Mcdavid and Quinn Hughes are my targets, may as well add Makar and Mackinnon too. I think we could do it if we make a bunch of deals on HF that heavy favour our side and totally ignore the fact that neither team has any interest in moving them. If you wanna add Monohan or whatever other franchise player you want, we have an unlimited ability to offer trades nobody would accept and a seemingly endless cap space

Yes Monahan is very comparable to McDavid/MacKinnon/Makar being traded

there’s already been smoke about him being available but you’re not exactly among the highest wattages here so it’s ok

Calgary isn't trading Monohan or Tkachuk without a massive overpayment so we may as well shoot for the stars if we are talking about dumb ideas for trades. The smoke you are seeing is your overactive mind on overdrive.

In terms of pure fit, I think he's my top target as well. I completely agree that he'd be an ideal fit with Panarin. A lefty with a great shot and a power-forward mentality is basically exactly what we need. The only real hang-up I have is whether or not we really need to target such a perfect fit. Especially considering what it will likely cost us to get him. If we're looking for a guy to slot between Panarin and Kakko, does it really need to be a guy of that quality/cost or can we get by with someone a bit less expensive and is more of a passenger to two elite wingers? Especially if we can get someone who is more versatile and reliable in his own end?

Thats the big question isn't it?

I'd like to think that someone less expensive and more well rounded would be the proper fit. How bad would a line of Panarin-Monahan-Kakko get thumped in their own end? I realize that the same issue exists with Strome centering those 2, but is the offensive upside worth the 2+ mill you'd add to the cap and the assets you'd need to trade to get Monahan?

Stand by going for Larkin. Detroit won't be good for another 4 to 5 years and he'll be 30. No issues giving up TDA, Chytil and Buchnevich for him. None. He's worth it.
Larkin and Kreider do have chemistry from their USA Hockey.
i would love Larkin but I bet he is the Wings next captain or would cost way too much to get him

Are we ready to commit to a player like Danault? Are we at that point in our rebuild where we are 1-2 players away to compete for the play offs? If the answer is "yes", then go for Danault
To compete for the playoffs or to compete for the Cup? They are likely (providing all goes well) several years away from being the latter. But the former? Sure. Why not? I think that as constituted, they are a cusp team next year and a legit playoff contender the year after that.

Don't forget signing of Barkov and how that will help cap space. Right after they trade established top line players for Newhook.

What about something like this for the Rangers:

Hank for Allen + Bozak

Rangers:
Move out $8.5m cap hit
Move out $5.5m in salary

Blues
Move out $9.35m in cap hit
Move out $9.25m in salary

If the Rangers buyout Allen immediately, that's the following breakdown for a buyout:

As compared to Hank's buyout:

The Blues save quite a bit of real money in this deal and create a bit of cap room (.85m).

The Rangers add a depth 3C in Bozak for a season and the buyout penalties are smaller both this year and next.

Hank would view it as an opportunity to go directly to a team competing for The Cup with a goaltending spot that could be had for the playoffs. Binnington and Hank could split time during the season.

Well, in all honesty, you could put Patrice Bergeron in between those guys and they'd still probably bleed shot attempts. One guy, even at center, isn't going to move the needle that much unless his wingers also elevate their defensive game. I also hope we'll see some adjustments in the overall defensive structure that will lead to better defensive metrics overall. Perhaps they start with something simple like not giving up the blue line like it's a yellow Starburst.

The other thing is that we all as fans love to project lines before the season starts and we're almost always wrong. So while we assume we'd bring in a guy to skate with Panarin, it could very well not work out like that. That's why I would be looking for someone with positional versatility, that also might not look out of place centering a 3rd line or even skating as a winger. Bringing in someone like Monahan is a huge swing and really great on paper but if he and Panarin are like oil and water suddenly things are way out of whack.

One of the reasons I am just not in a hurry to run out and move Strome yet. Not to mention the price differential.

Yellow starburst is way better than orange

monahan would cost a ton in a trade...he would be a good fit offensively and has a decent contract for a few more years. looking at our needs though I wouldn't be made though if that C option was better defensively and killed penalties to help take pressure off mika

I'm less worried about the fit of Monahan+Panarin (if he meshed with Gaudreau, he'll do just fine with Panarin. Plus Panarin can create chemistry with a trash can if he needed to) but its really just adding to a strength that this team already has while ignoring all of the issues.

It's hard not to get carried away with visions of 2 40+ goal scorers in your top 6, but is it necessary? No. I'd rather add Danault tbh since he actually excels in a bunch of the things the Rangers collectively suck at and would come cheaper.

Definitely sick of people who think DeAngelo is 100% replaceable. Just saying.

I've seen a number of these posted lately. I haven't managed to find a full methodology or a research paper that describes how this was generated. Do you happen to know if one exists?

Yeah, I think we've really moved into the phase of targeting our acquisitions, rather than just simply needing good players. It's the reason why Elias Lindholm makes a lot more sense as a target out of Calgary than Monahan. It's about adding some defensive acumen to the forward group (and not just to the 4th line).

Nah, if the Rangers trade for Bozak I lose a bet.

Stolarz, however, is always open as a backup if we're interested in acquiring a guy whose neck is wider than his head.

For sure, but I doubt Lindholms availability. It makes all the sense in the world for Calagary to move on from players in the Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Jankowski group while building around Tkachuk and Lindholm up front.

The Rangers were a legit AF offensive team after the new year. 5th in xGF (10th in actual GF) 5v5 with the best pp in the league over that time frame. I know that the bubble games made it seem like they were 1OA pick worthy, but for almost half a seasons worth of games, scoring wasn't a problem.

Adding offense to an already productive offense is well... Not a bad thing, but I'm 100% in agreement that we need to add some diversity amongst the top 9 (and put together an actual 4th line.) Having legitimate star players is nice (and if we're honest, necessary to win in this league) but the supporting cast isn't utilitarian enough.

While I tend to agree I'm always a little bit gun shy when it comes to assuming great players can play with anyone. We've seen our fair share of elite players in NY who couldn't find chemistry with others. Jagr and Gomez/Drury immediately come to mind. So while it's likely they'd work, it's far from a certainty. So as mentioned, it could be a costly mistake.

The crazy thing is that if/when Lafreniere suits up for the Rangers, you could potentially be looking at 5 guy who can score 30+ goals in your top-six with Panarin, Kreider, Zibanjead, Kakko, and Lafreniere. Hell, 4 of those guys have the ability to score 40 if there was enough ice time to go around. So you're right that adding a caliber of player like Monahan is probably an exercise in excess, instead of a logical progression.
