Buch, Lias and Georgiev for Monahan

I still don't think this is enough but still done.

It lops off 3 mill of our open space (Buch out, Monahan in), but it also creates a situation where Strome is no longer necessary.

DeAngelo could still get paid AND they still have room to do things with out needing to buy anyone out/rely on retirements.

Strome could move to RW or maybe he gets dealt for an LD who can play next to Trouba.

I think Monahan would be a great 2C, I like a lot of individual players on Calgary, weird that they couldnt get it together. Lindholm, Monahan, Jankowski, Hanifin, even Bennett would all be serviceable for this team. I think any trade with Calgary would be a good match right now as long as we dont comically overpay.

Do people not consider that DeAngelo could also regress?

As folks have mentioned here, it’s not a coincidence that Tony had his best year the same time as Strome, Panarin and others

Just some food for thought lol

It was the first time he went into a season where he had a secure spot on the team. During the previous season, there were multiple times he was a healthy scratch for the team. This was really the first time he knew he'd be in the lineup. Everyone was also predicting a breakout from him this season with the added firepower up front and stability in the lineup.

He was pacing 64 points over 82 games. He missed a few games, so he was pacing 62 points over 80 games.

Is Tony that kind of player or is he more of a 50 point guy? Either way, both are extremely valuable. If it nets the team a legitimate 2nd line center with upside, then that trade should be explored, but we'll see how the market unfolds and what DeAngelo actually wants in a contract. Don't expect a discount. He took one this offseason. He should have made way more than 925K.

Monahan is the type of player I’d want back in a DeAngelo trade.

I think this is probably a more realistic base. Looking at Calgary's lineup they only seem to have 1 defender thats a righty. So I can see that being a really good fit for them.

I have not seen that issue with Panarin requiring us to acquire multiple other high priced players to be effective.

Weird. Almost like they're entirely different positions with entirely different dynamics.

Also not sure where the "must be high priced" line-item got added to a Trouba partner.

Yeah honestly if something happens we're more likely to see a swap like Monahan+Bennett for DeAngelo+Buch/Strome.

Anyone still eating at Ceasar's? Maybe Detroit will be a budget team next season...

Mantha is a Qubeck kid like Laf.

I think this type of deal would be predicated on someone like ADA being moved for a center. Say for arguments sake that is Elias Lindholm +.

As far as Brodie is concerned I’m less concerned with who he specifically plays with as I am just finding a good two-way d-man. An argument could be made that a Lindgren-Trouba pairing makes sense while a Bronson-Fox pairing makes sense as well
Elias Lindholm is not a center. He is a right wing. Also I’m not really a fan in general of deals that solve one hole buy creating another hole. That’s how to lose assets really quickly. Would be careful about that.

Not at all

I don't think Tony is in the same category as Strome in that sense. Strome is absolutely a passenger.

We're talking about regression, I'm just throwing out there I don't believe it's unreasonable to say Tony may regress a bit next year, in the same way Panarin or Strome (for example) may regress a bit

I guess it depends on what you call regression. Do we expect that Panarin to have another 100+ points next season or "regress" to 80-90 range? To me this is not a regression. And similar thought process should apply to ADA, Strome etc with specific caveats for each player.

If Calgary do entertain trading Monahan, now is the time to do it.

Modified NTC kicks in next season for the rest of his contract. 3 years, 6.3m hit left.

Sean Monahan - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps
Now is not the time to trade for Monaghan; before his Modified NTC kicks in. If Calgary is moving him before his NTC kicks in, that’s. Major red flag to me. Like when we moved Stepan for the same reason. Makes me think they know something we don’t and they are looking for a sucker.

Monahan is a perfect fit on paper for centering Panarin and Kakko. Good in both ends, doesn't need to have the puck on his stick all the time in order to be effective, and can create space for skilled wingers. Carries a $6.35m hit for 3 more years though, so there's some financial considerations to be weighed for sure. Especially with that 2022 summer looking to be a rough one from a contract perspective.
