The Oilers drafting outside of the slam dunk picks (and even then...) has been just plain bad and is a big reason they've failed to put a good team around the talent they drafted high. You can't really rebuild a team if the only draft picks that amount to anything are your first round picks
It extends further than that. They've rarely acquired a player of value by any means other than drafting them with the first few picks of a draft.

By the way, we've routinely seen high-end UFAs turn down an extra million dollars from the top bidder or so to go to the team they want to go to. Tavares did it. Stamkos did it to stay where he was. Shattenkirk did it. The Rangers are relying on that here.

JT and Shattenkirk signed with the teams they grew up rooting for and Stamkos stayed in TB.

What connection does Panarin have to the Rangers to take less money?

Brace yourself for the worst.

Comparing to McDavid money is stupid. Salary value increases year to year as the leagues growth increases. McDavid’s yearly AAV is probably worth $14-$15 at this point. Its not comparable for Panarin to draw on that

Plus Panarin has no RFA years.

It's still not a good investment for NYR right now, even before we factor in that we'd have to buy out players like Staal and Smith which would hurt us 3-4 years down the line. I don't want 5 million in dead cap sitting around in 2022-2023 because we just needed to try to fit Panarin onto a rebuilding roster.

Listen, if I'm AP's agent, I leak out to anyone that wants to listen and spread it that my client is looking for 12+

This scares away the pretenders.

Those with a legit shot at signing him know that number to be discounted by 10-20%

So, to move away from Panarin for a minute, what options do the Rangers have for 2C (assuming Chytil/Howden/Lias aren't ready for that role)? Right now our options look like Strome or Namestnikov - not exactly thrilling.

Duchene and Pavelski are going to be too expensive and want too much term. Brassgod could MAYBE be a stopgap depending on $ and term.

Right now I feel like 2C and 1LD are our biggest holes. Anyone have any creative ideas to address 2C, or do we just roll with one of Strome/Nams and hope that one of the kids is ready by the end of next season?
I think it’ll be Chytil and Strome rotating in and out. I think it’d be really short sighted to sign a guy to be the 2C in a year where you’re trying to let the younger players develop

It doesn't need to be thrilling. This isn't a year where we're going all-in.

If Chytil or Andersson aren't ready i'd much rather play a guy like Strome or Namestnikov and raise their deadline rental value than go pursue someone who will be redundant in 2 years.

Promote from within which will require some patience and experimentation.

If he takes 11 do you do it? Think he may take less here

RB wouldn't want him for 10M.

All the player needs is to like the team and like the city. There doesn't need to be any more connection than that.

I don't use the term often, but BALK at that price. 7x12 would be a marked overpayment for a player we don't know fits the needs this team will have in 2-3 years.
Whatever else Gorton has in his head, one thing I am confident that he has a number in his head that he is comfortable with and will not go beyond it. That goes for trade making. That goes for signing players, be they UFAs or their own.

I've been thinking about it for eight months now, and I still can't decide if I want them to sign Panarin.
It’s all price and term for me, and with free agency being the way it is and the numbers and stuff that are out there, I’m more on the Don’t Do It side. But I wasn’t into the idea of trading for Trouba until I saw what was given up for him, so I’m holding out until I see the deal

Come on RB you know what the deal is. It’s just not your game plan so your playing blind to it

It’s negotiating. That’s panarins official starting point. brooks say 11-11.25 and carp 11.5.

They will meet in the middle. Between 11.6-12.

The rangers aren’t losing him over 725k-1mil

Of course

Guys saying oh I want him at 11 but if it’s 12 a year no way. You think you don’t negotiate there? Talking a million dollars. If you wanted him at 11 as the Rangers clearly do or they wouldn’t be doing this then they’re not going to let him walk over a million dollars. They’ll figure it out.

The presumption here is that he will take less money to be a Ranger? And possibly less years with somewhat limited NTC/NMC?

Term is not going to be the issue. Everyone knows before you make the phone call you’re going to have to be at 7 years.

If it is I certainly don't know where the presumption is coming from because there has been no indication of that whatsoever, quite the opposite in fact.

MOVES
  1. Buyout B. Smith
  2. Trade Chris Kreider (50% retained) and Brady Skjei for William Nylander and their 2020 4th rounder
  3. Trade Jimmy Vesey, Jesper Fast, Ryan Gropp and signing rights to Nico Gross to EDM for Z Kassian, Brandon Manning, Jessi Puljujärvi (loan out to Frölunda/SHL this season) and their 2020 2nd round pick
  4. Trade Bo Nieves to Florida for a 2020 7th rounder
Other thoughts
  1. Give the RFAs bridge deals sans Trouba (under
  2. Sign UFAs Adam McQuaid (1 year), Dion Phaneuf (2 years) & Michael Ferland (3 years) all for reasonable amounts
  3. Watch Mats Zuccarello resigns in Dallas - rendering NYR the Dallas 1st round pick in 2020
  4. Skip the Breadman and Duchene thoughts. Stay the course
