effect on Corsi at the individual level, but it’s still a team-driven stat.

Also, chill with the snarky comments. Save the trolling for reddit.

There are non Corsi analytics that will tell you WPG had the word prevent defense in the league, and also got the best goaltending in the league. Watch the pair of Samberg-Hamonic push Pionk down to the line-up next year.

Hell Dylan Demelo already did it this year.

I’d be less inclined to trade Lemieux, specifically given his ability to play both wings. This was technically his first dull season in the NHL after a decent stretch after the trade last year and some VERY limited minutes in Winnipeg. I’d probably be more inclined to be looking for more guys who can play that effective depth role. Say someone like Clifford.

If the team truly believes Kreider can play on the right, I’m much more inclined to say Buch is the guy to go.
