Per Pierre McGuire this morning on Ottawa TSN, the 18, 19, and 2020 drafts will be stacked. We better not give up firsts in those years.

It's too early to tell about the 2019 draft, and it's wayyyyyyyyyyy too early to tell about the 2020 draft.

What exactly do you have to back that up? I mean, McPhee has openly stated he wants to be a competitive team out of the gate.

I don't know what they will do or are thinking, but realistically no matter what they do they are not going to be all that competitive out of the gate.

Perhaps they have delusions, in which case I could see them making some deals for younger vets who have term on their deals, but it sure seems like the right play would be to just take the youth/picks back fill the team with the leftover vets from free agency, add them to the vets they took on as cap dumps, dumps that came with picks/prospects. then sell those vets at the deadlines if they can.

They could pretty much rule the draft for the next several years and still be somewhat competitive with the random vets they acquired/signed.

All these comments and things that's coming out from Bob, Pierre, Elliotte etc seems to imply that Vegas first priority is to amass draft picks.

That's what i'm basing this off, if they wanted to be a competetive team out of the gate then they wouldn't be making deals with teams like Ducks, they'd just take their very good exposed player in their mid 20s.

19 and 20 looks good but it's early, and i don't think they look anything close to 18...

2018 however is looking like the best draft since 03, we're still one year out and lots can happen in a year though, but it's looking STACKED.

Time to turn the PS4 off and slowly back away from it.

What? No way. I moved the Canes to Milwaukee and won two cups with Lack as my starter...he actually improved to an 86. Seems legit! Plus look at my moves...Staal got me Rakell and Theodore. Faulk got me McAvoy. Skinner got me Marner and a pick.

Ended up with:

Teravainen - Rask - Lindholm
Marner - Rakell - Mantha
Aho - Bennett - Zykov
Fast - Kruger - Nestrasil
Di Giuseppe

Hanifin - McAvoy
Slavvin - Theodore
Dahlbeck - Pesce
Tennyson/Bean/Fleury

Lack
Murray

Now I want you to tell me that isn't realistic. :sarcasm:

So you thought they were going to come into the league and immediately create contentious relationships with other GMs by stealing some of their best players?

All I've seen is that they're getting compensation for possibly taking on a couple bad contracts to get over the cap floor. They need currency in order to make deals. Picks and prospects are valuable. It by no means indicates that they intend on making a dozen selections in the draft.

Looking at some of the previous expansion draft trades, if I were the Rangers, I'd trade Grabner to the Knights in exchange for not taking Lindberg or Fast. Then they'd likley select Holden or Klein. Yeah, losing 2 players isn't ideal, but it's better than losing either of those guys.

No, i always thought they would bottom out and build through the draft, don't put words in my mouth, thanks.

I think they're going to be a very bad team for a few years and build through the draft and that they have 0 intentions of trading for any expensive mid 20's players that aren't cap dumps.

I can't imagine any GMs being upset about Las Vegas picking players they left available to be picked. No more than them being upset about them trying to win games against them when they face off in October. And McPhee already has a relationship with most of them.

I've heard the same about the 2019 draft. Haven't looked enough forward towards drafts beyond that.

You're trading Raanta before this, I assume?

This too...

Feels like Trxjw is taking this personal, i have no idea why though.

Great future. Potential best blueline in the league now and for many years. Could compete instantly. Great depth.

Competitive doesn't mean winning a cup. They can't start a new franchise and let it toil in the bottom 5 for the next few years. They signed Shipachyov. They are in on Dadonov. They're getting Fleury. They'll add some decent pieces in the ED. They'll be players in free agency because they need to get to the cap floor.

Sit back and hope the picks pan out is what the Blue Jackets and Thrashers did. Worked out great for them.

I just think that if they were really looking to be competetive from the start then they wouldn't take on cap dumps for picks (Krüger, rumors about Kings and other teams) or take futures for not picking Manson/Silfverberg in the ED etc etc... This is my opinion on what i'm seeing, based on this i think it's reasonable to think they're building this franchise from the draft up.

Feel free to disagree but don't go being hostile or putting words in my mouth, thanks.

Per Pierre McGuire during our series vs Ottawa: our defense is elite down the left side and is set for years to come with McDonagh, Skjei and Staal.

Not a bad idea Tawnos, I think I would probably do that if Vegas was taking Lindberg, but if it's Fast, I'd just let them take him. He's an awesome 4th liner, but replaceable.

Edit: I should add this is assuming Holden/Klein have value on the trade market, if they don't, then yeah absolutely do this.

I would argue that it didn't work well for any of the expansion teams from that group. It took Nashville 6 seasons to make the playoffs. 7 for the Thrashers. Minnesota only 3 years, but they missed 8 of the first 11. 8 for the Blue Jackets.

So you're saying our only path to a Cup is not making ourselves a de facto expansion team with a fire sale as many have suggested here?
