I dont think were in good shape right now

Huge holes and I can't think of one reasonable way to fill them. I tend to agree with you as it stands right now.

Maybe Gorton has an ace up his sleeve (or God willing, aceS), but I don't forsee it happening.

I can't think of one team where "Rebuilding on the Fly" resulted in a Stanley Cup.

This sounds great, but how?

If I knew, I would have his job LOL.

Matt Duchene's name is still floating around as is Alex Galchenyuk (put him at wing?). Joe Thornton is a free agent (maybe he takes a 1Y deal cheap as our #2C)

You have to wonder if John Tavares will hit free agency? There's always Nathan MacKinnon if we go full rebuild? Tyler Seguin if Dallas is in rebuild move?

I think retooling on the fly is a better way of describing it. I mean we're at a point this offseason where they could conceivably ice a better team than last year while adding an offensive minded RD on an ELC and a top ten pick. I think most people would consider that a win.

This team at this point I cannot see rebuilding. Not when they've made the playoffs every single year for the past 12 years minus a shootout loss in one season. Not when the team raises ticket prices by a significant margin again. Not when the team was a few final minute meltdowns away from being in the Conference Final. Not when Henrik Lundqvist is 35 and making $8.5 million.

Semantics non-withstanding, trading your no. 1 center signals HUGE changes. Especially when it's for a high-pick, and from the generally mixed reaction to the pick, I'm sensing we'd have done better to package that 7th OA to get someone else. You do those things to ensure that you'll be able to draft a particular player, and from what people are saying, it seems that guy would have been there at 21. I'm not Gorton or Gordy, so what do I know. One sure thing, now; we have nothing with which to get a Stepan replacement.

Another thing I want to mention.
If Thornton is supposedly a "stopgap" replacement, (which implies that he's just there until X player is ready to take over #1 C duties)Who exactly is his replacement?
This is all providing we can even get him over here in the first place..

I also think that 'who' might not be here yet.

We were supposed to pick him tonight, not so confident anymore.

Lee Falardeau...

Well, I mean that's because that's kind of a tough method of team building to pin down.

I would say that Detroit in 2008 and Boston in 2011 can somewhat fit that criteria.

It comes down to what do you consider to be rebuilding, more appropriately should be called re-tooling, on the fly. I would consider it to be shaking up your core, getting younger and also adding key signings/trades. Basically to try and re-shape part of your roster without tanking.

I also think that 'who' might not be here yet.

Maybe they think Andersson or Chytil can be a 1C if all breaks right.

Maybe Zibanejad becomes a 65 point guy.

Maybe they take a run at Tavares if he gets to free agency.

This obviously requires some foresight, but there is a ton of flexibility now.

I have a strange feeling John Tavares will hit UFA. But he won't come cheap and he will be 27.

I think all of the above is a bit of a stretch and a hell of a gamble to take on with an original 6 franchise

Patrick Marleau plays some C or is he just a LW at this point? Might he be a reasonable target for 1 or 2 year deal? I like the idea of 3 very good centers, I never considered Step a #1 so I don't believe we've lost one. We lost a very good top 6 center but we should expect growth from Zib then Hayes then Marleau?

Marleau hasn't played center since we had Mike Richter

Right now it is Stepan, Girardi, Lindberg, and Holden out

DeAngelo and Bereglazov in

How about we wait before we see what the team is like and how we will do.
