I am a bit more pessimistic about the Rangers chance to be a contender next year with all the progress made by the other teams in the east. Unless we trade for a Mckinnon type without gutting the team its going to be difficult. I keep looking over the rosters of other teams trying to see who we can trade for and the pickings are slim. I dont mind the Step trade cause we went as far as we could with him. Its not easy getting top tier talent and this is the Rangers problem.

It depends, I mean if they can get someone comparable to Stepan (without breaking the bank) and go back to having 3 50 point or so centers, while none are elite, that really helped them, and fix the defense, they're a better team than last year. but the question is who and how?

I don't know whether to believe anything Brooks says...

He said there was "no movement" on Stepan to AZ.. and he was traded 2 hours later. so...

He's also insistent that the Rangers need to trade for a 1st pairing RD, and pay a premium price, when all that's really needed is a player that won't be the anchor to McDonagh that Girardi was. I think if FLA wants to part ways with Demers, he'd be a very good fit.

I don't understand why he's so adamant about them not going after Shattenkirk in FA, but wants to give up the kind of assets its going to take to acquire a top notch RHD..

Demers is an interesting option, I don't know if FLA would actually deal him.. Who else has a glutton of D that can use a Forward (not multiple and/or 1sts).

and to be fair, Rangers have a lot more talent than the Yankees did when the Yankees decided they needed to take the plunge and sell off.

Rangers have a lot of good players, they are just missing that one top offensive 1C really.

Yep. I still believe if .... and this is a big if ... but if you able to do this:

Nash - *star center* - Kreider
Zuccarello - Zibanejad - Vesey
Buch - Hayes / Miller - Grabner

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - DeAngelo
Staal - Bereglazov

Obviously this requires dealing either Hayes or Miller in a package and I quite frankly don't care how the 4th line is constructed, but that team CAN compete with Pittsburgh. Having that 1C pushes everyone into a role that is highly suited for them.

Bonino is not going to be worth the contract he gets. I'm hoping Gorton is more creative than just signing UFAs.

I'm not even sure there's a team with a "star center" that's even rebuilding or not very good..?

I don't think that there is anything wrong with wanting to remedy the 1RD solution by getting a player who is younger and cheaper than Shattenkirk.

I prefer that option too.

I think that is sort of true ... I think that really is the missing piece along with signing the defense we want. What's the cost? Who's available? That's what GMJG is going to have to figure out, but my guess is with moving Stepan (we can talk about cap space and his contract and production) they clearly either A have a plan for a big time player OR B are looking to gut this thing. My guess is the former.

Rebuild, retool, restore, tank..... If you only want draft picks and players under age 25 you will have a hard time finding many teams to root for in the NHL. Even among the teams that suck every year they are usually trying to get better and only suck because drafting can be a huge crap shoot. Young does not always equal good and over 25 does not equal bad. If you only want too root for a team that purposefully tries to lose all their games and whose only important day is draft day that is your prerogative but it is very unlikely to happen to the NY Rangers so you may have to find a second team to root for next season.

Yes, but brooks simply doesn't realize how expensive RHDS are too trade for..

Look no further than Adam Larsson and now Hamonic.

They said the same things in Toronto...

Hell, the Yankees are kind of doing it in the same city and they're a much bigger deal.

Extremely fair point. This is where I think Dolan and Cigar are bad for the franchise. The fan base is loyal to a fault and as long and they will keep filling the building no matter what (like the Knicks) ... you can argue the Rangers and Knicks have the most loyal fan bases in the city and Dolan takes adv of that. I'd rather stink for a few years and rebuild and have a 7 year run than trail in mediocrity ... having said that, if this team CAN make a movie for a big time forward or 2 and fix the D ... they can def compete with the Pens.

I love that you've brought that up ... I think age is talked about WAY too much on HF rather than production / skill set and value.

Zetterberg (4 years/6 mill cap) for Staal (4 years/5.7cap) and something tempting. :D

Zetterberg is an interesting idea simply because we can absorb the cap, but I don't like that he's got 4 years left. Would Detroit be willing to eat some of that salary?

Lot of folks think Shattenkirk is inevitable... can't say I don't see it happening. Just hoping its something reasonable especially if he's looking for a long term deal. I'd bet something around 6 years at 6.5.
I'm also more curious as to what else they will go after. Thornton? Is it even possible at all to land MacKinnon or Duchene?

Rangers could probably (maybe) trade Brady Skjei for that top RHD that we need.... and then re sign Smith.. and have something like..

Mcdonagh-Top RHD
Staal-Smith
Holden-DeAngelo...

but no one really wants to trade Skjei.

Duchene? yes.. Mackinnon? no.

His deal is almost identical to Staals so why would they need to eat salary? We would still have a contract but we get back a guy who can still play a bit for a guy that can not play.

Top D in general are costly to trade for. I think when it comes to value of the return of players it goes:

RHD
LHD
Center
Wingers

Also why I say McD would return a ton.

I doubt they're going to trade Zetterberg for Staal (no matter what we throw in)
