I disagree with the assessment of Smith having a “solid role” as a 4th line winger, seven out of seven days a week, twice on Sunday. Because he’s big and can hit players and has two more years on his contract, that we should now paint Smith as a 4th line guy. He should be the 7th defenseman if we don’t buy him out. He is no use as a forward.

The Avalanche only have (2) RD's on their roster right now. Erik Johnson and Cale Makar. Would anyone consider a Zadorov for Shattenkirk deal?

How about:

Kreider + Shattenkirk for Zadorov + Kaut + COL 1st '20

The Rangers buy-out Smith

Skjei-Trouba
Staal-ADA
Zadorov-Rykov/Fox/Hajek

The Avs have:

Barberio
Girard
Connauton
Cole
Rosen
Graves
Byram

All left on LD

Gorton couldn't trade Shatty at half price. What makes you think any team is going to give up something of value for him at full price? They just re-signed Zadorov to a 1 year deal and the last thing we need is another LD.

He needs to rot out the rest of that gross contract in Hartford and save the real team money.

This post makes sense if assists no longer matter, I guess.
Cool story. No one balances Strome's assists when they endless harp on his shooting percentage. He is reduced to a sure-to-plummet goal total. And the Panarin comment was in reference to a conversation. I didn't just pull those statements out of the ether.

Why are we trading for Zadorov to block Hajek/Rykov/Lindgren? We already have Staal here doing that. If we buyout Staal, Zadorov makes a little more sense. But, yeah, that doesn’t aeem fair for the Avs anyway

Perhaps the Rangers retain on Kreider or Shattenkirk.

The Avs don't need any LD's either, they need a RD.

Zadorov was signed a 1-year deal, let's not act like they just handed the guy a 5-6 year long-term extension. That 1 yer deal, to me, shows they are no sure whether he will be part of their long term plans.

For the Rangers, yes, they don't need another LD right now but 1 year of Zadorov isn't a bad asset necessarily. See how he does this year and if they want to move someone, perhaps it's Staal next year at half retained or he is bought out. Then perhaps another short-term deal for Zadorov makes sense as a 3rd pair guy.

Seattle has hired Ron Francis as their GM. The expansion draft is 23 months away. A lot can change from today until June 2021 but the Rangers are in very good shape.

7-3-1 or 8 skaters and one goaltender.

The Rangers go with 7-3-1 again. 1st and 2nd year pros are exempt. NMC's must be protected.

The Rangers might have an issue with their 3 D. Assuming Trouba signs a long-term extension with the Rangers, he will get one spot. Skjei will have 3 years remaining on his contract at the time of the expansion draft. Deangelo will be eligible.

Staal and Shattenkirk have expiring NMC's clauses by that time. The Rangers don't have to protect them if they are still here.

Hajek and Lindgren will be eligible for the draft. Fox will be exempt as a 2nd year pro. The other prospect D like Reunanen, Rykov and Keane will also be exempt. Day will also be eligible.

Miller and Lundqvist probably both turn pro next season/20-21. They spend at least 1/2 the season in the AHL. Exempt.

So many variables to consider in the next two seasons.

If Hajek comes along and develops into a 2nd pair D and Miller is developing into a top pair D, do the Rangers trade Skjei? What if Reunanen continues his development after his breakout season in Finland last season. Or Rykov becomes a solid D.

If the Rangers have Trouba and Fox on the right as their 1-2 with Deangelo has their #3 but they have Lundkvist in the AHL ready for the NHL, that makes Tony available in a trade. Even if Fox spends 1/2 of this season in the AHL, he should be ready for big show

Trouba gets one spot.

Skjei/Hajek/Deangelo for the last two spots.

Zibanejad and Panarin have NMC's. The Rangers trio of Andersson, Chytil and Howden are eligible. Assuming the Rangers sign Buchnevich to a 2 year bridge deal and they keep him for the entire term of the contract, he will be one year away from group III. The Rangers protect him and that makes it 6 forwards. The Rangers trade Kreider. They have one spot open. Maybe it's Lemieux. Kakko and Kravtsov will be exempt.

