Off ice stuff aside id take virtanen on a cheap deal.
Once he's cleared of that accusation man that would've been a cheap buy low pickup with way more upside than Blais. Virtanen is one of the fastest skaters in the league, I think that should be the biggest thing we address now. We added some grit but so many of our players biggest weakness is skating.

Eichel is going to get dealt this week or he starts the season with Buffalo.

The suitors for his services are going to fill their holes via free agency through Danault, Getzlaf, Wennberg, etc. Next year's center free agency class is loaded. Couturier, Hertl, Zibanejad, Trochek, Kadri, Tierney, Jarnkrok, Nic Dowd, among others.

Florida made good moves so far bringing in Reinhart and buying out Yandle's contract to afford cap to accommodate Barkov's contract for next year. If they find a way out of Bob's contract they're in business. Knight is going to earn the starter's net by January by merit. They have what it takes for a deep run. The divisions are going back to normal next season. The Atlantic division is going to be weak. Tampa is going to be good but not as deep losing their whole third line this summer. Boston isn't as deep as they've been in recent years. Toronto will be a good regular season team but still won't have what it takes to make a deep run. Ottawa is on the upswing but not sure they're a playoff team yet. Detroit and Buffalo are still going to be awful. Montreal is in all likelihood going to miss the playoffs. Florida can conceivably win the division and do well if they run into a Toronto or WC team from the Metro that limps in. They're trending in the right direction and are making "now" moves. Barkov is in all likelihood going to extend. They have the cap space and they're a team ready to contend.

The Rangers need to get creative and trade for one of the guys in the first paragraph and discuss extension straight away. I'd also call Seattle and see what they would want for Gourde. Extend Zib if a compromise can be made. Couturier would fit this team's window, roster composition, and locker room like a glove, but would he sign with a division rival?

Several hockey YouTubers were saying Buch is going to get PAID, then went on to say maybe even 4 or 5M. I was like wtf, is that the consensus opinion? Do you think they're out to lunch and it's going to be more like 6-7M? If he signs for anything under 6 this will look even worse. I'm sure he'd sign for less on NYR than STL too.

His comparable is likely the Hyman deal. I think that the organization feels that Kakko and Kravtsov are top 6 players and should have top 6 ice so he was moved but thats just my opinion.

What scares me about all this, I could see Drury handing out 7-8 years like candy.

7+ year contracts can only be given out if the player is your property, so this seems like an irrational fear.

We also have always handed out long, overpaid contracts and it's never stopped us from continuing to hand out more. Cap space is the most overrated thing on this forum.

Friedman on 31 Thoughts said the Rangers and Sabres were never close on Eichel. Compared it to a Venn diagram where the circles never overlapped.

Sabres want "young players on the roster" + Nils, Schneider. Not sure if that was an and/or situation.

It’s pretty clear Buffalo doesn’t want to trade Eichel here btw

Eichel wants to be here, so sending him here has to be towards the bottom of locations they’d move him too

Elliotte Friedman said the Rangers and Sabres aren't on the same page/not close at all in evaluating the Eichel return. The Rangers haven't really been in on Eichel for last 1-2 weeks. The Rangers haven't been the stealth team. The Sabres want Schneider or Lundqvist and the Rangers don't want to go there. The Sabres want some of the Rangers top young roster players. The Rangers aren't going there. If you were putting a Venn diagram together of the request and what the Rangers are willing to give up. There is no intersection of the middle. The Sabres get annoyed when people say the ask is high.

Top young roster players, referring to Laf and Kakko? Or Kravtsov and Chytil?

Anyway, I'm glad that they were never really close with anything. I hope it remains where there are two independent circles that never overlap. Have fun Buffalol.

Well, Ive pretty much shut the door on a possible Eichel trade considering whats just been mentioned. On to plan B. Whatever that is.

I mean even then, the canes took that deal on aho w/o hesitation.
Theres a reason offer sheets don't really happen, and its not "just" the collusion aspect. Its that unless you absolutely overpay for a contract most teams will find the room for it.
Well I didn't say it was the full proof way. And yes, this is in an alternate reality where there isn't collusion.

Montreal simply didn't bid high enough. Vancouver has cap issues as well. GMs should be using the offer sheet to sabotage each other. Benning can match, but Quinn is vulnerable. Maybe he's mad he gets bridged. Maybe someone offer sheets him too. Break up these teams before they are a force. Someone should have sheeted Nylander with 5 years at the 1st, 2nd , 3rd draft pick level, I believe a touch under $8.1 per at time. Match but the player hits UFA during your cup years.

Fitzy's 5 point plan for big happy success

1) Trade Ryan Strome to Ottawa for Ridley Grieg
2) Sign Ryan Suter to 1 year x 5 million
3) Sign Paul Stastny to 1 year x 3.5 million
4) Sign Luke Glendening to 2 years x 2 mil
5) Extend Zibby

Panarin-Stastny-Goodrow
Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Kakko
Kreider-Chytil-Kravtsov
Barron-Glendening-Blais

Rooney, Gauthier

Lindgren-Fox
Suter-Lundkvist
Miller-Trouba

Bitteto

Grieg, Pajuniemi, Schneider, Robertson, Jones start in the AHL.

7 is a max contract, 8 is if the player is on your team before the last deadline.

I mean, what the hell do they expect?

They're asking for $2 million for a house that cost $1 million to build that may have significant cracks in the foundation that may not be safe to live in, and they won't allow any potential buyers access to the inspection records to see the extent of the damage, so to speak.

They have no right to be annoyed. Release his medical records if you want a fair deal. I'd offer only $50,000 and the pen used to sign the offer letter too in this analogy.

The Sabres are in a tough spot. If they keep JE for now they need to decide on the surgery. They can't keep pushing the surgery decision. If he misses next season because surgery was done in October? Yeah good luck trading after that. If they don't do the surgery dispite his request + start the season with him (Reinhart and Ristolainen gone) dispite his request I would not be surprised if Eichel pulls a PLD

According to Elliotte Friedman, who is one of the top insiders in hockey, the Canadiens and Sabres were into “heavy talks” regarding Jack Eichel over the draft weekend. Obviously, it hasn’t reached a conclusion yet, but there is no question Eichel is going to get traded, and these things sometimes take a few days to work out all the details.

Someone said this in the previous thread:

Moving Strome to RW on the 2nd line and moving Chytil to center the 2nd line with weaken this team and expose even more the flaws that reared its ugly head last year. Strome is not a good skater and his forechecking stinks. Can you really see him going into the corners and getting the pucks? Chytil to me is not a center and his future is at the wing. And BTW Strome's faceoff percentage was pretty piss poor so now you would have 2 pretty piss poor guys on the same line. We need to stop trying to fit square pegs in round holes here and have legitimate players playing their position of strength. The best move is to get a legit number 2 center otherwise the moves you mentioned make your second line really a 3rd line even though we have not figured out who the center would be between Kreider and Kravtsov.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I disagree with every single bit of this. Chytil was one of our best C's last year on a per minute basis. He's come a long way and he continues to play at center. Strome is good enough at faceoffs to take them for a line.

I don't disagree about getting a number 2 center, but I am not sure it's happening. Not sure we will spend that money and assets on a hefty cap hit contract. When the organization clearly feels like they should groom Chytil to be a center in this league. A like of Panarin - Chytil - Strome, I don't think would have any problem scoring. And I think they'd actually be better in the complete game than gave him credit for.

Definitely don't believe it would weaken the team though.
