To me contend is being a top regular season team or a team that goes deep into the playoffs regularly. If you're great in the regular season and lose in the first round, I'd say there are tweaks that can usually be made to remedy that.

Anyone could be named captain, but if this team acquires an elite young talent, they will eventually be the captain. If we were going to name Fast, Kreider, any of those players as captain, I think they would've been named captain this season. They've all spent enough time in the NHL. The GM and coach don't feel like the captain is on the team.

None of the players not on the team, but in the organization would have much of a leg up on a real elite talent we drafted from 2019 or 2020 when it comes to the NHL.

Best player =/= best captain

Drury was the best captain we've had in the last 25 years after Messier. Better captain than Leetch, Jagr, Callahan or McDonagh.

Fast is just about the only player on this team who fits all 3 of the criteria that Quinn is looking for.

That felt weird to type out.

I mentioned Quickie as Captain a month ago.

Displays everything you want in a captain on and off the ice but I do not know how much of a coach he is or can be which is what i believe is needed for an effective leader today.

I think where you and I disagree is that I dont feel the need to pin a C on our most talented player.

If hes a leader, great. But just because hes the best player does not by default means hes a leader.

I much preferred Callahan as Captain over Dreary

Regardless, Cally was never the teams best player. I'd say the two of them were clearly better captains than the others.

I feel the role is severely overrated especially since Hank is the real leader of this entire franchise.

This whole point is misguided because it’s working under the assumption that our best player will always be captain.

Sure, it usually works out that way, but not always. And who your captain is doesn’t determine whether you’re a contender or not.

Revise your point to be “if the Rangers don’t acquire a young elite talent they won’t be contenders” then sure.

Lundqvist has been this team's real Captain for about a decade now.

I think he's the symbolic leader, but no way is he the verbal one.

Hank doesn't, by most available evidence, give locker room speeches or organize the team. He's been described by several players as very introverted and self-reflective.

Well I hope coach Quinn don`t go all toughness and physic as his main cards and little else to show for in MSG. :)

"Contending" is 100% dependent on the growth of our prospects. The better prospects we get the faster that rebuild is gonna be. Go get Hughes and you chop a year to two years off your rebuild. If this rebuild is still going on 5 years from now then something went terribly wrong along the way.

Get yourself Hughes and the rebuild is pretty much over.

It doesn't even have to be him. Get a top offensive threat out of this next draft into the fold and make a few signings/trades in the offseason and we're a playoff team.

The top 5 in 19 is a gold mine. Let's be very very bad this season.

This season is gonna be rough. In 30 plus years I've never ever gone into a season without wanting to win every single game. I totally understand tho wanting to get into the top 5 in this draft and possibly maybe garnering another first rounder via trade. Then Start aiming to really compete/go deep into playoffs in 2-3 years.

Love Kravtsov but have to think that if we drafted Dobson the potential number one RHD would be taken care of since the 2019 draft seems very talented in the forward category. Still happy with Kravtsov and his potential to be a bonafide first line winger.

I’d rather have a leader who does instead of a leader who says.

In all honesty though, I don’t give a rats ass who our next Captain is.

I’m more concerned with who our long term #1 dman and #1 Center is. That to me is more of a concern.

Captains are overrated. You can have a mediocre captain with great leadership in that lockeroom.

So when do the Rangers trade Kreider? Brooks brought it up. He will be 29 at the start of his next contract which will take him to his mid 30's.

Shattenkirk just got here. He still has three years left on his contract.

Maybe the Rangers don't view those players as leaders. Captain material.

The Rangers made Callahan the captain in 2011 when he signed just a 3 year contract and was traded at the 2014 deadline. They weren't concerned about a revolving door at captain.

The next captain should be the face of the next Rangers team which competes for a Cup.

Don't name a captain for a while.

The Kreider trade possibility is a lot bigger than people realize. A few months ago there were some who didn’t want to hear it, but it’s a very real possibility — especially if Kreider is hovering around a 20 goal, 40 point pace in February.

Playoffs two years ago he was our best defenseman.

If Smith plays closer to his abilities, he’s a guy who can play both the left and right side, step into a top four role from time to time, and play his 18 mins a night.

If he can get on track, He’ll have some ups and downs. but he does also potentially bring something the Rangers will need — a little bit of snarl and some type-A personality traits.

Forget the whole captain thing, I’m still shaking my head that I didn’t realize you were Australian.

#MindBlown

It's the swear filter. The bloody thing really limits the ability to the let the f***ing Aussie-ness shine through in a post....
