He’s a consistent, perennial 40-50 point player, making 6.65 for three more seasons.

The problem is the defense though.
He's been able to maintain his point totals from sheltered minutes.

This year those totals are going to be a lot less if he has to try and defend against the leagues top lines.

He's going to get all his points on the PP and suck 5v5.

I get part of your statement but hes averaged over 21 minutes per game in his nhl career. You cant keep a player sheltered for that many minutes each game.

Came in for a peek for my daily doom and gloom and RB never fails to deliver.
I'd agree with the tbh. We're not gonna contend for a cup, even in the most optimistic of scenarios, for at least another 3 seasons beyond this. Probably closer to 5 tho. And again, that's being very optimistic.

While I am resigned to the very strong possibility that we do not contend for 2-3 years, I do believe that this time frame could be shortened by a year with the right trades this trade deadline and the proper drafting g and signings this summer.

If we could net another two first round picks from the likes of Zuccarello and Hayes, added to our own (likely top 5) and sign a Panarin this off season that would further boost the rebuilding effort and replace a large portion of offence traded.

The hope then is that the kids drafted develope into what we expect but that will be no different then than it is today.

There's potential that we could have no less than 8 and possibly as much as 10 1st round draft picks in three drafts covering 24 months. Not to mention other picks and college FA's that we can snatch up.

Add those to what we have and who we can sign, and proper coaching in my humble opinion could allow us to advance the rebuild process by a year

Absolutely.

1 surefire top 3-5 pick, if we can scoop up Panarin & some trades ...

That would certainly change the landscape of this rebuild.

Also, this road we seem to be traveling down; this ‘let’s have a billion LD & 1b/2a centers’ seems to seriously point to us looking to eventually move someone (or even some people) for another position of need/player(s) we like.

Going to be a wild ride.

There’s absolutely zero chance Gorton has 5 more years of not making the playoffs in him

If you’ve been rebuilding for what amounts to 7 years, and you can’t make the playoffs/contending, you’ve failed

He’ll be gone if that’s the case and the process probably restarted

Well, if there's any time to find out if he can do better 5v5 over a full season, this is the one to do it. Maybe he and Skjei form a functional working partnership.

I thought Brooks was better informed, obviously not. It's interesting how they keep the media out of it this year.

Some people need to take a step back. Rebuilds are fluid. You cant say the rebuild will be X amount of years. There are variables that go into these types of things.

Do any of the prospects step up and exceed expectations?
Does a player like Buch take the next step in his career out of the shadow of AVs dog house?
Do the Rangers get a top pick in next years draft and get a player like Hughes?

A lot of items like the above and others not mentioned could play into whether it makes sense to sign a player like Panarin next summer.

A lot can change in less than a years time.

Haven't had much time to post because I've been swamped with work and stuff out of work so that takes precedence of course.

I'm really bummed about the Seguin thing because he was my guy to go after but credit to Jim Nill for getting it done AND at an affordable price. Dallas lucked out with the tax thing, he would've been at least $12-$13 on the open market. And that Super Mario twitter announcement was awesome.

I'm fine with Panarin but please, don't expect him to be a franchise savior. It's harder for a winger to do that.

I don't think anyone is saying we won't make the playoffs for 5 years, but making the playoffs and contending for the cup aren't the same thing. The devils made the playoffs last year, but did anyone think they had a serious chance of winning it all?

We've got 4 older players with 3 years remaining on their contracts: Hank, Shatty, Staal and Smith. Staal and Smith almost certainly won't be part of a cup contending team. Hank and Shatty could be, but the odds of that being within the next 3 years are low. Will either be re-signed? I doubt it. Hank will be 39 and Shatty will be 32.

We also need time for our prospects to mature. In 3 years, Kravtsov will likely be in his 2nd season. Lundkvist might be a rookie and Miller might still be in college. It's going to be extremely difficult for this team to seriously compete for a cup within the next 3 years, regardless of what players we sign or trade for. I'm thinking the next 3 years will be about building the team, with a playoff appearance or two in there, and then in year 4 we will start to really compete.

I’d like for Hank to be able to stick around for another run even if he’s a part time starter platooning with Shestyorkin or another goalie. I feel like he deserves more than one Cup run with the team.

I don’t want to betray a proper rebuild but I am willing to be very aggressive by bringing in free agents like Panarin.

Wingers may not be centerpieces but they can be final touches on young rosters.

It's all about getting top 5 picks and drafting stars. Finishing 9th overall isn't enough for this team to be contenders. Hopefully this year we can draft a future #1 center and draft a #1 defenceman next year. Then, we can start thinking about being contenders.
