Yup, me too. I thought we might do two deals (or one that killed two birds with one stone): Raanta on the way out because we know we'll lose him; a D on the way in, because the opposing team knew they'd lose their guy.

Oh well.

I guess in the end losing a backup goalie, bottom-six player, or bottom-pairing D isn't the worst thing in the world. Teams probably thought they could get a goalie cheaper from Vegas.

Actually, maybe Vegas getting MAF makes them much less interested in Raanta. They don't need a guy like him because they have a sure fire starter already in Fleury.

I can't imagine vgk takes Klein over Holden given the rumors of his retirement, so it wouldn't make a difference.

In either case, Holden is at max the 4th most valuable asset were exposing. They're not taking him unless we ask them to by giving up a different asset. We're likely giving up the equivalent of a 2nd Rd pick through this expansion draft. Could be a lot worse.

It would make a difference. By protecting Klein and having him retire, you clear at minimum $2.9M. Then whatever else goes with the contract of the player they take.

I could potentially envision a Stepan + Raanta package to ARI if VGK passes over him.

Today has been as lame as can be

The Rangers should bride Vegas to take Holden. Give them a prospect to take him. I bet you they want to keep Raanta. If Hank isn't ready to start the season, they'll need him

I'm not sure I follow you. Klein sounds like he is retiring either way. Why would VGK pick him instead of something they can actually get value for?

They won't pick him if he is retiring

Makes no sense. They need assets, picking him just to have him retire gives them nothing

I think it was -31- who brought up the possibility of Klein bluffing retirement so Vegas passes over him. I don't know if they were ever going to seriously consider taking him regardless but it's an interesting thought.

The Rangers have a protection slot to use on defense. Why use it on a player there's actually a chance Vegas would take? It forces Vegas to take a different defender we don't need and therefore the Rangers could theoretically lose Klein to retirement, and lose a guy like Holden to Vegas. Hence clearing more cap room.

It doesn't matter though. They're not taking a defensemen from us regardless.

I highly doubt a player would bluff retirement for the sole purpose of fooling Vegas.

That is the stupidest thing I have read on this website.

Are we required to use that protection slot? We probably will, but it will be interesting to see whether they use it on Klein or Holden. Though I suppose Kampfer is an option too, albeit an unlikely one. Or maybe we just sign Smith and protect him, even though we could wait until after the ED to sign him.

I'm sure the Rangers had a plan to target a dman in trade that they would then protect, but that trade never materialized.

VGK's defense could look like:

Brodin-Vatanen
Enstrom-Hamonic
Murray-Ceci

Fleury
Raanta

That's better than probably 50% of teams in the NHL
