Rumor: TOR and John Tavares close to a deal: 3 years at 7 million

the leafs need to sit down with Tavares and see what his plans are for the remainder of his career. he will probably have a sharpe fall off with his lack of foot speed at some point. I doubt he declines to a player who can put up 50 points for a couple of seansons. He seems more like a guy who will continue on this current trajectory and then at some point fall off the cliff and be out of the league in 1.5 years after that decline.

so with that in mind why not sit him down and plan out the rest of his contracts for his career if he wants to seriously retire a leaf. the 3 year 7 million dollar deal doesn't give the leafs much of a discount. why not go the polar opposite so either do 1 year deals till he retires or if he's looking at 3x7 for 21 million give him an 8x3 million gives him 24 million vs 21 and if he falls off the cliff he can be LTIR and basically be deferred money. as one of the few who think Tavares is still useful on this forum I don't believe the 3x7 will work out as a team friendly deal in year 3.

Well you must love this team because you get six months of regular season and two weeks of playoffs every year. For me the playoffs are way more important and I’m guessing I’m not alone in that.
Nope, you're not the only one.

The regular season means little for this team at this stage; the playoffs are the real season and the regular season is a play-in tournament. The reason this is the case for us is because we have proven that regular season results have not translated in the slightest to playoff success to date, so it's kind of like foreplay leading up to awkward 30-second elderly person sex followed by crying.

No serious hockey fan cares about the President's Trophy. No one remembers the President's Trophy. No one remembers division titles. It's all about the Cup. Nothing else matters. Kill or be killed.

Maybe it's not a matter of cap hit or term, maybe it's a question of whether the guy is a winner or not. This year's playoffs will define this team for the next while.
Why bring him back when he's on the decline and didn't get us over the hump while in his prime?

What's the opposite of close.

JT should be taking a heavy pay cut to prioritize winning in his next contract if he wants to stay with the Leafs and not uproot his family to another city chasing more dollars. Staying home = pay cut.

He has been making 'superstar' money the last 7 years when he has only ever been a 'star'. And he never dropped the mitts once for the TML. Surtax just for this.
