Perhaps it's the pieces around him?

His most common linemates are Landeskog, Barrie, Duchene and Johnson since he entered the league. (According to hockeyanalysis)

That's better than some of the garbage Stepan had to play with. (Mainly Girardi and Staal being on the ice at the same time as him)

Yes, that's because Stepan is the least flashy center ever. That doesn't make him any less effective.

MacKinnnon would be the dream center to acquire. I can't see Seguin ever being available. He'd also be great. Also sick of forever having a team made up of 1B and 2nd line centers :(

I'm a fly on the wall in GMJG's office and here's what I'm seeing and hearing:

We are signing Shatty to a 6.5-7.0/5 deal to be our hugely hugely needed RHS PP QB

We are re-signing Smitty to a 4.5/5 deal to be one of our top 4

We are signing either Hanzel or Bonino to 4.5/4 year deals to be center either our #2 or #3 lines

We are signing our old buddy Brian Boyle to a 2.5 to 3.0/3 years deal to be our #4 center

We are signing Anders Nilsson to a 1.3/3 deal to back up Hanky.

We do these things combined with the additions today of Andersson and Chytil, both picks I like very much for our future in the 1st round of tonight's draft, I think this would epitomize the retooling on the fly method to a tee and we'd be in great shape to have another fun and exciting regular season, a for certain playoff spot and a strong likelihood that we'd have a team that could very possibly make it to the ECF with a Cup finals appearance not out of the question.

No way we beat Pittsburgh with Hanzel + our current Centers.

Huge holes and I can't think of one reasonable way to fill them. I tend to agree with you as it stands right now.

Maybe Gorton has an ace up his sleeve (or God willing, aceS), but I don't forsee it happening.

I can't think of one team where "Rebuilding on the Fly" resulted in a Stanley Cup.

Only ace would be a Nash deal for a gabby / brassard like deal

Eh, I'd never say never. We've beaten the Pens when they had better center depth on paper than us in recent years.

We beat Crosby-Malkin-Sutter in two straight years with Stepan-Brass-Richards and then Stepan-Brass-Hayes.

Obviously the Penguins under Sully are way better than they were under Bylsma or Johnston, but still, good team scoring depth can overcome having weaker centers.

When's the last time Stepan did this?

When's the last time MacKinnon did this?

He has stupid skill, but then again so did Erik Christensen.

At some point, he needs to back it up with tangible production.

We have 23M in cap room if KK retires. I don't think those moves would fit under the cap.

A Zibs who takes the next step up the progression ladder(60-70 pt guy) as our #1
Hanzel or Bonino as a #2
Hayes as a #3
Boyle as our #4 guy

This would be a group I'd not have a problem going to war with. Is it better than the Penguins group of centers? Obviously not.

But if you combine our center group with Zucc,Kreider, Nash,Miller, an improved Buch and Vesey. Add to that the addition of a Shatty and an inspired with a chip on his shoulder Hank, I'd think we'd give the Pens a damn good run for their money.

Would love to have a chance unlike this past season when we blew it vs Ottawa. I have a strong suspicion Gorton will do whatever is necessary. I trust the guy...I just do. Have more faith in him than any other GM we've had since Neil Smith was in charge until we won the Cup. After the Cup, some Smith impostor took over as his moves were unrecognizable they were so bad...lol

Plus, still have to re-sign Zibanejad and Fast this off season. That will prob be around 7-8m combined right there. And make sure we have enough money to sign Miller, Skjei, Hayes and Vesey next off season.

Yup. I'm not even sure we could afford Shattenkirk, Thornton, and Smith. Assuming we don't trade any other contracts. Mainly Staal.

Right now it is Stepan, Girardi, Lindberg, and Holden out

DeAngelo and Bereglazov in

How about we wait before we see what the team is like and how we will do.

Nah, let's say that everyone got better like we do every year. It's more fun to panic. The canes improved by adding no one. Philly is still shuffling pieces around and adding picks but I guess lehtonen just put them over the top. NJ just added an 18 ok center, so they are in it now. Montreal is probably losing radulov or will run someone else out of town, but look out for them.

Columbus was there already and got better. The caps are worse. The season is 2 and a half months away. Let's wait a bit.

Dylan Larkin is available? Not sure I heard that but I would be intrigued. Detroit won't be taking back past their prime wingers for him though.

Maybe it's just me, but the Sakic statement about possibly keeping Duchene tells me he's dealt today. Probably for a package with a 2nd round pick, not that it will be the biggest piece. Still don't want him.

I still maintain that cap space is a huge asset. We don't have to have our roster set in stone in September or October. Teams panic and make deals after bad starts. Some one will overspend in free agency and need to move a player out. A training camp surprise might make someone available. Patience is key.

I haven't heard about Larkin being available, or most of those players listed earlier.

As most have said MacKinnon would be my choice but the Rangers won't be able to pony up what it would take to get him, unless your moving McD but again that's robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Would make little sense to sign Shattenkirk at that point. Also would make sense to move Nash and Zucc then too.

It's June and we are already complaining about our roster next year. Give Gorton props for effectively getting out from under a rock with most of Sather's bad deals, while also getting younger/ cheaper without a first round draft pick. Oh and he did it by shrewd trades, college free agent signings, and not speninding a dime on over priced FA's. He sold high on two centers (making big time money without being game changers) and a back up goal with one year left for a highly talented RHD, a young center with all star potential, top 10 pick, half of Brendan Smith and CAP SPACE. The man knows what he's doing. He has built a Cup winner in the last 10 years. Everyone repeat after me, "Trust the Process".
