Can he? I don't agree with this. Smith was used as a winger but I don't feel he was actually adding anything in that position.

Shattenkirk's buy out looks very ugly. Smith's buy out makes much more sense

Smith was very solid in that role. Not sure what more you’d want from a 4th line left wing. Did everything you could ask for there and Quinn praises him many times for it. In addition to being used on the PK and giving the team insurance if a dman got hurt during the game.

That would still limit what you can do next offseason though. Holding 6+ million of dead space for one guy not to play is a lot.

Regardless, the amount of hate the guy gets is unreal. He is 3000000000x the player that Staal is and I don't even think KS is THAT good.

It is a lot but next year we aren’t bringing in any big ticket guys. We’d only be adding a fill in depth guy or two tops. If ever there was a year to eat it it would be next year.

Many players will be looking for jobs in Europe.

There were so many Brassard questions for Carpiniello yesterday during The Athletic chat. He was like are you people kidding me. His decline started in his last season with the Rangers and the guy will have a hard time getting a job in the NHL. He was bad in Ottawa. Bad in Pittsburgh. Florida got rid of him as soon as they got him. Brass didn't do much in Colorado.

Gorton made a great deal and some many people here were against that trade. Zibanejad might be named Rangers captain and Brass might be out of the NHL in just three years.

I saw Spooner going Euro as soon as Vancouver bought him out. I think his worth is zilch among NHL clubs now.

We don't need to do anything next season. We have no key guys up for new contracts and the UFA market is awful. Now, I still wouldn't buyout Shattenkirk and take on a 6+M dead hit which could cause issues with bonuses again and potential trades but next years cap shouldn't be too big of a deal. I think there are much better ways to open up space that have far less long term consequences.

Namestnikov at the deadline, perhaps with retention, has real value. He is a useful, albeit overpaid player.

question though is how much value? a late 2nd? a 3rd? sure he's worth less now without retention but how much less?

It's going to be like a 3rd or 4th at the deadline. Look at the history of trades.

thats what I'm thinking so then how much less would it be now? a 5th? obviously a 3rd is better than a 5th but is the difference really enough to worry about?

even without the need to clear cap space, i'm really not sure where both strome and namestnikov fit into the lineup unless others are moved...so moving 1 of the 2 seems to be the most obvious move from both standpoint

He was just there. He makes over 4m. Let me ask you this question: If this was a 4th line winger making 4.3m for 2 more years playing "solid in that role" would you keep him or buy him out?

Around here it seemed pretty positive. But I bet in Rangers fandom as a whole, which you see more on Twitter, Facebook, etc... people didn't like the deal. Brassard was a fan favorite and the general fan population doesn't fully understand those kinds of moves. Especially not 1 season removed from a President's Trophy and ECF appearance.
Agreed. I recall most folks here being very happy (like 85% or so) including myself since I had like Zbad for a while but never thought OTT would deal him.

I think most knew after that playoff the team wasn't going to cut it. Personally, I didn't want to trade Brassard because he had great chemistry at times with Zucc, but there was no doubt in my mind he and most players vets on the team had peaked. The question was really if Zibby was going to take the next step and he has. It will go down as one of the best trades we made in our recent history.

Dude obviously not ideal having him on the team and costing 4 mil. That should be painfully obvious. But he is at least useful to us and can be waived to save some money if need be

Shattenkirk as your 7th dman making 7 mil is not a better option. He can’t play the wing he can’t play the left side he can’t penalty kill.

This is obviously an either or choice. Clearly no one wants either one here.

But to your question actually yes you can hide a bad 4 mil winger easier than bad 7 mil dman when you only have starting spots to give out.

I'd take overpaid but decent over overpaid flaming garbage like Marc Staal.

Yes but we were discussing Shattenkirk. His buy out is brutal so if you're going to buy our someone, it should be Smith
Oh, sorry I didn't see that. I'd rather buy out neither but I still maintain if we are buying out based on contributions it should be Staal.

I don't want to buy anyone out. Would rather just be done with those contracts after next season without penalty. But, if you're buying someone out it should be Smith and Staal.

Shatty's buyout sucks. And, if Shatty has a good start to the year I can see him being moved for something of value.

Shatty's buyout doesn't suck it's perfect for this season but he's still very serviceable it would be a waste vs buying out a guy like staal or smith

a buyout absolutely should be the last option but its still an option.

For everyone talking about Strome's shooting percentage didn't Shattenkirk have a career low or something horrible? His numbers should climb back up, plus hopefully play healthy, and he'll have plenty of value at the deadline.

The Avalanche only have (2) RD's on their roster right now. Erik Johnson and Cale Makar. Would anyone consider a Zadorov for Shattenkirk deal?

How about:

Kreider + Shattenkirk for Zadorov + Kaut + COL 1st '20

The Rangers buy-out Smith

Skjei-Trouba
Staal-ADA
Zadorov-Rykov/Fox/Hajek

The Avs have:

Barberio
Girard
Connauton
Cole
Rosen
Graves
Byram

All left on LD

I mean, I don't think they would.
