I still think that defense is better than plenty of teams in the NHL. Including the Rangers last year when they had Marc Staal and Dan Girardi each play 60+ games at nearly 20 mins per game.

I would disagree.

It's literally Brodin and a collection of bottom pairing defenders.
 
Do we have to use that 3rd protection slot for a dman or can we navigate a three-way trade with Vegas to acquire a dman that we can protect?

the options are either 7 F and 3 D or 7 F and 1 D.. since we have to protect Staal as well we have to go 7-3

Protection lists have to be in 40 minutes from now. Vegas won't have a dman to trade us until they start selecting players, which obviously will be after protections are made. We can't trade with other teams right now. The trade freeze began at 3 EST.

We might make a trade with them for a dman, but it won't be someone we would need to then protect.

No, I understand that we have to protect Staal (and obviously will protect McDonagh), but do we absolutely have to use that 3rd open spot?
 
That's Vegas' defense if they don't make deals to avoid ceci and and brodin. They could actually pull in a haul of picks and assets but put out a brutal ahl defense. They might have a top 2 center combo of lehtera and lindberg. Could be a long year for fleury.

I don't think we do, but it doesn't really make much of a difference. Klein, Holden, Kampfer or no one. Those are the only options.
 
So this is the most I would go to try for both DS and 7OAl following is my outreach on another thread addressing 'zona fans:


it is about the currency used.

A recent parallel, arguably, was Jordan Staal, Pens to Canes. If I remember, 9OA + 2 adds.

There is nobody at 7 who is gonna be LeoDrai or McDavid or similar and be w/parent club in 2 months. It is at least 2, maybe 3 yr development commitment.

While it is fair that we all want to max our returns, I think we can agree here that while 7OA is useful to both, in totality of circumstances, Stepan for basically just that, is not bad return.

The issue has been the +s people have been pushing.
Last yr, w/horrific RD situation, before EStaal arrived, there were discussions for Stepan for Dumba + Wild 1st. Unfortunately, too many people, possibly including an exiting Slats Sather, were too greedy, and started to ask for that, PLUS Tuch, + some more assets.

I had been thinking fair value is
Stepan + 16OA [NY gets by going 21OA + Raanta for 16] + sweetener
for
7OA + Chychrun

Let's see if we can't take this opportunity to improve upon the consensus 1 for 1 deal.

So, obv, Raanta + 21 to you directly is helpful.
We can add a goalie prospect not named Shestorykin. Probably Wall. Does zip for you now, but helps in 3ish yrs
We can expose Klein and make available Holden. Helps at D.
NY adds ELC prospect RD Sergey Zborovskiy
We then add Grabner, who has speed and scored nearly 30 and is expiring, also small $ like Holden.
plus of course Stepan
for
7OA + Chychrun

yes, it is a concession by AZ re Chychrun, but
it is a pick, Raanta + Grabner + Holden [each of whom you can use for flip]
plus 2 prospects

These threads are getting me upset. 250,000 posts since last September but the only trade was Smith for a 2nd round pick. Its like Xmas never comes.
 
We don't know if the Girard buyout is official yet.

For all we know, he hasn't been bought out yet and they're still using a protection slot for him.

So might as well protect Holden, then. Protected list would be:

Nash, Stepan, Zib, Zucc, Kreider, Hayes, Miller

McD, Staal, Holden

Hank

And we lose one of Lindberg, Grabner, Fast, Puempel, Klein, Kampfer, Clendening, or Raanta.

Is that basically the summary of where things stand?
 
If we lose Lindberg to Vegas, you have to think Boo Nieves gets a shot at the 4C in training camp.
