Again, why would we trade Stepan only to acquire a worse, just as expensive version of him?

In the past he has been a 55 point center. He's 3 years younger and would cost very little. I think the Rangers like him. He has skills and he has addded an ice 2-way game. Is he a world beater? No. But can he be a nice 2C? Absolutely.

Stepan for 7th overall + DeAngelo

Nash for RNH

Profit

Could they already of had Nash talk to Joe and say come to NY for 1 yr to play w me ? Would Joe take a yr at a time now ?

We need to continue to purge. Hank will have no choice but lift his no move clause to hopefully go to a winner before he retires. We need multiple low first round picks the next 2 to 3 years for this to
Be done right. Stay away from
Shatty. Stockpile more picks. That's the way to go.

How many teams do you have to watch try this strategy only to be left in limbo for ten years to realize it doesn't work?

I would like to see Holden moved for a mid round pick today. Sign Shattenkirk and Smith. D would be much better then last season.

I think we all are good with Smith 2 and Deangelo 3 Rd . It's that one spot . Shatty scares me plus that's two offensive Rd. A Tanev is a better fit but costly

I think the plan is sign Thornton to gonw Nash or trade Nash for a C

Nash could be here for more run or Gaborik flipped . They have space to eat some of the contrac to get a better return

Trade McDonagh for Mackinnon and call it a day

roll with Mackinnon, Zib, Hayes
hope new top 4 can get it done
Draft d next year or package one of miller/kreider/hayes for dman (way easier to get LD the RD)
don't rush Andersson

Skjei-Shatty
Smith-DeAngelo
Staal-Berg
Holden

or try and trade staal to FLA for Bjugstad hoping he can turn it around

Of all the UFAs Bonino's game is best suited for the Rangers; speed, faceoffs, PKer, playoff performer, winner. If Nash isn't dealt, can you imaging a shutdown 3rd line of Grabner/Bonino/Nash? He's also 29 so if they give him 4 years, he wont be ancient.

If Nash is being dealt however, 50% retained for Marcus Kruger, 2nd, and Ottawa's 3rd. Kruger is a UFA in two years.

Shattenkirk costs nothing but money which we have plenty of. Guy put up 50 pts last year. 50! And he's not redden. Kid can skate all day long. Guys like him and mcdonagh can play till they are 35 with the legs they have.

Righty offensive dmen that can skate don't grow on trees. He needs to be signed.

And so does smith for that matter. Very impressive playoff. Just a glue guy that takes over Girardis pk mins.

Klein leaving not concerned.

Can the Rangers trade Holden or Staal today?

Bereglazov prob not here to play in the AHL.

Joe ****ing Thornton? Have you lost your ****ing minds?

Brian ****ing Boyle? Again, WTF?

Did you not learn ****ing anything with the Eric Staal disaster? We do not need old, slow players who are a shadow of their former selves.

BUT, we still need the defense to be better. I railed against Shattenkirk and he didn't impress me with the Caps, but we can't jeopardize the season again with a dysfunctional D corp so if we have the cap space, I'm OK with pulling an Oshie and signing Shattenkirk to a long term contract that will have to be bought out in a few years. He will be 29 this season...

I thought bjustad too but Fla seems ok on d and they lost jam and smith so need a jägr and vanek resigned more upfront

Gotta be honest, my friends. I wake up this morning and I'm still not happy.

Thought we should've got more for Stepan, and am underwhelmed by our pick at #7. Not that I necessarily think GMJG screwed up - I think events broke poorly for us. The moves were directionally right, but due to the ticking clock on Stepan's NTC and the fact that no one in front of us went off the board one iota, we went from having (IMO a reasonable) expectation of Dvorak/Strome + Pettersson/Glass + Hickey to DeAngelo + Andersson. Big step down in value and not nearly the boost to our rebuild on the fly that I was hoping for. Which is not to say I don't like who we picked up (well, off ice issues aside for DeAngelo), just that they won't be as impactful as I had hoped. I fear we're looking at mediocrity, and maybe we should think about more wholesale changes in the immediate future.

