I don’t agree with this. Rangers would have had a spot for Hughes in top six
Lol no they wouldn’t have. And he wouldn’t have played PP either.

The rangers drafted laf who was throughout the scouting world a better player than Hughes was and didn’t stick him in the top 6 no matter what. Which is exactly what the devils did.

Would he suddenly develop fast twitch muscle fibres?
Would Hughes suddenly learn how to play defense on the third line?

Dadonov is a type of get thst should cost a 3rd or less. Kravtsov had reported 2nd round pick offered for to Drury when he ran away to Russia last season and Drury wanted more otherwise he’d be gone. Kravtsov’s been back and more or less regular. Should be at least a 2nd now. So using him for rental Dadonov would be an overpayment IMO unless we get something else back or otherwise expand the trade.

Dadonov could be a sneaky good pickup like Vatrano was last year. Good player in a bad situation that we can take advantage of for a discount. Always the Gorton connection with Montreal too. We are due to make a deal with them

Lafreniere was not a better prospect than Hughes.

Trochek is fine. Just keep him the hell away from Panarin.
Seems like everyone needs to be kept away from panarin anymore...

He's a third line center on a contender as I've said since July...

The annoying thing about the new lines is that they clearly aren't even intended to be solutions. They are intended to shake things up for a couple of games before going back to the same old thing. Laf/Kreider/Panarin on the RW has been tried several times. It lasts for a game or two and then they move on to something else. It's wasting time. It's January, and GG has seemingly no idea what his ideal lines might look like.

And rather than trying some things that are new/might work (Kreider with Chytil and Kakko, maybe? Spreading some of the PP talent across both units so there are two viable options when one isn't working?), he's just trying something goofy in the hopes that they snap out of whatever funk they are in at the moment.

Rangers deadline deal.

Rangers send Jones, Kravtsov 1st (Dallas) to Blues for Ivan Barbashev (5 years 3.5) and Dylan Peterson

Rangers trade Blais and Libor Hajek for Liam O’Brien

Rangers trade 4th to Ottawa for Auston Watson

Rangers trade 2ed to Jets for Logan Stanley

The Rangers have one of the toughest second-half schedules in the league. Of their 36 remaining regular-season games, the Rangers will only face four teams with point percentages under .500. They play the Canucks and Blue Jackets twice, in addition to one last matchup with the Senators and Canadiens.

Hughes with #30 for the Debs. Book this guy for 50 goals and 100 points for the next decade. He's getting better each game I watch him.

Fn sucks.
If Hughes was a Ranger, he would not have the same role he has on the Devils. The Rangers have too many players.

I’m expecting nibbles around the edges at this deadline rather than a big swing. @RangerBoy btought up Dadonov. I’m on that wagon for now. Go get him and a 4th line forward who plays a physical game. Motte or Ritchie.

I am really curious if Drury and his team really are pursuing Stanley. That would be a move not just for this season but beyond. Big guys take longer to develop and his size would be a welcome addition to the d-corps moving forward. Even if it’s just a 6D. Size and reach matter come playoff time.

None of what I just discussed should necessitate even a 2nd rounder being moved.
Dadonov would be cheap. He isn't the perfect player. Some of these other players will be expensive to acquire and they have issues.

Gallant is worried about keeping his job.

Rangers should reclaim Hunt

7. Patrick Kane has gone back to back games without recording a shot on goal. You don't see that very often.

Kane is injured. These Chicago media types don't want to discuss Kane is injured. They discuss Davidson will eventually have the discussion with Kane and Toews about their futures. The 32T panel on Saturday night said those talks will take place in mid-February. I heard Elliotte Friedman on Marek's show last week and he said teams believe Toews could be traded for a 2nd or 3rd and double retention is necessary. The price goes up having a 3rd team retain some of the cap hit. Kane is hurt. He needs hip surgery.

Blowing assets on a trade for a broken Kane is one of those moves that would have me saying that I’m done with the team (while really never going anywhere because I’m an addict and a glutton for punishment).

