Not gonna be any news 'til Thursday at noon barring any trades or anything like that.

It's like trade deadline but since June 1st. The league and all the commentators on the NHL channel on SXM were all about "Oh June 1, its gonna blow up. Trades everywhere, players being bought out, yadda yadda". What did we get? A big turd in the punch bowl. I come back and check every few days, and laugh at myself for being so dumb. The NHL got me....

2 more years. He has played 5 years in the NHL.

At his age, a 6 year deal isn't a bad idea. He just turned 24. A 6 year deal takes him to 30. If we sign him for only 4 years, then he'll be UFA at age 28 and wanting a long term contract that takes him to 34/35.

There's risk either way, and a lot will depend on the cap hit.

Whew, for a second there, I thought I'd made a mistake with my 3 x $4.25MM suggestion.

I'd be all aboard for a 6 or 7 year deal in the $5.0-5.5MM range, but if I'm Mika, I don't know if I take that. My guess is that given how injuries slowed him this year he's targeting a 3 year deal (knowing the Rangers won't do 2 years).

Wonder if both parties would agree to a 1-year deal at the same salary as last year, essentially punting this question one more year...?

Even on a one year deal, he'd still get a raise, but it's possible. The only reason I doubt the Rangers would agree to it is because then they'd have to reason all of Zib, Miller, Hayes, Skjei and Vesey next summer, barring any trades.

A 3 year deal followed by a 5 or 6 year deal wouldn't be too bad. That would end at 32/33 and we could trade him a year before.

Deal 1

Skjei and Zucc for Honka and 3rd overall

Deal 2

Stepan and Staal 50% retained for Hanifin

Deal 3

Draft Miri Heiskanen 3rd overall, and immediately at the draft trade Jesper Fast, Miro Heiskanen and 24th for Tyler Myers, Nic Petan and 13th overall

Move 4
Draft Tim Liljegren 13th overall

Move 5
Graves and 4th for Kovalchuk

Move 6
Sign David Desharnaise

Miller-Zib-Buch
Kreider-Lindberg-Kovalchuk
Grabner-Hayes-Petan
Nash-Deshernaise-Vesey
McD-Myers
Hanifin-Girardi/Holden
Bereglazov-Honka
Liljegren as future top RD

Great future. Potential best blueline in the league now and for many years. Could compete instantly. Great depth.

Plus a 1 year right now leaves him 1 year from UFA and arbitration eligible next year. At that point he could just go through arbitration take the one year award/or sign another 1 year, and be a UFA at 26 year old.

3 years leaves him a UFA at 28

5 or more years, that is going to cost a good chunk.

I assume this is partially why Ottawa made the trade.

Yeah, Bobby Margarita broke my heart right away, feels like a 1st rounder going Vegas way from Ducks here, right? In exchange they take a player of Ducks choosing.

That is God awful

So, if Vegas starts accumulating 1st round picks, could there be a deal where Stepan goes to Vegas and a package including, say, Dumba and a couple of late 1sts end up coming to the Rangers for Stepan? Trxjw has been suggesting Vegas as a landing spot for Stepan.

No, it seems likely at this point that Vegas has no intentions of being a good hockey team for atleast 2-3 seasons, they're building through the draft.
No need for Stepan then.

I expect Vegas to have a lot of trade pieces after the expansion draft, which is why I've been pimping them as a landing spot. If they add Dumba and a guy like Ryan Strome from the Isles, is that enough for the Rangers as a basis of a deal if Vegas also throws in a pick? Top-4 righty, a guy they can roll the dice on finding his game again, and a wild card with the draft pick.

I thought for a while it would be Brodin, but he played himself back into favor this season.

What exactly do you have to back that up? I mean, McPhee has openly stated he wants to be a competitive team out of the gate.

Seemingly lots of rumblings out there they are looking to acquire picks more than trying to acquire best-players-available.

What they do with all those picks/assets remains to be seen. Could be a quick-flip, could be a long-term strat.

Time to turn the PS4 off and slowly back away from it.
