Re: DeAngelo

Don't know why so many are freaking out about his perceived spot on the team with the acquisition of Mcquaid. The Rangers can carry 8 defensemen and 13 forwards. Forward depth isn't really that great. I think this is the Opening Day roster unless a kid like Hajek or Ronning pushes another player out of a spot:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Zuccarello
Namestnikov-Hayes-Chytil
Spooner-Andersson-Buchnevich
Vesey-Nieves-Fast
Mcleod

Skjei-Mcquaid (@silverfish ;))
Staal-Shattenkirk
Smith-Pionk
Claesson
DeAngelo

It's going to be interesting to see how it shakes out. Zibanejad, Hayes, Spooner, Namestnikov, and Andersson have all spent time at center in addition to Chytil. I feel that Chytil has the best shot of all of those to be the most successful at wing. He's a monster in the corners and along the boards. He can always move back to center as he matures and other players get dealt or leave (cough, Hayes, cough).

Spooner and Namestnikov should be wingers on this team. Zibanejad, Hayes, and Andersson the centers. Andersson probably has the highest hockey IQ of any of the team's other forwards. He should be at center.

I don't think anything changes here.

Locks:

Skjei-Shatty
Staal-Pionk

Those were the locks before the week. McQuaid will be a lock for 3RHD because we aren't going to trade a 4th for a guy who won't play.

Smith, as long as he doesn't have a terrible training camp, was probably going to take 3LHD. Claesson/Gilmour/DeAngelo/O'Gara for the 7th spot is the "real" competition here.

It's not just his literal spot on the team. It's that he's not going to play now.

Pionk is not a lock. That's nuts

The only locks on defense are skjei, staal, and shattenkirk.

That's it.

And staal may be your 7th or 8th defenseman if the coach and gm speak is to he believed.

After the trade today, I think I'm expecting to see..

Skjei - Shattenkirk
Staal - Pionk
Claesson - McQuaid

I'm DeAngelo's biggest fan here..by a friggin mile.

But if he fails to beat out McQuaid then...well....he's probably not an nhler. With that said...if he does beat out McQuaid and still doesn't play..Then we should get bent outta shape. As of now too much is unknown.

Competition is never a bad thing...neither is having contingency plans put into place. Handing spots to kids with no fallbacks is a baaaaaaaddd thing.

Having a player who sucks and isn't real competition, but will present real competition because he's tough and a vet is a very bad thing.

I completely understand what you're saying about it not yet being known, but I've been watching this team and this league too long to expect anything else.

I'd bet the farm McQuaid already has an opening day spot.

Are we actually gonna let Tokarski wear 35?

Of course not. It's a coding error on the NHL website that shows him as wearing 35. Since they have not assigned a new number yet, the coding shows a previous number used by Tokarski, which would be 30 but that's already in use, so it skips to 35 as it's non-existent on the team and the coding doesn't exclude retired numbers for this feature.

They haven't been dishonest with us yet so I see no reason not to believe them now.

Thank you for being the voice of reason. Over the last 3 years I have noticed a serious uptick regarding people being bent out of shape about things that have not and may never happen. Wasting time, effort and energy to be mad about something that hasn't happened yet is pure insanity.

Staal is a lock? They will likely force him to waive his NTC and swallow up 50% of his contract to move his ass out of here.

But that also speaks to the challenge of falling behind prior to a move like this.

The reality is that it's probably not McQ that is costing ADA a roster spot, it's the fact that Pionk went out and took that spot last year. As a result, ADA was already starting behind the eight ball.

ADA has been playing pro hockey for two years and has yet to win a spot on two different NHL clubs. And neither roster was exactly stacked. In that time he also got beat out by a prospect who is the same age, relatively the same size, and with some of the same question marks.

There's no getting around that ADA has an uphill battle.

But I think there's a significant amount of context missing from this discussion and how we've arrived at this point.

I have to tell you, there are a number of people who absolutely FEAST on the negative. If you do an audit of all of their posts, literally 80 percent of them would be negative.

It's not just the negativity, it's that anger and bitterness and extreme knee-jerk reactions to fairly minor events.

Unfortunately, it's not just on here. I see it with many of my hobbies.

And it's hard to find a balance because people tend to push themselves into one extreme or the other.

You have some people who want to look on the bright side of things and ignore that the house is burning down around them, and then you have people who are running around, screaming "fire" the minute we turn on the stove to cook dinner.

There has to be a middle ground.
