I like the idea of adding a guy like McQuaid. He's a tough guy who plays 3rd pairing minutes. He can come in and play 2/3 of the season and get moved at the deadline opening up a spot for a young player to finish the season int he NHL while building confidence in the AHL.

So....McQuaid is a RD. ADA, Pionk, Shattenkirk. Perhaps they believe one of these guys will be sitting?

In the overall scheme of things, I like the idea of adding McQuaid to start the season an then moving him at the deadline. He should return more than a 4th at the deadline as a veteran rental

You can never have enough defensemen really... and while they traded one for another, McQuaid can definitely take a more permanent role than Kampfer.

I don't think it's so much they believe one of them will be sitting as they believe there will be injuries... because there are usually injuries.

I don't think McQuaid is competing for a spot.

To me this makes it kind of seem more like there is one spot for Poink or ADA.

Looks to me like this puts Poink in the AHL unless injury takes place or it puts ADA on waivers.

I think it creates competition.

Shattenkirk is a given on the right side. In theory, Pionk should be able to claim a spot.

So that leaves ADA, McQuaid and possible Smith battling for a spot, with Smith possessing the ability to also play the left side, and McQuaid having the ability to skate as a forward.

I think they're looking at McQ as an insurance policy who could come out and win a spot, but also settle into a support role.

I don't see anything wrong having a presence like McQuaid in the locker room mixing in with the youngsters. It's not like we're going to miss Kampfer terribly.

Just my speculation but they don't seem to like ADA.

Why? He was given a good shot at the end of last season until he got hurt. I don't see anything else that would indicate that they dislike him other than he was sent down after the beginning of last season

They just traded for a vet RD.

so Shattenkirk, McQuaid, Pionk/ADA on RD. They should all be on the roster since ADA hits waivers otherwise

The positive with McQuaid is his ability to PK. That was one of the concerns with the right side of the defense should it consist of Shattenkirk, ADA and Pionk

Can’t that say something about Pionk instead though? (Pionk doesn’t need to clear waivers to be send down)

Or can’t it just say that “these kids might not be 100% ready for full time duty?

Yes could say the same about Pionk, and I think demoting him is their fall back option.

It's just my speculation, I think they traded for ADA, found out they did not really like him or his game very much, and now they are kind of in a spot where they do not know what to do with him as he would need to pass through waivers. I think they'd rather keep up Pionk but since he is waiver exempt he may be the one who is demoted.

I don’t really think the temperature of this board reflects how management feels about him, they didn’t just blindly acquire a player when trading away their 1C

It's just my speculation, I think they had different ideas when they made that deal as they do now.

I think they intended to try to develop ADA at the NHL level last year, they had no plans to sign Shattenkirk at that time but then Shattenkirk came to them with what they believed was a bargain contract which they could not pass up. They did not see Pionk as viable since he lacked pedigree. They think they need toughness/leadership/whatever hence this move (not that I total disagree with them) Now all that combined leaves them with buyer remorse on ADA.

I can't say if they like or don't like ADA. It's hard to tell with a new coach who hasn't seen him on the ice yet, and he's coming off a serious injury.

What I do feel comfortable saying is that the Rangers probably aren't "sold" on ADA coming into the season and don't consider him a given. Which I think is pretty understandable.

I also think the Rangers saw a roster that, even if McQ plays a 7th defenseman or occassional fourth line RW, is pretty one-dimensional at right defense.

Let's even say that ADA and Pionk both win roster spots and look good doing so. You're talking about right side of our starting defense not having a player bigger than about 6'0, 200 pounds, or having a particular focus on the defensive and physical aspects of the game.

Weird.

Hopefully, Brisebois makes the right moves for the Rangers to get another 1st in June.

Yzerman is in the last season of his contract. He must be looking at going back to Detroit.

I bet Ken Holland's seat in Detroit is getting hot. Would make a lot of sense.

Weird timing for sure with Tampa still all in on winning a Cup though.

Holland just signed an extension

The timing of this seems to point to something personal, perhaps health related

Re: DeAngelo

Don't know why so many are freaking out about his perceived spot on the team with the acquisition of Mcquaid. The Rangers can carry 8 defensemen and 13 forwards. Forward depth isn't really that great. I think this is the Opening Day roster unless a kid like Hajek or Ronning pushes another player out of a spot:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Zuccarello
Namestnikov-Hayes-Chytil
Spooner-Andersson-Buchnevich
Vesey-Nieves-Fast
Mcleod

Skjei-Mcquaid (@silverfish ;))
Staal-Shattenkirk
Smith-Pionk
Claesson
DeAngelo