Lundqvist has an expiring NMC. The Rangers protect Georgiev. Shesterkin is exempt. Simple. It will fascinating to see how the goaltending situation shakes out if Lundqvist's game continues to decline. Get your popcorn ready for that one.

The Rangers have to expose two signed forwards signed for 21-22, one signed D for 21-22 and one goaltender who is signed for 21-22 or has been given a QO.

70 NHL games played in 19-20 & 20-21 or 40 NHL games played in 20-21 are requirements for the skaters exposed. No games played requirement for the goalies.

The Rangers signed Grabner to a 2 year contract and traded for Holden with two years left on his contract in 2016 to expose in the 2017 draft. They exposed Raanta too. Vegas took Lindberg. They were better off taking Grabner or Raanta.

The Rangers could re-sign Fast to a two year extension. 20-21 & 21-22. Expose Fast in the draft. Find one more forward and one D. They can find the goalie too. Some AHL journeyman.

As opposed to him taking up a spot on our roster? It's seemingly the best option, aside from moving him entirely, no?

we need to clear cap space...burying him in hartford saves, at most, $375k if he's replaced by a guy making the league minimum. I hate buyouts but we'd be better off buying him out then sending him down.

Perhaps the Rangers retain on Kreider or Shattenkirk.

that might make the avs more interested but if you are retaining $3 mil on shattenkirk and also bringing back a $3 mil contract then you are saving nothing by trading shattenkirk and essentially just using him to lessen the value of kreider in a trade.

In looking at the actual numbers, the Rangers could make that deal with Colorado work financially pretty easily.

Signings:
Buch - 2 years @ $3.5m
Lemieux - 1 year @ $900k
ADA - 2 years @ $1.2m
Trouba - 7 years @ $7.5m

Buyout Smith

Trade:
Kreider @ $3m cap hit (retain $1.625m)
Shattenkirk @ $5m cap hit (retain $1.5m)

for

Zadorov ($3.2m ap hit (RFA at years end)
Kaut (minors)
COL 1st '20 (top-10 protected)

That puts the Rangers at $78,152,299 going into the year with the following line-up:

Panarin-Zibanejad-Kakko
Buch-Strome-Kravtsov
Chytil-Andersson-Namestnikov
Lemieux-Howden-Fast
McKegg-Nieves

Skjei-Trouba
Staal-ADA
Zadorov-Rykov

Hank
Georgiev

Actually now that I look at it, Gorton, in this exact scenario, could keep Smith on the roster and send McKegg or Nieves down to the AHL and make that fit @ $80,781,466. It's tight, but possible.

Bonuses are not accounted for and may roll over to next year depending on how much space is left

Do you really see his play last year on the 4th line as a detriment? Who do you want in that role?

I actually believe that he did a good job as a 4th line forward. Without getting into mock battles about "tuffness", yes he provided it and yes, it will be needed again. From him or someone else.

And because I believe this contract to be undradeable, I am fine with him starting the year as a 12th forward/7th defenseman. There are no other kids I need to see playing 6-7 minutes a game from the 4th line and he can also drop back and play D when an injury happens or two defensemen wind up in the box together.

I still am amazed to see people continually putting DeAngelo behind Fox. DeAngelo is a much much better player I really don’t think it’s close. He was our best dman last year put up 30 points in like what barely 60 games if that? He didn’t come out of nowhere. Flat out dominated junior hockey. Was a top draft pick. I don’t get it really don’t.

I’m protecting Hajek Tony and Trouba. Skjei can be exposed. Fox is exempt I believe as would be Miller if he’s here.

If Skjei is still on the team, the Rangers can protect him without any issue.

Trouba
DeAngelo
Skjei

Lindgren is dealt in a package for a center or is exposed. Unless he improves drastically between now and then that's not a huge loss.

Panarin
Zibanejad
Andersson
Chytil
Howden
Buchnevich?

Can and will be protected up front. Kreider is dealt by then, as are Namestnikov and Fast.

Georgiev is protected in expansion. Hank's contract is up.

Kravtsov, Kakko are exempt.

The Rangers are in a very good spot for this expansion draft.

Edit: Forgot Hajek. Ya, protect Hajek if he keeps progressing and trade Skjei for a center.

He can’t kill penalties.
