This is an excellent post, Nicky, and a sentiment I concur with wholeheartedly.

Glad to hear that. The lets be like Florida/Arizona stuff last summer got old fast. I understand draft day is fun but the thought of purposefully throwing away many seasons with no guarantee we will even be this good in 5 years is something I have a hard time swallowing.

The other day somebody on another teams board said, be patient we are only in year 7 of a 10 year rebuild. We need 3 more 1st round picks. That made me laugh but I think he was serious.

This is where I fall on the issue at this point. The only thing that is giving me pause is that I really, really, think the Rangers could have won the Cup this year. They didn't win obviously, and because of that you can certainly disagree with me, but in spite of that atrocious defense, the Rangers lost to Ottawa because of bad bounces and stubborn coaching.

I am fully on board with the "you must have elite talent, particularly at Center" to win the Cup argument. That said, the Rangers have come really close to bucking that trend. They haven't been mediocre with this core, they've been really, really good. Not good enough, I know, but definitely not mediocre.

I can't see Gorton getting this team over the hump via FA though. He's going to have to get creative if the goal is to maintain a legitimate contending team.

I think that's been the plan the entire time. I think Jeff knows he needs that elite talent to compete with the Crosbys, Malkins, Ovi's, Kanes, and Toews of the world.

Among Eastern teams with some interest, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes have all been very tenuously linked to the Russian forward in the past. In our reader poll last month, over 40% voted that he would eventually end up with the Golden Knights, though Toronto and Montreal were second and third respectively.

Where is that from?

Especially if you've been a fan for 30+ years and dedicated tens of thousands of dollars to this team!

D'Angelo was pretty expensive too.

Yep, not sure if the 7th OA was that important to them to get Deangelo, they couldn't have gotten him another way?.. maybe they were just aching to get rid of Stepan before his NMC kicked in

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

24 years old. 4 years left. Has shown more offense in the past. The Rangers have been linked to him in the past.

The Rangers have been successful with 3 good centers. I don't think RNH costs much. They need the cap space for Draisatl and McDavid.

What has been stopping this kid? I have only watched him a limited amount but he has shown some very nice skills.

RNH is more of a weaker version of Stepan ... not to say he doesn't have value, but we can't keep looking at trading for the second tier centers. IMHO, Stepan is a better player than RNH.

No..

I'd agree Stepan is the more valuable player in the same sense Stepan was more valuable than Brassard.

There's nothing wrong with adding a nice 2C who is 24 at lower than market value if it's possible

If I was to propose the following, would you take it:

RNH + Shattenkirk (6 years at $6.5m) + 7th overall + DeAngelo

For

Stepan + Raanta + 2nd '18 + Prospect

Would anyone be opposed?
