We have so much money coming off the books next year that keeping him really wouldn't be a problem.

Even if he's "peaked" hes a good bet to be a quality middle 6 center who provides pretty much everything we need for a while.

I don't think we'd trade for him with out having an idea of what he was looking for and the confidence to get him signed when eligible.
I completely get wanting to make us more defensively sound and helping the center depth down the middle. But I just don’t see Danault as the right move for this team for where they are right now, which is not on the cusp of Stanley Cup contention. Danault is going to turn 28 in February of his contract year. He is making $3.08 AAV right now and is surely going to want a raise with a multi-year deal. What does that extension look like? Is it over $5 million per year at 3-4 years? Taking him from his age 29 season thru age 33? And then you factor in cost to potentially acquire him right now. It would have to be a very reasonable deal imo. You simply cannot be giving up high valued assets here and I just dont think we find common ground with MTL for that reasonable deal.

Would rather explore other options for down the middle.

Without going in depth on full trade details, my ideal moves would revolve around the following:

Strome + Jones/Robertson + 2021 2nd round pick to BUF for the 8th overall.

Buchnevich + CAR 1st for Lindholm

Trade Smith to a cap floor team. Ottawa?

Draft Lundell.

Sign Dillon. Extend DeAngelo.

Lafreniere-Zib-Gauthier
Panarin-Lindholm-Kakko
Kreider-Lundell-Chytil
Lemieux-Howden-Fast/Barron

Dillon-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Miller-DeAngelo

Probably should swap Chytil with Gauthier. And then Miller with Dillon for balance between O/D partners.

Edit: I’d be happy to include Howden in any of the package deals and replace with a stopgap vet like Brian Boyle until we develop our own from within. Whether it be Khodorenko, Henriksson, etc.

what super high valued assets are they giving up? Draft picks are valuable but not really something we need to worry about, we’ve had a ton and still have a bunch. 2nd 3rd tier prospects and redundant roster players shouldn’t be given away, but should be used to fill holes that exist.

I’d gladly pay more for a better option.

I was listening to CJB earlier. He said the Leafs should be in the market for Pietro but admitted the price might be a tad high. Then he was talking about the 15th pick the Leafs acquired and he said there is a dman in the draft who could be there who he projects to be like Trouba "and who wouldn't want to have a Jacob Trouba". So as I sat there with my arm stretched as high as physically possible, I thought maybe for the love of god we can pull this off.

The Rangers aren’t raising their hands like you are.

For us less cool folks who aren't in the know, would you mind telling us who CJB is?

We didn't want to give him $7m/year to be a good 2C because we were selling off everything that wasn't bolted down
I think its pretty clear that Hayes wasn't worth the contract that Philly gave him. To our credit, we took the 20OA and Lemieux rather than give it to him. Mika had a lot of market value, but we didnt move him. Why not? Because he produces like a 1C. Hayes wasn't projecting as a great 2C, more like an ok 2C or a ideal 3C. Its good business to not give 2C money to a 3C.

Well considering that Kapanen basically brought back 15 and a recent 2nd round pick, I would think Buch+21-24 has more value than 14.
I don't think Buchnevich is as good as Kapanen. I like Buch and I hope other GMs don't agree me. But I think Kapanen will be terrific for Pittsburgh.

We're not getting 15OA for Trouba. You can only win the lottery once per season, I'm pretty sure.

Buchnevich is a better Top 6 option, Kapanen a better bottom 6 option. Different types of players

Well there was a rumor last draft around Buchnevich for a top-10 pick.

Buch has been getting better with every season. He helps drive play. He scored 37 EV points this year in 68 games; That’s massive. He saw a huge jump in ice-time this season. If Buch played on the PP1 this year he would have easily hit 50-55 points in 68 games, i.e. 60+ points over a full season.

I basically want to be looking at under 25 guys.

This is actually my issue with Buch. He is a good passer and even could be a good trigger man, I think. But I don’t see him as a guy who drives play, so to speak. He can fill out a top six line for sure. But I see a guy like Kapanen as someone who can actually lug the puck and make some space. Which I value more. Again, not saying it’s a definitive thing and everyone has their own preferences. Just my opinion.
