Here's an interesting one now. I always thought Kravtsov was essentially a lock to start in the NHL but is it possible he begins the year in Hartford? Assuming no forwards are moved...

Panarin - Mika - Kakko
Kreider - Chytil - Buchnevich
Namestnikov - Andersson - Strome
Lemieux - Howden - Fast

I don't see who sits for him out of the gate.

I guess its always possible that Lias starts with the pack?

If they don't make any moves it'll ultimately be up to him to steal a spot away from someone.

The main boards are insufferable with the "Rangers gonna Ranger" talk. Really wish there was an understanding that this was a cap move and not a buyer's remorse move. There is/was a good chance Shattenkirk will rebound.

Also, a handful of teams were lining up with 7x7. But, you know...HF+Logic/Reality=

Marc Staal declining since 2015 and Girardi and Shattenkirk gets bought out while he coasts to the end of his contract.

I don't agree. I'm not saying this is a win-first team, but you cannot call this team as still rebuilding

Panarin and Trouba will be here during the rebuild and will be here at the end of it. They're part of it and they're our core vets going forward.

As the Rangers plan comes more into focus, sometimes I wonder what Lundqvist thinks of it. I think he's smart enough to know that this team isn't built to win this year or next, but a part of me wonders if he's thinking Panarin/Trouba/Kakko could potentially lead us deep in the playoffs in the next two years. Personally I just can't see that happening quite yet. I think the King's best chance at a cup is if he re-signs for cheap once his contract is up, 1-2 years to split time with Shestyorkin and the Rangers ride the hotter of the two. Not sure if he'd be open to it or if winning a cup as a backup would even be meaningful to someone as competitive as him.

So then why hamstring yourself next season when you can possibly sign a 2C?

Why overpay a FA when you might have something with any of Kaako, Kravtsov, Howden, Chytil, Andersson, etc? (Never mind the fact a bunch of cap is coming off next year). Why sell low on Kreider, DeAngelo, Buchnevich, or someone else? Strome likely is what he is at this point. If he's playing as 2C, we're not hurting his development.

The reality is that it sucks to buy out Shattenkirk with the dead hit but it made sense to avoid forcing any prospects into roles they're not ready for on the left side and removes the leverage any other teams thought they had in trying to get us to take lesser returns for pieces. All done in one move as opposed to the multiple that would be needed if it was Smith that was bought out.

Wait, what? There's rumored interest in Names? So then why not trade him!!?! Rid yourself of 4M and then buy out Smith and you save the same amount as you do with the Shattenkirk buyout but with much better cap implications for the future.

Yes. There was plenty of discussion around here at the draft that Namestnikov was someone teams were looking at. The problem is you're almost certainly not trading him to a team who has a use for him without needing to take some salary back. I think it's safe to say that once the rest of the off-season plays out it will make more sense as to why the Rangers did what they did.

Maybe this is Chinese whispers. No one knows when the window officially opens or closes. Larry speculates strong words in a click bait article. Beat writers follow suit. League wide reporters jumping in as well. Cap friendly cites Brett what's his name and throws up presumed buyout figure making it look official. I'd really like to see an official source on this.

Maybe between bringing in Trouba and maximizing Fox and DeAngelo's development opportunities, there was no ice time for Shatty to rebuild his value.

I suppose if Gorton knows there wasn't gonna be a chance to move him now even at 50% then it makes sense. It just really sucks since I believe there's still a decent player in there somewhere.
I suppose we have to trust the judgement of the guys in the room that this is the right long term move and not just some quick bandaid fix because they have delusions of competing this year.

The only upside to a Shatty buyout, for me, is that he was more likely to block a promising player's development this season than Staal/Smith.

And that's me trying to put rose colored glasses on.
