Comparing Gauthier to Motte is not a good example at all. Gauthier was a first round pick with a high ceiling while Motte was a 4th round pick. The expectations between their careers isn’t even close. Motte is the prototypical 4th liner who teams trade for at the deadline. Speed, great forechecker, feisty, been in the league for a while. Gauthier is a former first round pick who has/had a high ceiling because of his size and skating ability and he showed like he was going to be able to score goals while playing in the AHL. People don’t have a favorable opinion of Gauthier because he’s busting/about to bust and his IQ is awful. People have a favorable view of Motte because he has a great work ethic. Motte, at 5’10 or whatever he is, plays a bigger game than Gauthier who’s 6’4. And that about sums it up.So is Gauthier.
Which is actually a perfect example. If Gauthier did absolutely nothing instead of f***ing up three high-danger chances a game, people would like him.
