My hope is Skjei can pair really well with Trouba. I don't wanna see Staal with Trouba. If Staal has to play he should play no where else other than 6th dman.

The Staal-Girardi pairing prior to Staal's injury was lockdown. Afterwards, alllllllllll downhill for both and for that collective pairing. McDonagh-Girardi was just as bad.

If Staal never got injured. If Sauer never got injured...a top-4 of Staal-Girardi and McDonagh-Sauer could've gotten us far.

Staal-Girardi was never a good pairing.

Completely unrelated to the recent topics, but figured I'd post it here. As a new Minneapolis resident, I went to my first ever "dabeauty league" games last night. It was incredible - $10 admission for three games (45 minutes long each), I saw front row against the glass the entire evening. McDonagh, Justin Braun, Anders Lee, JVR, Mittelstadt, Stepan, Goligoski, Skjei, etc. all playing. From the Rangers, it was just Skjei, Lettieri, Tyler Nanne, and Fogarty. A few thoughts:
  • Every single time I see this caliber of player up close, I'm flabbergasted by how talented they are. The worst player in the AHL or even ECHL is an absolutely phenomenal hockey player.
Yeah seeing NHL players and an NHL game at ice level and real speed can be pretty humbling and enlightening. It's a worlds difference watching on TV vs being at ice level, hell even being up in the 200's section live vs ice level. The difference is staggering, you forget how little time and space exists out there and how fast the game is.

Couple that with actually having played the sport and understanding the degree of difficulty of being able to do what they do on 2 razor blades and frozen water, it’s simply remarkable. Hands down the best sport.

They didn't play together much in 2012 or 2013 prior to Staal's eye injury.

They were each others' primary partners the 2 years before that and each of them performed better away from the other one.

Honestly, how do you even recall let alone differentiate between such detail? I picture you with VHS tapes of 2004 preseason games at your moms house.

Are you serious?

Both Girardi and Staal at one time were very good players--particularly Staal. There was an argument that went on for the first 3-4-5 years of McDonagh's career where a lot of people thought Staal was the better player. The concussion Marc got from his brother Eric is what started his downward spiral--it's also when Girardi more than less became McDonagh's partner. Tortorella had a great effect on how Girardi's and Staal's games then developed or maybe a better word is devolved. Girardi became the shot blocking king of the world playing through all kinds of minor injuries and some of the shots he blocked would probably have killed a bear. But they had years of shutting down the likes of Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin playing crazy amounts of minutes. Speaking of blocking shots though the deflection that Staal took off the head caved a good portion of his head in. It's kind of amazing it didn't end his career.
