Completely unrelated to the recent topics, but figured I'd post it here. As a new Minneapolis resident, I went to my first ever "dabeauty league" games last night. It was incredible - $10 admission for three games (45 minutes long each), I saw front row against the glass the entire evening. McDonagh, Justin Braun, Anders Lee, JVR, Mittelstadt, Stepan, Goligoski, Skjei, etc. all playing. From the Rangers, it was just Skjei, Lettieri, Tyler Nanne, and Fogarty. A few thoughts:
- Every single time I see this caliber of player up close, I'm flabbergasted by how talented they are. The worst player in the AHL or even ECHL is an absolutely phenomenal hockey player.
- In the first game (which included players like McDonagh, Braun, Nick Bjugstad, Eric Condra), Lettieri was the best player on the ice. He was dancing and dangling around the other team, had the puck on his stick for what seemed like half the game, and was flying by most players. Granted, all these guys are going at ~75%, but it was a nice reminder that a ton of the "tweener" guys that don't cut it at the NHL (Great D1 players or AHL all stars like Vinny, or a Jason Krog or a Brad Smyth) have just as many physical tools and talents as many of the stars in the NHL. So much of what makes an NHL player is mental and cerebral.
- On that topic, Step was the slowest skater and worst stick handler on the ice, by far (which included, as I mentioned, D1 players and AHL/ECHL players). But he still was one of the most dangerous. So many guys that skate like the wind and can stickhandle down 5th ave are so predictable. Step, being one of the most cerebral players in the NHL, is the opposite. He opens up d-men's legs and makes passes through the five hole. He leaves defenders & goalies guessing what he's going to do next, even though he seems so deliberate. It's really special to watch.
- Putting aside his hockey and his contract and everything else about the Rangers rebuild - I miss Step so much. He's such a goofy MFer, skating up and down the ice during gameplay with the biggest ****-eating grin on his face. He was messing around and shooting pucks at the kids up against the glass between whistles, goofing off on the ice, warmed up with the opposing team...the guy is hysterical and is so easy to root for.
EDIT: to make that long post more relevant to the roster building thread, I'll end with this note: I saw some good things out of Lettieri, I hope what I saw was a sign that he's ready to take the next step and become a regular NHLer as opposed to what I wrote in my second bullet above.
