Let's assume for a minute that William Nylander and Clayton Keller are both available and will cost the same in terms of assets. Who do you choose and why?

I'd probably pass on both and look for a cheaper option.

I would not be excited about adding Clayton Keller because of his size. I think we have tons of skill upfront, what we need are defensively responsible, truculent center who can win draws and hang well enough with Panarin, Laf and Kakko.

Probably neither, but in an either/or scenario, I'd go with Nylander.

I think he's more likely to slide into a RW role where he can post 30-40 goals and 80+ points as this team comes together.

Keller I think doesn't really displace any of our LWs, and at this point is a guy who is trying to get back to where Nylander already more or less is, to say nothing about going beyond that to where Nylander might be able to go with a team like us.

2-3 months? I was thinking 1-2 years.

re: Strome - I just think it's bad asset management. He has value and you are creating a giant hole in the roster. It falls into that category of "if you have to make another move/trade to justify this trade, it's probably not a good trade you want to make." Also, if you are acquiring the 8OA, the 21OA is most likely going into the trade. A lot of the Strome situation depends on what sort of extension numbers we are talking about. And if signed, does that give him more or less value?
What move do they need to make to replace Strome? Acquiring Monahan/Lindholm would be considered an upgrade to Strome as the 2C making him expendable as we hope. And then you are also getting a potential future 2C. No I don’t think Lundell is 2 years away. 1 year at the most and you can have him slide in as your 3C. I’d say that is incredible value as far as a return goes for Strome. Unless of course you are someone that is a Strome fan and really dont want to see him go. Lundell for him while upgrading to Monahan/Lindholm would be a +++ for this organization moving forward.

i would be fine with Canes pick in a package for Chychrun, to play along side Trouba
I have not been on the 'fix left D now' bandwagon, but this may be a rare opportunity

I’m thinking they’re going to keep as many young assets as they can b/c they won’t be adding much over the next few years. Rough spot as they have some vets like Stepan which i don’t see in demand.

As the wingers who are above Buch on the eventual payscale go, there is Panarin, Lafreniere, Kakko, Kreider, a decent chance of Kravtsov, and who knows who else ends up being acquired? Buch's value to us is ultimately a third line wing+++, but nonetheless a third liner. Even if he is the "second best RW" on the roster, the roster can't keep him if he's on a second line winger contract. Instead, we would more efficiently role three scoring lines with Kreider as a third line wing+++, and we'd fill in the right hand sides with, like..... Jesper Fast types.
You keep coming back to this and have a belief that positions are fungible. They are not. Buchnevich was going to 55 points last year. That is NOT a third line wing. He very much can play on the top line, whether you like it or not.

Panarin, Lafreniere, Kreider ALL play on the opposite side of the ice. Left wings and right wings are not fungible.

There certainly is Kakko and we all expect him to take his place on the top lines soon enough. But Kravstov? He should play one second of an NHL game first, no? And players like Fast do not belong in the top 6.

Ooooh, not an easy decision from my POV.

Both should be used as centers for us to start with. I like both but both have shown some weaknesses kind of from opposite directions. Nyls is almost over trained, a bit top heavy reducing agility. Super talented but everything don’t come super natural on the ice during games.

For Keller everything comes super natural but from afar at least it doesn’t seem like he has put in that extreme work to take the next steps. Haven’t seen much development the last 3 years. Can he become a guy that skates head to head a PO series against a Aho or Barzal or Bergeron or someone like that? Got to show a lot more to get there? Can Nyls become that guy? Well who knows with that family.

After some consideration I would probably go with Nyls.

Arizona is in a weird spot.

They were perpetually rebuilding under Chayka, got a taste of the playoffs this year and have a bunch of old guys signed for another year.

Their farm blows, they have no draft picks for the next 2 years. How long do they think they have to get this turned around? It may benefit them to just tear it down and start over for real under the watch of someone who isn't a dope.

I bet Phil is back in Pitsburgh before the 21 season ends.

I actually don’t quite agree with the evaluation of Chyaka. They have had no money. Cap space has been eaten up by guys like Datsyuk, Marian Hossa and Pronger. This league is hard as it is, if you have 15-20 m less to spend than the rest it’s a lot harder. Remember that you also are reward for doing the right things in this league, building culture, developing kids better if you are good etc etc. Since they haven’t lucked out getting top picks I think getting more out of that organization than they have would have taken a miracle. JMHO.

1. I think it's holding steady, I don't think it's gone up or down. I also think a lot of teams, including the Rangers think Buch is the type of support guy whose production can climb significantly as a team's core comes online around him...

I think about it this way: Rangers' ask for a top-6-9 OA as a return for Buch didn't change but other teams (in last year's Edmonton position) would be more comfortable now to part with a pick.
