I am open to considering moving DeAngelo--not actively shopping him, but I'd listen if someone asked--but we really need to be careful. Fox looked like a burgeoning star, but I remember Skjei looking like a future stud after his first year and Del Zotto also looking like he was going to be special. Now, neither of them played to Fox's level, but they were both very young, very good, and looked to have very promising futures. And then (for whatever reasons) both reverted to some level of mediocrity for the rest of their careers.

I would hate to move DeAngelo because we're counting on Fox to continue being amazing and Lunkdvist to be a big-time player, and then we end up with Fox regressing and Lundkvist being some marginal player.

I definitely hear you on this but our LD side has even less of certainty than RD.

Do people not consider that DeAngelo could also regress?

As folks have mentioned here, it’s not a coincidence that Tony had his best year the same time as Strome, Panarin and others

Just some food for thought lol

he could yet he’s getting better by the year and only 24.

i’d be more worried if he was up and down and just had his best year at age 28.

What are you driving at (sorry for the incoming pun)? Are you calling him a passenger?

Calgary. And the player that Calgary has shown great interest in, (which @Edge has already stated here) is Buchnevich. And, he also revealed that the Rangers have already inquired about Lindholm. So, if a deal was to be done, it's likely going to centered around those two players.

I think they need/will want Georgiev a weee bit more than Buchnevich after what happened last night

For sure. Again, I'm open to moving DeAngelo. Just focusing on him, on the right side. Yet moving him also causes some trepidation as there's never a guarantee that first year guys get better or even stay where they're at, or that "sure-fire" prospects can't miss. So, letting go of DeAngelo just worries me a bit. I'd be more open to moving him if it included a reinforcement of the LD.

Yeah, he totally could. It should be a consideration. He had an amazingly productive season. I don't think it's inconceivable that his shooting percent drops from 10%+ (there were only three other defenseman in the top twenty in scoring who shot over 8%, and only one higher than DeAngelo--Werenski who was out-shooting his career average by like 4% ) or some other statistical drop with his teammates occurs (Panarin becomes an 90 point guy instead of a 110+ point guy, etc.). Of course he could continue on and see those numbers improve, but it's not a sure thing. I just think we tend to fall into a trap where we think our young guys will always progress or maintain their current level when it's basically a guarantee that 1-2 (depending on how many you have in your lineup) have a regression.

It happens in every sport. There are always guys that regress, guys that get injured, and so on. I feel like we go in projecting everyone remaining healthy all year and playing at their past level or better, and that just isn't realistic.

he can but he was already on a very upward trajectory before this season.

I don't think he'll "get better" from what he's done to this point tbh but I think he can maintain it and to me that's more than enough.

Not at all

I don't think Tony is in the same category as Strome in that sense. Strome is absolutely a passenger.

We're talking about regression, I'm just throwing out there I don't believe it's unreasonable to say Tony may regress a bit next year, in the same way Panarin or Strome (for example) may regress a bit

I wouldn't be terribly opposed to a DeAngelo + Geo for Lindholm + Valimaki + tbh

The issue there would be moving Strome and/or Buch though

Deangelo, excellent offensively, below average defensively. If he wasn't playing sheltered minutes behind fox and trouba it would be a horror show. Unless he learns to play d he can't be paid 5 mill on this team long term because a 5 mill dman on this team needs to be in the top 4 and if his matchups get tougher he will get eaten alive like he did vs carolina. He needed to have that part of his game figured out before this contract came up. I still think they sign him to a short contract and move him before before the contract is over. If I could snag a young center or LD out of him id do it in a heartbeat, especially considering we have the best dman not playing in the nhl waiting for a spot on rd.
Now, please tell me again how he is a top 10 d in one area of hockey.
Uh, he is, and it’s a pretty damn important area too.

But there’s no evidence Calgary is interested in him. The interest in Buchnevich is known.

Both Alberta teams reportedly like Buchnevich. We can drive up a bidding war. So three scenarios:

Buch and Georgiev (and another piece) for Monahan
Buch and Georgiev for Lindholm+
Buch+ for Klefbom or Nurse

A. Mantha might be a target, I heard just now. Would cost a bit, but interesting... He is likely on the older side in Detroits rebuild process. Fits better into our timeline. Younger assets would go the other way

Really having trouble coming up with a deal that makes sense, especially since the Rangers will be in a cap crunch. The only younger asset that I think would interest Detroit (that we would actually trade) would be Chytil. Deangelo would be a cleaner trade for salary reasons but are we really just going to go all in on wingers?

I like that someone is mentioning the possibility of a sophomore slump and planning for a setback instead of everyone advancing.

I guess the one difference with Skjei is he was forced into a big role too soon. If ADA goes, at least Trouba is still here to take tough assignments. Trouba may struggle at times too (I do think he has a better year and the irony of my statement isn't lost) but the team has an option to shelter a young player. Hopefully they have the infrastructure in place to protect against another Skjei situation.

I don't think Fox pulls a Skjei for 2 reasons.

1. He already started to handle the tougher assignments this year and crushed them.
2. His hockey sense is 10000000x better

People mention the Sophomore slump like it's some kind of mystery illness that randomly infects second year players. Usually, it's due to a lack of proper training/preparation or a regression from a statistical anomaly (In Skjei's case, the unholy amount of secondary assists he had in year 1.)

Now if he completely f***s off during the break like Hayes did after his rookie season then yeah, struggle city is probably going to get a new occupant.

Getting Monahan or Lindholm for a base of Buch and Georgiev would be such a huge win for us. I really wouldnt expect it without another piece coming from us that we wouldnt necessarily be happy about.
