I love that you've brought that up ... I think age is talked about WAY too much on HF rather than production / skill set and value.

You are right. Actually age and salary are talked about way too much in my opinion. Once the puck is dropped in the playoffs no real Pitt fan cares if Cullen is going to be 41 or that Kessel has a 7 mill cap hit till 2022. They care about winning the game.

I doubt they're going to trade Zetterberg for Staal (no matter what we throw in)

You are probably right but I always say it never hurts to ask.

Example, SJ calls Boston and asks about trading Sergei Samsonov. Boston says, would you consider taking Joe Thornton instead.

Once again, is there a possibility to make a move for a dynamic top forward? IDK, but if you move Stepan and think you can't IMPROVE on his production to make the team better, you are not better.

I'm looking at the top paid D men to see how Shattenkirk compares to them..

stumbled upon Ekblad.. I know the kid is 21... but he better improve MAJORLY.. He's got a 7.5M cap hit. took a big step back this off season. 21 points in 68 games.

He owes Brian Campbell like 6 of that 7.5

I really have no idea which way this offseason will go. From the insane scenarios to the more realistic, I have no idea what GMJG will do next and for the rest of the summer.

I don't think anyone really knows.

Did he trade Stepan just to dump cap or does he have another move on the horizon and needed some cap?

Think Hayes and next year's 1st rounder is enough? Perhaps Sakic is rethinking things after Calgary and Toronto.

Unless there's a LHD in the mix, it's not a discussion.

So our trade options are Skjei (which Rangers would balk at and I don't blame them), Sean Day (who has the most upside and I don't want to move him), and Ryan Graves (more NHL ready probably) + picks or an NHL player they can use.

We'll know a direction by next weekend. I'd love a Yankees-esque retool/rebuild. It's not apples to apples but Step was a start. Need to add more young assets above and beyond the '17 draft.

Rebuild, retool, restore, tank..... If you only want draft picks and players under age 25 you will have a hard time finding many teams to root for in the NHL. Even among the teams that suck every year they are usually trying to get better and only suck because drafting can be a huge crap shoot. Young does not always equal good and over 25 does not equal bad. If you only want too root for a team that purposefully tries to lose all their games and whose only important day is draft day that is your prerogative but it is very unlikely to happen to the NY Rangers so you may have to find a second team to root for next season.

This is an excellent post, Nicky, and a sentiment I concur with wholeheartedly.

It doesn't have to be rookie young, but just guys who are not in their prime just yet or just entering it.

I am a bit more pessimistic about the Rangers chance to be a contender next year with all the progress made by the other teams in the east. Unless we trade for a Mckinnon type without gutting the team its going to be difficult. I keep looking over the rosters of other teams trying to see who we can trade for and the pickings are slim. I dont mind the Step trade cause we went as far as we could with him. Its not easy getting top tier talent and this is the Rangers problem.

This is where I fall on the issue at this point. The only thing that is giving me pause is that I really, really, think the Rangers could have won the Cup this year. They didn't win obviously, and because of that you can certainly disagree with me, but in spite of that atrocious defense, the Rangers lost to Ottawa because of bad bounces and stubborn coaching.

I am fully on board with the "you must have elite talent, particularly at Center" to win the Cup argument. That said, the Rangers have come really close to bucking that trend. They haven't been mediocre with this core, they've been really, really good. Not good enough, I know, but definitely not mediocre.

I can't see Gorton getting this team over the hump via FA though. He's going to have to get creative if the goal is to maintain a legitimate contending team.

Among Eastern teams with some interest, the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes have all been very tenuously linked to the Russian forward in the past. In our reader poll last month, over 40% voted that he would eventually end up with the Golden Knights, though Toronto and Montreal were second and third respectively.
