How does he earn minutes then if leading the team in preseason scoring isn't good enough?
He earns them by being talented enough to get them.

Unfortunately for him, he’s not talented enough to get them. Jimmy Vesey can’t earn top 6 minutes.

There’s a reason nobody else in the league is giving them to him.

So then it's not a meritocracy in the least and there's no such thing as competition. It's just play the guys you feel should get them because they're young and may have potential.

It's also the preseason. Seems like a pretty clear and obvious time to experiment with the lines in ways like this and see if it happens to work. The best lines are often not "Play the three best forwards on the team together."

No. It’s play the better players. It’s the perfect meritocracy.

Jimmy Vesey is no better than the 9th or 10th best forward on our team.

I don't think most teams in the league would consider someone with 58 points in 157 games and 3 years one of the "better players" and gift him a spot regardless of where he was drafted.

And the point isn't to have the best first line. It's to have the best team. Balancing the lines by having a cheaper fill in on the top line can serve that purpose.

How many 1st overall picks in their D+3 season are playing 3rd line minutes?

Literally every other team would be handling this differently. Because they all have.

Welcome to hell.

Honestly, if they just chop off the last 4 I would be ok with it:

Kreider - Zib - Vesey
Panarin - Trocheck - Kravtsov
Laf - Chytil - Kakko
Blais - Goodrow - Rydahl

Again, thats a real competitive 4th line with no dead wood. Also while not sexy, Im ok with Vesey on the top line. He's been one of the best in camp and hes got the skills to finish a play. Better than Hunt or Blais right now. Maybe even Goodrow.

But I dont expect it to stay like this. Looks like tinkering, but we are getting close so we may see a game or two like this.

It would be interesting to get some further insight as to how Gallant is deploying the groups of 4.

Are Gauthier/Rydahl subbing for one another on the wing with Blais-Goodrow a pair? Or is it one big mess of guys cycling out one by one in drills/scrimmages?

Either way, I like that its Rydahl and not Carpenter with Goodrow and Blais. Considering the "love" Gallant gave Gauthier with his 40 missed opportunities and "good" camp, id say the top 4 have the inside track on 4th line duties.

I think its safe to say Vesey has made the team

They'll never do this, but it might be the strongest lineup, depending on how Kravstov goes.

Lafreniere Mika Kakko
Panarin Trocheck Chytil/Kravy
Kreider Goodrow Chytil/Kravy
Vesey Rydahl Blais

How many 1st overall picks in the past 10-15 years played in a conference final in their 2nd season? And his first season was a shortened mess due to covid. His development path is different than almost all 1OA picks.

I’m comparing it to all those teams that won Stanley Cups after receiving high draft picks.
All what teams that won stanley cups in the D+2 season? Crosby? He's not Crosby.

It comes down to TOI for me. If the idea is to spread the wealth and prioritize ice time for the lines that are running hot, I'm fine with it. But if Kreider and Zibanejad are getting 20 minutes a game while being dragged down by Blais/Goodrow/Vesey, while the Kid Line is getting 14 minutes with excellent possession stats, that can't happen.

They do some of the dragging 5v5. Easy to blame everyone who gets put with them. But they make the money so maybe they can do some of the heavy lifting?

If line 3 is getting only 10-14 minutes and dominating possession, I think GG will have less defenders this year. He's gotta look at analytics and the eye test. It's not hard.
