Here's an idea for 2C help; my old buddy who this board accuses me of man crushing on Andreas Athanasiou.

Maybe something around him and Chiason coming to the Rangers for Buch +? Him and Buch are very close in age.

I think he'd fit this system well, he PKs, and would work well with one any of the LW riches.

He can also play wing which is great because if Chytil takes the next step, AA is still useful and Strome let's be real is only here for one more year. It's a win for Edmonton because they get an extra year for having to worry about arbitration.

AA needs a change of scenery and he's someone who can help for the foreseeable future.

Holland would drive him to new York to get rid of him. No thanks, that guy just can't figure it out.

He's played on some really awful teams and scored 30G once.

Is it known for a fact he's not being tendered?

Reclamation project and a half.

They are pretty disappointed with him, I don't think they have the cap space to keep someone as a reclamation project.

Not surprised at the Toronto trade or the timing of it, just a little confused at the partner. Pittsburgh must know the league will bail them out when they suck again and start to go bankrupt again.

Danault was not happy that his role in Montreal changed during the playoffs. We've been on the Domi train for a while, but is it possible to make a move for him? Danault is a solid offensive player, but is very strong defensively. We could definitely use him moving forward, especially for the next few seasons.

I would definitely see if Montreal is looking to move him out. Kotkaniemi and Suzuki will be their top 6 centers for a while. Whether it be for pieces or a player swap (possibly Buchnevich). One year left, probably look to get him extended for a few more seasons. Good cap hit. 50 point center sliding behind Zibanejad and in front of Chytil, lets Fil grow into eventually taking that job OR gives the team incredible center depth 1-3 if Chytil takes off.

There is a top 6 role available in Montreal. Drouin, Gallagher, and Tatar are their top 6 wingers. Tatar has 1 year left on his deal. Gallagher has 1. Buchnevich could be a guy they get signed for a longer term piece. I'm the last guy that wants to trade him, but we need a center and so many wingers are going to take his role when this team is contending.

Updated: Year's left on deals, probably look to short term Danault if they can

I think the news flash would be "Danault not happy with his role on the Rangers"
He won't take over Strome's job and no guarantee he can do better. If Strome keeps up his production, he puts himself into that Derek Stepan 1B/2A center position. Danault has not shown he can be much better than that himself. So unless you seeing replacing Strome for Danault as an improvement, I don't see pursuing him as a good roster move. If you have him take over as the 3rd line center, maybe but again, he's not going to be very happy with that role here over that role in MTL. Also, only 1 year left on his contract. Summary, at present Strome > Danault

Without going in depth on full trade details, my ideal moves would revolve around the following:

Strome + Jones/Robertson + 2021 2nd round pick to BUF for the 8th overall.

Buchnevich + CAR 1st for Lindholm

Trade Smith to a cap floor team. Ottawa?

Draft Lundell.

Sign Dillon. Extend DeAngelo.
If you draft Lundell which I am all for (not sure about that trade though) it is highly unlikely he is going to make the team right out of camp. He's most likely to still be playing in SHL next season.

I doubt it too, but if we can put differences aside, I'd welcome him back. He's a good guy and a decent player. We're already paying him 6M next year. He shouldn't have been bought out in the first place.
I didn't like the buyout either but it did work out ok for everyone.

I’ve been paying a little extra attention to Cirelli since his name started coming up on here.

Not saying it would be justified...but I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that he would be a “candidate of much debate” on here and elsewhere in the NYR universe if they gave up a big package for him.

People would expect a very good 2C, and I’d even say would likely get that, but I’m not sure the expectations would live up to the game in, game out viewings. Parallels to Trouba in some ways.

Yeah, I am on the same page. To make matters worse, if its an offer sheet we just know the talk about him would be unparalleled. Would have been a great add and I really like him as a player, but not sure he should be made the center of something big.

Sergachev is really breaking out for Tampa right now. Playing legit 1D hockey. Being a big physical presence. One play had him sending Chara flying with an offensive hit. Its a long way there. But Tampa raided us for players for a long time and now they have no cap space. If their negotiations with Sergachev reach and impasse and they cannot create a lot of mobility under the cap -- I don't really see how they could do that, except maybe if they could pull off a Stamkos trade fast -- he could be a prime RFA target. A 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd for 7.5m per and 3 years.

I like Danault but he’s going to get overpaid. He may actually earn it, in the end. But still, I don’t want to pay out that UFA deal for a middle 6 center. He’s great value right now though. (Sad that ‘value’/cost is so important but I get it).

I don't have a problem paying a 28-year old center for 5 years. The problem comes when you are paying players in their 30s for 7 or 8 years. Danault serves a purpose. He fills a need. The only question I have is:

Are we ready to commit to a player like Danault? Are we at that point in our rebuild where we are 1-2 players away to compete for the play offs? If the answer is "yes", then go for Danault

Nope next years clearly a rebuild IMO. If they get a younger 2C that is signed Signed or RFA great otherwise it doesn’t make sense to me

RNH w a signed extension or Monahan over Danault

Very fair question. With whatever move we make today, we risk standing there in 2-3 years with a log jam in one area and a need in another.

