It's my hope that they feel good enough about ADA to not have a veteran shotgunning him. Hoping one of Hajek and Lindgren to step in and Staal rides with Fox.

This would be horrible for Fox.

His bread and butter is his offense. Going to have a tough time further developing that with tanner staal as his partner.

Hopefully One of Rykov or Lindgren really shines and relegates Staal to the press box.

Sign me up. But ain't gonna happen. I wouldn't be surprised to see Staal shuffle up and down the RD and end up with Trouba for periods of time.

how exactly do they calculate summer cap? because we have like 50 contracts and obviously they don't all count. Do they count the 22 highest contracts? Also, are we saving the full AAV if Smith plays in Hartford?

Where are you getting 50 contracts? We have 43 according to CapFriendly:

New York Rangers - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Though if you count the actual contracts, we have 44, so it seems their number is wrong unless they are expecting one of those contracts to not count. Other than maybe Reunanen if he goes back to Europe, they should all count.

When ADA and Lemmy sign, that will make 46.

It's all one-way contracts, all two-way contracts with the hit being prorated to games played in the past season (it's games played or days on roster, I don't remember), and qualifying offers until the QO expires. There may be a couple other small thing but I think those are the main elements.

Days on roster.

I agree 100% but the armchair-gm-shall-not-question-professionals has been used to shut down any criticism lately. But it's open season when the opposite is convenient. And God forbid that armchair gm get it wrong, being cool with a future bad contract will get you roasted 2 years later. Your opinion is worthless until we can rub your face in it.

This recent "he's the professional " defense of gorton made me chuckle because I immediately thought of Chiarelli and Fenton. What if the same defense was used there?

GMs are going to get it wrong sometimes, and unfortunately you get burned for being a bad prophet. Talon built a perennial winner but his career highlight is missing a deadline. Forget the 3 cups his blueprint earned. Gorton didn't see the wheels falling off the wagon before he signed Shattenkirk. I'm not crucifying him for it but he should own it. It hung a $6m cap penalty on the team next year, I hope he doesn't forget any lesson from it.

Gorton earned a lot of rope, but this summer will make or break this organization's chances at a cup over the next 10 years.
Hey We got Kaapo Kakko. :)

Reunanen will count no matter what, as he's 21.

Completely unrelated to the recent topics, but figured I'd post it here. As a new Minneapolis resident, I went to my first ever "dabeauty league" games last night. It was incredible - $10 admission for three games (45 minutes long each), I saw front row against the glass the entire evening. McDonagh, Justin Braun, Anders Lee, JVR, Mittelstadt, Stepan, Goligoski, Skjei, etc. all playing. From the Rangers, it was just Skjei, Lettieri, Tyler Nanne, and Fogarty. A few thoughts:
  • Every single time I see this caliber of player up close, I'm flabbergasted by how talented they are. The worst player in the AHL or even ECHL is an absolutely phenomenal hockey player.

  • In the first game (which included players like McDonagh, Braun, Nick Bjugstad, Eric Condra), Lettieri was the best player on the ice. He was dancing and dangling around the other team, had the puck on his stick for what seemed like half the game, and was flying by most players. Granted, all these guys are going at ~75%, but it was a nice reminder that a ton of the "tweener" guys that don't cut it at the NHL (Great D1 players or AHL all stars like Vinny, or a Jason Krog or a Brad Smyth) have just as many physical tools and talents as many of the stars in the NHL. So much of what makes an NHL player is mental and cerebral.

  • On that topic, Step was the slowest skater and worst stick handler on the ice, by far (which included, as I mentioned, D1 players and AHL/ECHL players). But he still was one of the most dangerous. So many guys that skate like the wind and can stickhandle down 5th ave are so predictable. Step, being one of the most cerebral players in the NHL, is the opposite. He opens up d-men's legs and makes passes through the five hole. He leaves defenders & goalies guessing what he's going to do next, even though he seems so deliberate. It's really special to watch.

  • Putting aside his hockey and his contract and everything else about the Rangers rebuild - I miss Step so much. He's such a goofy MFer, skating up and down the ice during gameplay with the biggest shit-eating grin on his face. He was messing around and shooting pucks at the kids up against the glass between whistles, goofing off on the ice, warmed up with the opposing team...the guy is hysterical and is so easy to root for.

EDIT: to make that long post more relevant to the roster building thread, I'll end with this note: I saw some good things out of Lettieri, I hope what I saw was a sign that he's ready to take the next step and become a regular NHLer as opposed to what I wrote in my second bullet above.

There are a lot of guys I miss from the last era. Stepan is one of them. Already Zuccarello. I still wish Dubinsky was a Ranger and it's been 7 years. Nature of being a fan I guess.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Callahan and Girardi are on that list for me too. Contract aside, steep declines and health issues aside...those were guys that I loved rooting for and wish could have won a cup.

For sure on G.

Hated the way Cally left but with the way his career has ended, hard to be mad at him anymore. No one deserves to retire a senator

I wonder if Danny G gets another contract or if his playing days are done in the NHL.

Gorton is taking a lot of heat for this move. It think the focus is wrong there.

The real question is, why didn’t we do everything possible after last season to dump Shatty? It was extremely obvious this would happen. The “we shouldn’t trade him now when his value is at an all time low”-notion was tremendously naive. 24 of 25 times when people think that around this league the result is that the value keeps going down.

And many will say, there was no way to predict this demise. But there certainly was.

I miss Anisimov and his shotgun celly.

And I also miss Andre Deveaux and Erik Christensen.

My understanding is that he's been trying to trade him non-stop since like January.

1 yr $800k to NYR.

God I would love to see the melt down.
Almost want it to happen for that reason.

Stone is my first choice.

To be honest if they did sign Girardi to be a 7th defenseman i really would not hate it. He is a fantastic lockerroom guy, teammates love him. But we all know he would end up getting regular starts and we would end up with a Staal-Girardi pair as the 2nd pair. Nightmare

Triggered.

Always going to love Callahan.

He was part of the core that made this team actually fun to watch again.
