The only upside to signing Thorton is that he'll be gone in a year I guess, I'm really very wary of his knee injuries and what he'll even have left playing wise

Same with Staal.

I agree that you don't want those guys to eat your bigger minutes like S and G did, but if you do enough to improve your top 4, having 2 players at or close to league minimum isn't a huge deal, just lean heavily on your top 4.

No.

But, if Stepan goes to Arizona and Thornton comes here, it's not out of the question that Thornton puts up more points because he's on a team that scores more, and the HF narrative is that of (ha! Told you Stepan isn't a 1C). Sort of like what's been happening with Skjei and Yandle.
 
There is no way Gorton goes after Joe Thornton. This is dark era type ****. Won't happen.
 
Would not be surprised to see Thornton signed as a stop gap if Stepan is dealt.

Give Thornton and Nash a shot together

Nash Thornton Zuccarello
Kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Vesey Hayes Miller

Your probable top 9 unless we get a domi back somehow

You probably have to trade Stepan and he's got no one to blame but himself. Disgraceful all season and got worse in the playoffs in a key year for this core group.

You need Klein to retire which is very likely.

I think you have to trade Nash too but I'm not sure that's ideal. Think they like him. Think they want to bring him back on a hometown deal after this one expires.

I'd like to think we can make a deal for Holden if/when we secure smith and shattenkirk

You only need Klein to retire. That gives you 18 million in cap space:
4 for smith
7 for Shatty
5 for Ziba
2 for Lindberg/Fast
 
I've officially joined #TeamChaos, let's just make stuff happen :)

1. Trade Stepan to Yotes for futures, #7 being the main piece add a prospect or 2.

2. Package Hayes or JTM with whatever smaller pieces needed for a young(ish) top 4 RHD, someone good, there's plenty out there.

3. Sign Thornton + Marleau on (hopefully) team friendly 1 year deals

4. Re-sign Smith, don't sign Shattenkirk.

5. ???

6. Profit hopefully.

Add whatever other pieces needed via smaller trades or UFA.
 
I could absolutely see the NYR signing Thornton or maybe Hanzal.

I would like to see Lindberg with an increased role if Step is traded, but if the Step trade doesn't happen by 3 Lindberg could very well be in LV.
 
So....
If Montreal can't get a Galchenyuk trade done, do you guys see JG going after Radulov over Shattenkirk in FA?

happy to recognize you as our leader. However, to fold my faction under yours, insist that we not throw out the baby with the bathwater.
The new young core [Kreider, JT, etc] is not ordinarily moved and requires severe overpayment. Also, while they are not married to NYR indefinitely, we are not turning college etc, FAs vs us by pushing the likes of Hayes, Vesey, out the door.
I think we are about 99% on the same page.

AZ just dealt a pick and prospect to Philly for center Nick Cousins. Wonder if that impacts anything.

I don't expect shattenkirk to get 7 mil.

I expect him getting something aroun 6 6.5

I'd love to see him next to mcdonagh and Skjei next to Smith as our top 4. That'd be outstanding.

I'm torn on Stepan I am but he really did this to himself.

So 4M plus dannys 3.1 cap hit for seasons 2 and 3 = 7.1M for Dannys hit and the player to replace him. So yea we aren't gaining cap space unless we just stick a rookie in there.

You don't need a top 4 player to replace him, you can replace Girardi with any above replacement level player.

Then how come Jt Miller hasn't "done this to himself" ?1 G in 41 career playoff games.
 
Doubtful but any chance we asked Nash to waive NMC to be exposed? I dont see any chance Vegas would take him at that cap hit. I know they are starting from scratch but hearing some players they are expected to land, they aren't going to have nearly $8m to throw at a player like Nash.
