Morrow is not likely to be the answer at #1 RHD. Could he fill in for the Burns or TDA level we’ve had as of late? Sure. But if 4 nations didn’t show you how much we could use an actual top RHD paired with Slavin then you just weren’t watching. They don’t come available often but I’d say it’s one of our biggest needs, ahead of 2C. Although there is the option of trying Nikishin next to Slavin, which I’m an advocate for.

The upside of going for Morrow from a roster management standpoint, though, can't be understated, because a successful Slavin-Morrow pairing would give the Canes yet another opportunity for a cap-saving long-term RFA extension like the ones given out to Svechnikov and Jarvis. Also, if Nikishin and Morrow pan out, they would give a huge youth infusion into the blue-line right when the Canes could use it.

Dreger on insider trading tonight says it’s unlikely Rantanen is dealt and it’ll take a silly offer from someone for Tulsky and Dundon to consider it.

Well duh. They want to re-sign him. They absolutely don't want another Guentzel to happen.

Okay but if he doesn’t sign by Friday you do run the risk of another Guentzel happening?

I think the risk is way less with Rantanen than Guentzel, though there are no guarantees, of course. They dealt for him at a much earlier time, are starting the negotiations earlier, and have a ridiculous amount of cap space to make it all happen.

I'm not sure it's that much less of a risk. We knew an actually number from Guentzel early on, they just waiting too long to meet it. Has there been any indication on what numbers Rants is looking for outside of "equal to MacKinnon" while in Colorado.

We knew guentzal's number, but we also knew that pittsburgh was only trading him because he made clear he wanted to test free agency. I think the canes got close to convincing him not to do so but once the tampa interest got to his agent it was over.

Funny that rants is the opposite. Pitt traded guentzal because he wanted to be a free agent, avs traded rants in spite of his desire to stay. It's a business, i guess

Carolina was also trying to thread a needle of space available and players they would like to keep within that (Guentzel, Skjei, Pesce) at the right price. As it turns out they kept none.

This season they can afford to overpay the top target due to space available and not having other huge priorities to re-sign. After Rantanen, the #2 priority is either Hall or Andersen depending on your opinion of Andersen. Orlov would be there if Nikishin doesn't come over for some reason.

I’m going to need a truly impressive display out of Morrow to believe he’s better at NHL level defense than Burns or TDA. He was sub par defensively at the NCAA level a year ago to the point he wasn’t allowed on the ice in key defensive moments, didn’t kill penalties and was generally really rough to watch most nights in that aspect of his game. To think he’s come so far that he’s better in the NHL than NHL players is a lot of hope.

To be fair Burns and TDA have no business being allowed on the ice in key defensive moments either

Tony is +2 so far on the Isles playing second pair minutes. Most of his career with us he did a damn good job. I think Orlov was as much to blame as Tony his second go around, and he couldn’t turn it around after that start. He’s earned the general reputation of not being a great defender but he’s proven more than once he can do the job.

Burns imo is struggling under the weight of not being Pesce and being thrown into Pesce situations. He’s struggling for sure, but I feel anyone who throws dismissive comments towards these two is missing my overall point.

Scott Morrow has NHL offensive potential. His defensive potential the day he left college would be as a third pair pp specialist like TDA is seen, if he was playing for a team like SJ - not a team like us…..and I mean a few years down the road after development. People are saying he’s improved after a half season in the AHL, I’d love to believe they’re right but going from a 1 to a 3 or 4 defensively would be massive improvement that’s still not even close to what this team needs. I also have no idea what they’re basing it on as there isnt a lot of stats available and few people deep dive watching Chicago. He would still be below what the other two are generally capable of.

Yeah TDA honestly would have been fine paired with a good partner. Orlov is shit and paid 3x his worth, so..... Yeah.

I'll say it for the hundredth time. Letting both Pesce and Skjei go has really killed us and was really stupid. Its not just about shots against, its about those opportunites never happening and the puck going the other way for more chances

Fine with letting Pesce walk but I would have tried to bring back Skjei the left side after Slavin is very questionable

I think the real issue was grinding Jake and taking it to the last day. We got what we deserved with Jake for doing that, but by the time we pivoted back to Skjei and Pesce they were both determined to leave.

I like that Rants is making strides but I’d still take Jake on this team for 9 over Rants for 13. I don’t care about the age difference, I think they’ll both age like crap. I think Jake was a better linemate for Aho. Necas would’ve been moved in the off season presumably for a lower price, but we’d have a first line winger plus whatever Necas brought back.

I still question whether Guentzel would have ever signed before he went to market anyway. As soon as he got the offer, they went out and got the AAV matched with no state taxes. But we've been over that argument.

The agida with Rantanen comes from him honestly saying he hasn't decided if he wants to play the next 8 years in Carolina yet.

I don’t disagree with the point about Jake, but back to the original point the way we dealt with that contract cost us at least one of Skjei and Pesce which has hurt us far more than losing Jake or the whole Necas/Rants thing.
