Chytil was mocked late first round, and a few of us on the board wanted him with our second 1st round pick.
I know it's going back to the dinosaurs, but I remember Alex Kovalev being one of those "who?" Picks. For the record I wanted highly touted WHL defensemen Brent Bilodeau, confirming my "Director of Amateur Scouting" status. As in, "I am an amateur" as opposed to "I scout amateurs".

If the Rangers are smart they’ll trade Strome this summer while his value is at its highest and move Chytil up 2C and get a 3C that is a bit more defensively responsible

That said I’m sure Zibanejad and Chytil will get moved and somehow Strome will stay
I don't even think Eichel could pass the physical at this point. There would need to be permission to have Eichel see NYR doctors, many evaluations, the stated desire of Eichel to have surgery, etc. Everyone seems to assume the Rangers are getting Eichel, but I see a lot of hurdles that have to be jumped for a situation that has too many downsides. Until concrete medical answers are and projections are reached, Eichel is probably a big no.

Sorry: I meant to reply to another post and my page must have loaded something a little slow and moved things as I clicked reply. Don't worry about responding to this.

Depends on which draft prognostications you're looking at. Thinking McIlrath was projected 2nd round by some circles.

Most had him in the 1st, but one had McIlrath ranked 45th.

Outside of Chytil, have we ever selected someone in the 1st that wasn't projected to go in the 1st?

Andersson was a reach. Still ranked by most as a first rounder. 25th by ISS. I think in the 20's by Redline. 7OA was such a gift for the NY Rangers who missed like what felt like an eternity of 1st and 2nd round picks due to Sather trades. So they take the podium with both Suzuki and Vilardi still on the board. I was pumped! Were finally getting a super talented Center. I was never more angry with Gordie Clark and the scouting staff than this moment when they selected Andersson. I was furious at this pick. Like toss the remote furious. I was a big Suzuki fan pumping him as the pick for a while. I was a big fan of Vilardi as well, but didn't think Vilardi would be there.

Kravtsov wasn't on most radars until Redline put him up at 10th. Blackbook followed shortly after and ranked him 6th! Secret got out that the Rangers were following him for like a full year, and even Bobfather talked about it. He shot up the rankings. ISS Scouting had Kravtsov at 36th. Future Considerations had him at 28th. Farabee was like my fav from this draft. But, Bouchard and Dobson were also available. I wasn't dissapointed with Kravtsov as the pick. We had insight here on HF that he was the guy. Things leaked out from Bobfather, Redline and a few other places. I wasn't disapointed, but had 3 players ahead of him that I thought were better picks. Kravstsov is a very talented player. Looking forward to next season to see what he can do.

As a 2nd Stepan was a total reach. After the pick, a lot of people were saying...Who? Rangers got that one right.

Must have been hard at that time to navigate the early rounds of the draft with the uncertainty of the Russian prospects. Lucky for us Neil Smith was ahead of the game in that department. And even then in 1992 he was having doubts about Alex but was so in love with the talent, he was not going to give him up that quickly.

I liked the forwards in the 1991 draft, didn't know much about Kovalev, I figured he'd probably be a second or third round selection. Peake, Rolston, Wright and Mccamond were names I remember being mocked for the Rangers.

I don't know what he's got left but I'd love to give him a PTO for next year. If noting else, maybe he pushes some competition for the 4th line with the likes of Richards and co and can stick as a 13th forward at league minimum.
Should have signed him this past year. Bet a substantial amount of money he wouldve scored more than 1 lousy goal #PetHowden

I'm more okay keeping Strome as a 'self rental' for a year and trading Zibanejad than I am the opposite.

Trade Zibanejad, Buch, Hajek, Georgiev
Acquire a Young center prospect, bottom-6 role players, picks

Zibanejad to Vegas for Krebs + Reaves
Buch to Edmonton for Holloway + Khaira
Georgiev to Buffalo for 3rd '21
Hajek to Detroit for 3rd '21

Sign Martinook if his contract demands are not outlandish. Otherwise go for Bonino on a short deal.

im worried they are trading the 1st for a vet lol
God forbid. The next three years are going to be years we need to keep our 1st rounders. This year is a crap shoot because of the turbulence and next year because of the abundance of players that will be available because of the turbulence of this year. Teams that have traded away their picks and/or that do not have a deep prospect pool might have to draft players in 2021 that will no longer be eligible in 2022 due to age restrictions. 2023 has Connor Bedard, Matveil Michkov and Dalibor Dvorsky plus players that haven’t even jumped onto the radar.

Gotta tell you reading more about Eichel’s neck injury we’d be nuts to trade for this kid. This is a serious serious injury that surgery doesn’t guarantee will get him back to 100%.

Even if Buffalo said hey a first round pick is all we want I still think we’d be nuts taking a 10 mil cap hit for a guy who we don’t know will ever be the same and it’s not just the neck

he was battling thru a core injury as well. A high ankle sprain a broken rib. I mean he’s beat up

I feel like most here do not appreciate this. It’s likely why Buffalo wouldn’t let him get the surgery. Post-surgery complications include the possibility of paralysis (albeit rare) or loss of sensation in hands (more common).

Not true.

Buffalo isn't allowing him to get the procedure that he wants to get done because its very new and there are 0 hockey players who have had it done. I'm 90% sure (withholding 10% only because it is Buffalo) that they'd allow him to get a standard discectomy done since but Jack doesn't want to go this route since based off of the information out there, it will double his recovery time.

Great experience for Jones, but the USA needs to find some way to not be in the relegation round every IIHF tournament. Have some damn national pride. I know its not a big deal here but we send a NCAA roster every year.

So you think that risks of a relatively new procedure don’t fit into that calculation? ...interesting.

If Eichel is going to be a no go for us, who else do we think that we're going to pursue? I'm curious who could possibly be had in a trade aside from him.

This is a weird offseason with the flat cap and coming off a covid year and also the fact that NHL GMs are notoriously risk averse to begin with. Very curious to see who we target and who will even be available.

People talk about Barkov but there's an extremely miniscule chance he leaves Florida. I don't even know who else would be available for us to target.

We're going to be interested in a top 6 center, top 4 LD and some grit, yeah?

no I do. I don’t want him no matter what he gets done to his neck. But Buffalo isn’t holding him back from surgery all together
By “the surgery”, I was referring to the specific surgery. I did not say that Buffalo was refusing any and all surgeries.
