I don't want to say you guys are overvaluing Skjei but it sure looks like you are.

Nathan M is a top 20 center in the league. Is Skjei a top 20 defenseman?

I suspect Colorado would laugh at that offer. Sakic is going to be asking for McDonagh in a Duchene deal. They might take Skjei, but not for MacKinnon.

I think it'd certainly be a huge steal value-wise to move him for MacKinnon, but I'd look to move a number of other painful assets before Brady.

We need to keep the guys who end up being very fortuitous draft picks, not move them over and over and over. We move picks, then when we strike gold like Saarela, or at the time Duclair, we move them too. One move down the line for our returns and we lost those guys for nothing. We need to hoard the gems we end up getting in the draft.

And yes, Sakic wants McDonagh for Duchene like JG wants Crosby for a bag of pucks. Sakic's delusional and in way, way over his head.

The Rangers are not winning with this group. A successful season is the young players taking the next step. Zibanejad. Buchnevich. Vesey. Skjei. Miller. Hayes. At least one of the young D becoming an NHL player. ADA. Pionk. Bereglazov. Move Miller back to center? Management wants Miller at center. Give Andersson the 9 game look see and send him back to Sweden or maybe the AHL. Frolonda most likely. The best answers at center are internal options. Miller. Andersson. Chytil. Short and long term. It's not a coincidence the Rangers used both #1 picks on centers.

lol in what world is MacKinnon top 20 at anything

yeah like dude is talented and all but not really a standout player yet. It's entirely possible that Zibanejad could outscore him next season. The risk is that he's "just" a 50-60 point center with unrealized potential

We should just offer sheet Sakic. :sarcasm:

Sakic was incredible.

Totally OTS, but its a quick story worth telling.

So back in 2001 the Avs played the Devils for the Cup. I was 22 and in-between semesters working at the Ice House in Hackensack. The Avs had a few closed practices there during the final, but since I was working there I got to hang out and watch.

They were working on some PP drills. Sakic was set up and he launched one of his patented wristers that just missed the crossbar. It hit the glass behind the net and it exploded. It was the loudest sound that I ever heard out of a hockey rink.

But once I got over to clean it up, I understood why. He actually shattered two panes of glass with one shot. If you've ever been to Ice House they have 4 rinks lined up with a huge lobby. There is a behind-the-net view of each rink and they are adjacent to each other. The lobby glass is about 6-7 feet away from rink's glass and he had enough velocity on his shot to go through both panes. We found the puck by a wall next to the main entrance that is 20 or so feet from the glass.

With a wrist shot.

Zibabajed. Kreider. Zuccarello. Hayes. Buchnevich. Vesey. Nash. Miller. Grabner. Nieves. Fast. Desharnies. Pumepel. Andersson. McDonagh. Shattenkirk. Skjei. Smith. DeAngelo. Staal. Berezgalov. Pionk. Holden. Lundqvist. Pavelec. Vignualt.

Sakic could be the worst GM in the league. He is the one guy where I think if you actually pulled a random poster from HF, they could probably do a better job. I know a lot of posters think it is really easy to be a GM that that many fans could do a better job. I don't sans Sakic (and probably Bergevin). Absolutely loved him as a player but the guy is just out to lunch as a GM.

I realize Skjei would have to have a + attached to him but I think the only player on that team he is worth trading for is MacKinnon.

As I have said before, I get it that Skjei for Duchene is a fair deal in a vacuum, but it isn't one we should make.

I don't know why I'm even bothering, but why not?

Because he said so. Cheers to a season have passive fans who shouldnt even bother getting their hopes up that this team can compete.

Back to getting excited for this season. This defense, even with Staal, has a lot of promise with Mac-Shatty/Skjei-Smith making up the top 4. It is universes better than it was over the last few years, even during the year they went to the cup. It fits the way the game is being played now. Puck movement and distribution from the defense out with great vision and skating ability. We have that. Cannot wait to see it come together in camp. Shatty will be a leader in that room. He has been through it before with the Blues over countless playoff battles.

Like I know MacKinnon is notably younger but ya'll realize that Duchene has been a better player than MacKinnon so far right

Yeah. I don't see why we can't be successful with this group. Our defense is leaps and bounds better and I think the net gains in our defense outweigh the net loss in our C depth.

After 15 years of hoarding picks and trading 28+ players RB will still be whining that we "aren't winning with this group".

I don't know why I'm even bothering, but why not?

Yawn, another season decided before it starts...why even play??

Clearly they are going to go 0-82.

The narrative is that if you can not guarantee a cup (which no team can) then don't try to win this season or anytime soon. Instead pretend to be a NHL GM and trade everyone above age 27 for young guys and draft picks. The this team can not win notion was said repeatedly in Sept-Oct-Nov 2013 and we ended up in the cup finals.

Whoa! :amazed:

Yeah. I don't see why we can't be successful with this group. Our defense is leaps and bounds better and I think the net gains in our defense outweigh the net loss in our C depth.

This is conditional on Zibanejad stepping up, Hayes stepping up, and Miller moving to C, or Andersson surprising and breaking the roster.

No guarantees that Girardi(-) and Shattenkirk(+) cancels out Stepan (-).

It's not unfair to believe that, at best, this team made net-lateral movements in the off-season. Address one weakness and potentially create another. That being said, net-lateral still makes this team a contender, and I don't think it's crazy to believe that this team can win.

Get in on a roll and you can win the Stanley Cup.

I think our biggest weakness is goaltending right now as much as I hate to say that. I'm losing a lot of faith in hank at this point in his career.

Canes backend is just stupid good with Faulk, Slaavin, and now Pesce locked up long-term on great contracts

Moves can also be made during the season (shocking I know!) so going into a season with some holes in the lineup doesn't mean the team should just fold immediately and sell off all its assets

Yes.

Or you can trade everyone who's over 27, or has trade protection, or a contract that ends when they're 28-32. : SARCASM :

Either or, really.

man, do I really need to put a sarcasm emoji on that latter part?