The Bolded is the key part. Along with weighing what the cost to acquire would be getting added to the equation above. If you are still 1 year away from being a serious contender because maybe you don’t sort out your D situation fully this year and your youth still needs a little more time to have major impacts, then you really only get 1 year of Danault. And then what happens next? What if he demands $6 million +? I can’t justify $6 million + for a middle 6 center. I think you can find cheaper stopgap options until the right player either develops or becomes available via trade. And you could still get that similar role filled by the much cheaper stopgap option.

RNH is going to want a raise. For me I think the targets are either Elias Lindholm or Monahan. Maybe someone else becomes available. Maybe they can pry Nylander out of Toronto to be a 2C, but is he really a 2C... I am weary of Danault just because of his contract situation. If he was locked up for 3-4 more years at that cap hit then I would be more inclined to pay a price to MTL.

I agree in that Lundell wouldnt be available until 2-3 months into next season. And you really cant plan around that. Going to be very interesting how that shakes out for a lot of teams btw. A lot of the European Leagues will be ending around March. The NHL, if it wants to play its 82 game schedule because of a new TV deal, will probably be just over the halfway point of the regular season. You might see a lot Euro Prospects joining the NHL teams for practice only until a spot/need presents itself.

So you would have to consider Chytil at 3C and promote another young winger. Or you sign a veteran stopgap for 3C or winger as well.

As for the Strome trade, you think not enough?

There are factors that could drop Lundell past 10. The first 3 are almost undoubtedly Lafreniere, Stutzle and Byfield. There are other centers who might go before Lundell--Rossi, Perfetti--defenseman Drysdale and potentially Sanderson and Schneider who might go before Lundell. Someone might take Askarov. And then there are teams who probably take wingers like Buffalo and New Jersey and here we're talking about Raymond, Holtz and Quinn. If it plays out this way and there's another reach or two like Jarvis for an example Lundell could be sitting around at 14/15.

I think if Lundell is high on your board as far as centers go, I would be trying to get as high as I can to be in a position to select him even if he would have fallen to 10-15. Don’t know it we can swing it but that is my hope for draft day beyond Lafreniere.

An all in scenario (not as ridiculous as my previous proposals in this thread, from my POV at least lol):

1. Hank retires, buy-out Staal and trade Smith with full retention.

2. Lemieux, Buch @50%, Nils Lundkvist and Carolina 1st for William Nylander

3. Acquire Sergachev through an offer sheet, 5 years and 7.5m per. Compensation 1st round pick, 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick.

4. Lock-up TDA long-term.

5. Resign Fast

6. Auction Strome for picks

7. Bargain hunt 4th line depth. Guys that can play.

Line-up:
Kreider-Ziba-Kakko
Laf-Nylander-Panarin
Howden-Chytil-Gauthier
TBD-TBD-Fast
Serga-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
K’Andre-TDA

Protect:
Kreider
Ziba
Nyls
Panarin
Serga
Trouba
Fox
TDA
+
Shest
(Chytil and Lindgren among availables)

Comments:

Nyls being available is of course dependent if Pieterangelo wants to return home to Toronto. If he is, I like him. Didn’t think he was a fit at all recently, but I’ve changed my mind. Look, 6.9m is basically a bargain for a top 2 line center nowadays. He makes us less dependable on Ziba.

We really provide strong support for Laf and Kakko. And listen, they need that. This is a tough league to play in. Sure we pay through the nose and make sacrifices. But these two lines for them, they are close to optimal from my POV.

Getting Sergachev at 7m is a big add cap wise over what we potentially could get by with. At the same time, a Serg-Trouba pairing would over the coming 5 years be as solid as they get.

We would be tight against the cap with Shesty’s RFA deal next summer and Fox and Kakko’s RFA deals in the summer of 22’ and Laf in 23’ and Ziba’s UFA deal in 22’. But the buy-outs are coming of the cap and we wouldn’t be completely without mobility.

Nyls, Panarin, Ziba and Kreider totals 30.5m. Let’s say that Serga, Trouba and TDA totals 22m. 7 players. 14 roster spot left and 30m to spend. We aren’t getting under 1m per on average for any fillers. That leaves 16m to dish out in raises along the way to Shesty (21’), Fox (22’), Kakko (22’), Ziba (22’) and Laf (23’) for as long as the cap remain flat. Long-term that is not sustainable. But at the same time, the cap can’t remain flat forever.

And note, through the summer of 23’ none of Sergachev, TDA, Fox and Shesty can have NMCs/NTCs in their contract. And William Nylander’s NTC doesn’t even kick in before June 30, 2023. So Gorton would keep a lot of doors open so to speak. The deciding factor with these two deals for me is, we aren’t commiting to anything before Laf resigns the first time. We add Nylander and Sergachev with contract and term, yes, but we should be able to get back what we paid for them (quite possibly more) in the summer of 23’ if we want to. Just more options, we spread the risk.

What this break down also shows is what a tremendous risk it is to add someone — that cannot be moved. Those contracts mentioned have to be handled and we won’t have much to work with.