4. Matt Nieto

Position: W
Cap hit: $850,000
Contract status after this season: UFA

I’ve long been a fan of this dude and think he would fit nicely on a defensively-sound fourth line with Zach Aston-Reese and (maybe) Pontus Holmberg. He would also fit in comfortably, given his skating ability and defensive chops, on a Kämpf-led third line. (Because the Sharks are well, not, very good, Nieto has played higher in their lineup.) Nieto is plenty experienced; he’s played in over 600 regular-season games and 55 more in the playoffs, most recently for the Avalanche in 2020. He’ll be comfortable in playoff terrain. Nieto might even contribute a little offensively; he’s headed for his fourth season of 10-plus goals. He’d be right at home on the Leafs’ aggressive penalty kill as well. Most importantly: He should come cheap and makes less than Wayne Simmonds.

If the Rangers are looking to add a depth player for the 4th line who can kill penalties, Nieto is their guy. The Rangers traded a 5th to Vancouver for Motte. Before the Rangers acquired Motte, the Rangers were rumored to have interest in Cogliano who went to Colorado for a 5th round pick.

Vince had said something about the Rangers looking to add a depth piece. Nieto is making $850,000. The Rangers could potentially re-sign Nieto because they will need all of the NHL minimum or close to NHL minimum players with their cap situation. Valiquette said a team needs 7 to 8 players making NHL minimum/entry level money in the current NHL financial climate. The Rangers have Vesey at $800,000 for the next two seasons. Nieto will get something similar in his next contract.

The Toronto writer mentioned a few other forwards who could fit the Rangers. Lafferty($1.15M for next season). Lorentz($1.05M for next season). Gadjovich(RFA this summer).

The NHL/AHL threshold increases for next season. $25,000 more. $775,000 from $750,000. Add $375,000. $1,150,000. Theoretically, the Rangers could add a player like Lafferty or Lorentz and the Rangers could send them to the AHL and not take a cap hit if things don't work out.

The Blues and Jets trades are absolutely awful.

Add Josh Leivo to the list of depth forward who would make sense this year but also may be someone the team could re-sign ala Vesey for a couple of seasons. He's been a good possession winger almost every time he has been in the NHL. 12 points in 35 games this year with St Louis, UFA at years end. Bridging the last 3 years in the NHL he has 33 takeaways to 18 giveaways (not a perfect stat) in 80 games played. This tells me, and also confirms from watching him, that he is good with the puck.

Its time to waive Hajek, just as a favor to him. Harpur has the spot. Let Hajek get games in the AHL or try to move on with another org.

Sign me up for guys like Dadonov, Nieto & Stanley. Will any of those guys cost more than a 3rd or 4th round pick? I doubt it. But all 3 are NHL quality players who can help us. There would be very little risk to adding 2 forwards and a defenseman at those low costs.

As for the cap situation going forward, Miller & Chytil are the priority. I don't see a ton of trouble getting either guy signed to comparable RFA contracts that weve discussed (4-5 mil for Chytil, 4.5 to 5.5 for Miller). Laf will be bridged like Kakko. The rest of the RFAs will take the minimum or be gone. Goodrow buyout (saves ~4mil on the cap the next 2 years) is the failsafe if something unforseen arises. Krav/Gaut or Hajek will go to arbitration to keep the second buyout window open.

I'm an optimist, but winning the Cup this year with a team like Boston out there is going to be a very tall task. I do think once were in, the Rangers can beat anyone and have as good a shot as anyone to come out of the Metro. The only way we go further than that is if Hartemi returns. We will have a better shot to win Cups with the core of Fox, Miller, Mika, Igor, the young D and the Kid line progressing. We have 8 major contributors under the age of 24. Make sure to lock those guys up and we will be a 10 year contender like everyone wants.

I knew that Lafreniere was being outscored by Stutzle and Raymond. I did not realize that Lafreniere was being outscored by 18OA Devils pick Dawson Mercer.