Trade Holden for 3rd
Sniff around on Nash and Staal
Sign Bonino, Condon, Smith, Derek Ryan - call it a day

I was a big Shatty signing proponent but now because of the Stepan move, I think we pass and see how the competition lines up for RD between Smith, DeAngelo, Beargloves, Pionk? or switch Skjei over because of LD depth. Unless we can swing a reasonable RD deal. We have cap space and can wait further into the offseason.

I can't for the life of me think of a single good option that would not only be available, but would be available for what the Rangers currently have.
Sam Reinhart, now reduced b'c he was not dealt pre expandraft, his ELC status does not add value vs that.

Patrick Marleau plays some C or is he just a LW at this point? Might he be a reasonable target for 1 or 2 year deal? I like the idea of 3 very good centers, I never considered Step a #1 so I don't believe we've lost one. We lost a very good top 6 center but we should expect growth from Zib then Hayes then Marleau?
Marleau almost certainly takes less to finish in yr or 2 in teal.

Miller. Our new #2 after Hayes crashes and burns. Calling it
Get in line.
Have called JT as a legit C option for us for some time.
However, this is regardless of the fact, IMO, Hayes will succeed. Hopefully AV is told to stop being such a part of the problem, and he capitulates. Better yet, send him to AZ, even tho apparently we can't get compensation for him.
Addition by subtraction

I can see situations where all of the below are available:
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Alex Galchenyuk
Victor Rask
Nathan MacKinnon
Dylan Larkin
Tyler Seguin
Steven Stamkos
Matt Duchene
Gally only if dirt cheap, not clear if he handles pivot well enough; Duke will cost too much. Outside chance we do something larger w/Buf which nets EKane, and Habs desperately need tufness, so w/adds all around can see EK flipped into AG turned into Duchene.
Can see it, not sayin we wanna go there.
RNH is turd city
Rask don't see he is available/avail reasonably/particularly want
Stammer too injured, NO
Seguin, maybe if the cost were not uber crazy

That leaves Nathan MacKinnon and Dylan Larkin
MacK will cost AT LEAST McD and Skjei, but he might be worth it given age and long term contract at 6ish in place.
Larkin is a terrif fit here.
But he is a favorite son of the area. Fair value would not cut it, and the currency we would have to pony up would hurt too much.
Red Wings spent their 1st [9OA?] on Rassmussen, a behemoth. He is a better acquisition target, but not so clear cut on price. See they want more than fair value, but will sell short for a profit. But what currency to use?

Umm mackinnon or Larkin I'd take in a heartbeat. In mackinnons case he's already better then step
D-uh!:handclap::laugh:

MacKinnnon would be the dream center to acquire. I can't see Seguin ever being available. He'd also be great. Also sick of forever having a team made up of 1B and 2nd line centers :(
yes, but ideally MacK is 1RW here bookended w/Kreider at 1LW, add the correct C.

3X3 for Boyle? **** that, I'd rather just re-sign Pirri for under a mill.

3 mil is lunacy for a 4C

the lunacy is in long term contract duration, not short term salary overpay
3.5m for 1 yr only, some 3/4C, but also some LW on 2nd line, fulfilling his desire to have shot at a larger role, which was why he left.
Again, tight cap mgmt to max opportunities
1 yr only overpay to start

Dylan Larkin is available? Not sure I heard that but I would be intrigued. Detroit won't be taking back past their prime wingers for him though.

Maybe it's just me, but the Sakic statement about possibly keeping Duchene tells me he's dealt today. Probably for a package with a 2nd round pick, not that it will be the biggest piece. Still don't want him.

I still maintain that cap space is a huge asset. We don't have to have our roster set in stone in September or October. Teams panic and make deals after bad starts. Some one will overspend in free agency and need to move a player out. A training camp surprise might make someone available. Patience is key.

Great post!

The problem was Stepan and the drop off in his play. We dodged the Callahan bullet and now we dodged the Stepan bullet. In this era, we absolutely cannot get stuck with NMC/NTC declining assets.

Outside of the top 3, everything else is a gamble so I don't mind a safe pick and a stretch like what happened in this first round.
