I'm a bit surprised they didn't trade Raanta. He was the one guy I felt really strongly would wind up elsewhere before 3PM.

Raanta may be their only hope in not losing Lindberg/Fast.

I'm worried that Fast's injury will be seen as a bonus for Las Vegas to select him.

Vegas can leave Fast off the 23 man roster while he recuperates on IR and gives them time to see who really fits and works in their fledgling lineup. Vegas loses a lot of trade leverage when it's time for roster cut down after training camp as everyone will be eligible for waiver claims.

Centers well be hard to come by for Vegas. If they don't get bribed to take raanta by a team wanting to make a trade, I think Lindberg is gone. They can find types like fast.

Yup, me too. I thought we might do two deals (or one that killed two birds with one stone): Raanta on the way out because we know we'll lose him; a D on the way in, because the opposing team knew they'd lose their guy.

Oh well.

Why the heck would they waste a protection spot on Smith?

Protect Klein and hope they take Holden. If they do and K2 retires, the've cleared over $4.5M in cap.

I can't imagine vgk takes Klein over Holden given the rumors of his retirement, so it wouldn't make a difference.

In either case, Holden is at max the 4th most valuable asset were exposing. They're not taking him unless we ask them to by giving up a different asset. We're likely giving up the equivalent of a 2nd Rd pick through this expansion draft. Could be a lot worse.

Not to mention, I think VGK selecting Fast is less likely with his hip surgery sidelining him for 5 months. Losing Lindberg worries me for our C depth, especially if Stepan is moved by July 1.

I see the reverse. Golden Knights have to get to a 23 man roster with up to 30 waiver eligible players (not counting any UFAs they sign). Fast on the IR allows them to hold on to him longer and evaulate all options.

Disappointed that we didn't do anything, big loss if Lindberg goes to Vegas in my opinion, many don't agree but reminds me some of the Stralman situation...

But I am putting this on Gorton, by all accounts it seems like he tried. But there is a systematic flaw in how NHL GMs are managed. Just zero pressure on or incentives for GMs to take any risks.

The flurry of action before the ED turned out to be TWO trades excluding Vegas deals. Honestly, from an objective point of view is NHL teams making two trades before the ED a reasonable number? There is all kind of room for teams to wheel and deal, nobody does anything.

Or they pick Grabner and move him at the deadline to a contender, for a top pick(s), especially if he has a good year.

The thing is, there is no guarantee Grabner will have a good year again, especially on Vegas team.

We don't need to protect him unless he is signed.

Right but we can't sign him until after the expansion draft in that case. Now we can get moving forward, keep him from testing the market and lock down his spot.

I'm not saying it's a big difference but I would rather sign him now than protect Holden. If we had stolen an eligible d from a desperate team, that's another case.
