I think Vegas is in a better spot then all of those, even if they'll go with building through the draft this ED will give them better assets then those other Expansion teams IMO.

Which means they'll have more and/or better picks, which means a deeper organisation and overall a better chance of getting those quality building blocks.

No, i always thought they would bottom out and build through the draft, don't put words in my mouth, thanks.

I think they're going to be a very bad team for a few years and build through the draft and that they have 0 intentions of trading for any expensive mid 20's players that aren't cap dumps.

You said if they wanted to be competitive, they wouldn't be helping other teams. I simply pointed out that it's not that cut and dry.

I can't imagine any GMs being upset about Las Vegas picking players they left available to be picked. No more than them being upset about them trying to win games against them when they face off in October. And McPhee already has a relationship with most of them.

Pretty big difference between picking exposed players and actively taking a role in ensuring certain players are exposed.

Competitive doesn't mean winning a cup. They can't start a new franchise and let it toil in the bottom 5 for the next few years. They signed Shipachyov. They are in on Dadonov. They're getting Fleury. They'll add some decent pieces in the ED. They'll be players in free agency because they need to get to the cap floor.

Sit back and hope the picks pan out is what the Blue Jackets and Thrashers did. Worked out great for them.

Shipachyov and such can be the buffer vets that add some marketing to the team but they can also be traded away at a deadline to get more picks/prospects.

Like I said, I have no idea what they will do, but I don't think it's a good idea for them to add a bunch of players with longer terms and clauses.

They might, new owners are often operating under very optimistic views and the GMs just do what they have to.

It's too early to tell about the 2019 draft, and it's wayyyyyyyyyyy too early to tell about the 2020 draft.

If Pierre McGuire tells me that a player is from some part of the country, some how has a relative who is connected to the NHL as well as a number of other obscure facts, I will totally believe it. Pierre McGuires thoughts on the draft? Little credibility.

I would argue that it didn't work well for any of the expansion teams from that group. It took Nashville 6 seasons to make the playoffs. 7 for the Thrashers. Minnesota only 3 years, but they missed 8 of the first 11. 8 for the Blue Jackets.

You're right. The difference here is that the rules are slightly adjusted, and Vegas isn't competing with another team for talent. They're also in a very attractive city.

Building through the draft means a lead time of at least 3 years before the team has a reasonable foundation from it, and that's assuming they hit big in the draft itself. That's going to taint the market badly.

And Edmonton. They would still be toiling in mediocrity if they didn't get McDavid. Lets not forget about the Avalanche either. Or Florida. Or Arizona.

I think Vegas will go with vet forwards and build their defense through the draft. All their top directors and scouts are guys who have been good at drafting dmen over the years for teams like Winnipeg, Montreal(Mcdonagh and Subban), and Florida. They also hired scouts who have had no problems selecting russians and euros over the years.

Scott Luce is head of amateur scouting, he drafted Dodonov for the Panthers years ago, thats why they are in the running for him now as a free agent.

Important thing to remember about Vegas is that they have no players in their system at all, using the first 2-3 drafts to build up an actual organisation seems like a pretty smart move imo. I don't expect them to go full tank mode for 5 years but maybe 2? maybe just 1... They'll have plenty of picks 2017, then tank one year for the stacked 2018 draft and then start building towards being competetive, think that sounds like a solid plan.

It's like trade deadline but since June 1st. The league and all the commentators on the NHL channel on SXM were all about "Oh June 1, its gonna blow up. Trades everywhere, players being bought out, yadda yadda". What did we get? A big turd in the punch bowl. I come back and check every few days, and laugh at myself for being so dumb. The NHL got me....

Excellent point. Most people here in Vegas are apathetic about hockey to begin with. Half of them have no idea we're actually getting a team this year. The Knights need to be semi competitive out of the gate to keep people's interest & begin to grow a fan base.

If you've never lived out west, the sports culture & fandom are nothing like they are back east. Lot's of transients & casual fans who only pay attention to the playoffs & decide to get involved when the teams are successful.

That's been my experience in So Cal watching the Angels, Padres, & Chargers; fans who are totally ambivalent until the teams start winning. The Dodgers & Lakers do have big fan bases, but IMHO, the majority are not very knowledgeable & always seem to leave games early.

Fans of the Arizona teams are the poster children for band-wagoners. They take front-running to new levels. I'm assuming it's going to be similar here with the NHL & the Knights. With the Raiders on the way in 3 years, the Knights have a short window to grab the attention of the city with no competition. Making the playoffs before that time period expires is imperative for their long term success as a franchise, so I tend to believe McPhee is being forthright when he says he wants to compete from the start. The owner of the team is in his early 70s, so I can't imagine he'll be very patient.

Their first draft the Preds took 8 players. Their next draft, where they loaded up on picks through expansion and trades netted them 15 draft picks.

Per Pierre McGuire this morning on Ottawa TSN, the 18, 19, and 2020 drafts will be stacked. We better not give up firsts in those years.
I am sure there is a third or 4th line center that will be available for one more kick at the can. That will be a good use of a first. Or maybe we can trade all three of them to Vegas if they would figure out a way to 1) get Staal & Girardi to agree to waive the NMT and 2) take them off of our hands. Another productive way to ensure that Hugh Jessiman is never picked again.

I don't think they'll have any trouble selling tickets. Vegas is already a destination. The arena will be filled with road warriors. Granted, they probably don't want it to be that way, but I still think they have no trouble selling out the place.

They are selling out at a rapid pace already. Vegas has a much better home market of fans than people realize. It won't just be drifters attending these games.

Why not? Sign him through the prime of his career, let him walk when he hits 30

I mean that is the entire point of getting guys on longer contracts...give him a 2 year bridge deal and he puts up 60-70 points per year and then asks for a lot more on a long deal that takes him past 30 so you're stuck with a higher cap hit and the inevitable decline at the end of his contract.

I'm not saying throw all the money at him now but if the Rangers think "young guy who will be a big part of the team for years to come" then lock him up to a decent contract.

That said I'm sure they're not "sold" on him yet and he has to "make a decision about how good he wants to be" and that kind of stuff and they'll end up signing him to a 6 year $7 mill per contract in 3 years

e: sure the player also has to want to make that deal but it does make a certain sense for players to lock in their money now rather than run the risk of not getting a good contract later.

I agree... Basically, instead of signing him to that 6 year $7M deal in 3 years, just do it now, and reap the benefits of the cap space gained in 2 years.
