Yes.

Or you can trade everyone who's over 27, or has trade protection, or a contract that ends when they're 28-32. : SARCASM :

Either or, really.

man, do I really need to put a sarcasm emoji on that latter part?

btw I was building off your previous post not criticizing

This team is probably better than some give it credit for though a lot will hinge on the goaltending and how well the coaching staff utilizes the revamped defense

But seriously I can't get over how we just went from

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Holden
Skjei-Klein

or something along those lines to

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Staal-DeAngelo

Other than Staal sticking out like a sore thumb it's suddenly a very modern NHL puck moving defense as opposed to the old school "defensive defensemen who really aren't htat good" style it was

I think the attraction (other than his speed/skills) is that he is a 52-63 point guy at age 21 but there is no guarantee that goes up.

If MacKinnon was a Ranger, you better believe people would be pegging that point total to go up.

(see: Vesey, Jimmy or Zibanejad, Mika)

We tend overrate our own players, and underrate those around the league.

LOL we....do I do that? :D

I think we tend to overrate some and underrate others. Sometimes we bash guys a lot then a year later we say we would like them back. :)

If you watch him play a handful of games, he absolutely has the potential to go way up. He's easily 80 points a year if you put him on a functional well coached team with 3 balanced lines of offense.

I mean to be fair, I could see his numbers going up anywhere else away from Colorado. We turned Holden into a 34 point dman

That is the hope although I would not say he is a 80 point guy easily on a well coached team. That kind of thing is possible but it really has to be proven. On a better team he might see less ice time and have more defensive responsibilities. Do not get me wrong. I would very much like to have him as a Ranger. I'm just not willing to say for sure he would be a 80 point scorer here.

I remember after Rick Nash's first strike shortened season here there was a thread where so many people said Nash would score 50 (plus) that season. I said that is possible but more likely he would be in the 32-40 range. I got bashed a lot for saying so in that thread but that was his normal range.

Moves can also be made during the season (shocking I know!) so going into a season with some holes in the lineup doesn't mean the team should just fold immediately and sell off all its assets

How many trades are made during the season?

Not that many.

The majority of the trades are made close to the trading deadline.

Yeah but you don't take guys like Pesce in the 3rd round though.

I brought up Pesce in his draft year and someone here said he is a safe pick and the Rangers shouldn't take him.

Safe pick.

Some of you guys live in an alternate universe. Look at what Gorton has done.

He traded Brassard for Zibanejad. The Rangers got younger.

He traded Stepan and Raanta for Andersson and ADA. The Rangers traded Stepan before his NTC kicked in.

He held the line on Shattenkirk. Limited NTC protection in years 2-4

Look at the moves.

Yeah. I don't see why we can't be successful with this group. Our defense is leaps and bounds better and I think the net gains in our defense outweigh the net loss in our C depth.

Win the Cup with this group?

They can have a successful season with having their young players get better. Build on that in future years.

The narrative is that if you can not guarantee a cup (which no team can) then don't try to win this season or anytime soon. Instead pretend to be a NHL GM and trade everyone above age 27 for young guys and draft picks. The this team can not win notion was said repeatedly in Sept-Oct-Nov 2013 and we ended up in the cup finals.

Did the Rangers win the Cup in 2014?

They ended up re-signing Girardi and Staal to keep that group together. Look at that mess right now.

We == HFNYR as a collective. And fans everywhere always.

Holden's 34 points were dumb luck via absurd sh%

I can't figure out MacKinnon. Watch him and from a skills perspective it's evident he is the best player on the ice. type of player than can post a 50 goal season. But, he just can't break through the barrier to elite player. 76 goals in 300 NHL games. Solid numbers but they just don't scream superstar like the reputation he carries. So maybe bad team factors here. But he's had some really good linemates. At some point there has to be no excuses for production of lack thereof.

To me he seems very Kreider-like. Except, Kreider didn't come in with the hype that MacKinnon did. Really would love to see these two on a line together one day. Likely will never happen on NYR, but I think they would compliment each other well.

This isn't something new guys. This team has depth on the wings. They all of a sudden have nice depth on the blue line. The center spot is below average. RB isn't saying anything different than many others have already said. This Ranger team is most likely a top-6 center and some development from their young players away from being in that next tier.
