Rykov played the right side in the KHL a decent amount.

But you're right, gotta stick lefties on the left side and righties on the right side and nothing else.

I'm the last person who believes that... @Ola and I have had some good discussions on the topic... but I didn't think Rykov's time on the right was significant. Someone clear that up for us?

What I do believe is that the side you come up playing is what's most important. So if a lefty comes up playing on the right, that's fine... but you can't just take someone who is a LD and move him over.

We're jumping through hoops to save cap space and are talking about trying to sign DeAngelo/Lemieux to very cheap 1 year deals so why are we going to go ahead and sign a veteran D to a cheap 1 year deal to use up the remainder of the cap space so we don't accrue any?

This stuff happened YEARS ago... its almost like people never grow up though, amirite?

No. He was scratched for those maturity issues this past season. Listen i have no issue with wanting to sign him to a solid deal but im not going to go over 3 years and there is no reason to give a player who has shown the ability to put up points for 1 season. We have a ton of defensive prospects who will be coming through the pipeline. My only issue would be if someone wanted to sign him for 4m aav. The guy made under 1m aav his last contract and no way should get over 4x his aav from before

I guess what I'm confused about is the guys who want DeAngelo and Fox to play over Shatty, but would rather have Staal and/or Smith play over Hajek, Rykov, Lindgren and/or Reunanen.

People don’t want Staal or Smith to play over the kids, we’re just resigned to the fact that one of them, most likely Staal, isn’t going anywhere.

I will say this:

If the team looks at Brendan Smith as their defacto #7 defenseman and 13th forward for this year, going into the season with:

Skjei-Trouba
Staal-ADA
_____-_____
Smith

Does not all that attractive to me. Specifically on right side where Adam Fox is really the only true viable immediate option for that last spot. The left side is an easier assumption as they have (3) guys, all of whom have pro experience in Lindgren, Rykov and Hajek. Signing a veteran RD for ~$1m as insurance would be smart business move for this organization. If Fox wins a spot in camp, great, then you keep either Smith or the newly signed veteran RD as the #7 going into the season ad waive the other one. I would doubt either one gets snagged on the waiver wire (Smith has no chance)

The real simple solution for the Rangers is to give him a 1 year deal, say for $1.25-$1.4m and then, if he continues to show promise, sign him long term. His value will increase slightly due to another good year but there will be more data to make that decision. If he puts up 40 points in a top-4 role, you're probably looking at $4-5m per season on a 5-6 year deal which I would be just fine with.

That player would either be in Hartford (no cap hit), or he would take a spot and someone else would be sent down (no cap hit). The cap hit would need to be 1.075 or less, preferably lower.

Unless there will be further moves on defense (read Smith) there is no reason to bring an outside veteran.

Smith's versatility and being a better fit to play on the bottom pairs (with lesser contract) are the only reasons he's still with the team instead of Shattenkirk. Bringing another vet for D while keeping Smith is the move I'd criticize criticize G, D & Co.

how exactly do they calculate summer cap? because we have like 50 contracts and obviously they don't all count. Do they count the 22 highest contracts? Also, are we saving the full AAV if Smith plays in Hartford?

It's all one-way contracts, all two-way contracts with the hit being prorated to games played in the past season (it's games played or days on roster, I don't remember), and qualifying offers until the QO expires. There may be a couple other small thing but I think those are the main elements.

In a very basic sense, it just counts the main 23-man roster towards the cap, along with buried contracts above the buriable relief limit, buyouts, etc.

In the summer, teams are given a 10% buffer. They still need to get under the cap by the time the season begins.

As for Smith, the Rangers only save the current calculated buriable cap relief, which is $1.075M. So we'd still carry a $3.275M cap hit if we buried him in Hartford instead of $4.35M.

EDIT: nevermind, misinterpreted the summer thing. I imagine it's a combo of one-way deals, prorated games from the previous season, etc.

No one gets it right all the time. But Gorton is getting right most of the time. Time will tell.
I agree 100% but the armchair-gm-shall-not-question-professionals has been used to shut down any criticism lately. But it's open season when the opposite is convenient. And God forbid that armchair gm get it wrong, being cool with a future bad contract will get you roasted 2 years later. Your opinion is worthless until we can rub your face in it.

This recent "he's the professional " defense of gorton made me chuckle because I immediately thought of Chiarelli and Fenton. What if the same defense was used there?

GMs are going to get it wrong sometimes, and unfortunately you get burned for being a bad prophet. Talon built a perennial winner but his career highlight is missing a deadline. Forget the 3 cups his blueprint earned. Gorton didn't see the wheels falling off the wagon before he signed Shattenkirk. I'm not crucifying him for it but he should own it. It hung a $6m cap penalty on the team next year, I hope he doesn't forget any lesson from it.

Gorton earned a lot of rope, but this summer will make or break this organization's chances at a cup over the next 10 years.

Does anyone think Colorado was like we better get a veteran D Incase Makar can’t make the team.

I’m not the biggest fox fan but that’s more in terms of upside. He was better than makar last year. The guy is an nhl dman. You don’t bring in scrubs to block your talented youth. We’ve done that forever

Yeah if the rookies cant outplay Smith, keep him in the 6.

Fox was not better than Makar last year, and I honestly don't think you'll find many people that agree with you on that point.

Fox honestly with a competent partner getting 13-15 minutes 5v5 with tons of PP time is a perfect way to break him in.

If he’s going to be shoehorned next to Staal ala Pionk then yeah, send him down.

Yup, or if they can - he's either a healthy scratch, a fill in as an injury protection both at D or F and a competition to make sure there's no internal complacency.

So what? Not that I disagree because 23 to me is still extremely young, but you have players put on waivers who are even younger. Hell, look at Pool Party. People are calling him a bust and he's only 21.

Hockey Skill and personal development are not the same?

It's my hope that they feel good enough about ADA to not have a veteran shotgunning him. Hoping one of Hajek and Lindgren to step in and Staal rides with Fox.
