Which again would be absolutely piss poor asset management.

We are not giving Kreider away to get rid of a contract.

End of discussion.

So you would deal Kreider for a nice return then in return flip some of those assets say a 2nd rounder in another deal For day Smith

What’s the difference if it’s with or without Kreider ? All the same in the end

Why would we attach the 2nd rounder or any asset of value to Smith.

We. Will. Just. Buy. Him. Out. At. That. Point

Its very simple. They have options. If they cant move Smith with a 3rd round pick or less attached then you buy him out.

i am firmly on the board of offering names to ottawa for one of macarthur or gaborik, then placing them on LTIR for “cap relief”

makes sense when you notice that not only does namestnikov have 1-year remaining and can be flipped by ottawa at the deadline with 50% retained, but he is also payed less actual salary than either player returning for cheap eugene.

makes sense to me

———————————

you can then trade strome for a cheap, controllable player (hudon from montreal example) and theres approximately 6.5M in relief.

then you can decide to send fox to minors until TDL or keep him up in rotation with deangelo and hajek, which is an option i am opposed to but still an option nonetheless. Tony needs to play a full season, and i really think he can get to 45 ish points this year with 2 PP minutes. shattenkirk can then be moved at TDL to make room for fox, or wait until summer to move/buy him out, and bite the bullet and have him in roatation/scratched at end of season. depending on those other more important matters, they can choose to bury smith or buy him out now, or even use him as healthy scratch

I am not 100% sure how these things work nowadays, but the players are insured so Ottawa aren’t paying the full Gaborik salary if any.

Who said anything about giving away? We'd simply be taking less than if Kreider was dealt on his own.
Well I mean for the upteenth time that this has been refuted, we do not want to “simply” take less for our last high quality asset. It is not necessary to attach a bad contract to him to accomplish what we want to do.

Tony D will probably have to take a crappy one year deal, but with another good season, and arbitration rights he will be able to stick it back to the team.
He would also have to prove he’s not a healthy scratch because of #issues

I’m sure that a 1 yr deal for him won’t be the end of the universe and a problem we would like to have next season when the cap situation is a bit more rosy (1yr contracts much more moveable than 2-year, buyouts are much easier etc)

And again, simply "buying a player out" is less productive than actually attaching him in a trade. I mean you're making it seem like buying out Smith (or whomever) has the same repercussions as trading him. If that was the case, it would've been done already.

I hate to say this, and maybe it’s just me facing reality, but I’m not as opposed as I was to a buyout anymore. It’s is what it is (after Trouba and Panarin). If we have to take our meds because those contracts are that toxic so be it.

It will be nice not having to watch one or two of Smith, Staal or Kirk nightly.

Or it hasn’t been done yet because the Rangers are still evaluating their own situation while monitoring the other teams in the NHL to see what they do in the next couple of weeks, especially with arbitration cases to deal with.

Just because something hasn’t been done at the convenience of your time, doesn’t mean it isn’t going to happen and the door is shut.

They could have potential deals lined up which are contingent on certain things happening for those teams.

A Smith buyout would not hamstring this team by any means.

We are rebuilding, we shouldn’t be signing these type of deals.

Tony has no leverage. His QO has automatically expired. Offer him 6 years at 4m per. It’s fair. He has two options. (i) Sign that contract or (ii) play the following 4 years in the KHL until he become an UFA and sign with another team.

GMs in this league has — zero — leverage, after the player gets arbitration rights. When the player gets arbitration rights he can opt to sign 1-2 year deals until he become 25-27 y/o and get fair pay along the way. Before the player gets arbitration rights, the GMs has — all — leverage. The player can hold out, but for how long is he willing to do that? The other option is taking the QO. That sucks. If the GM sticks a low ball long term deal to a player they can be without — what can the player do?

Team in cap trouble:
Calgary
RFA's - Tkachuk, Rittich, Bennett
~$9.97m in cap space
will most likely send down another d-man so that may create ~$750k in space
- Not fitting everyone

New York Rangers
Well known

Vegas Golden Knights
RFA's - Gusev
~-$4.5m in cap space right now (this does not include the Clarkson LTIR 5.25m in cap space)
- Not fitting Gusev even if he takes $4m

Toronto Male Leafs
Marner
~$3.765m in cap space (this does not include the LTIR for Horton @ $5.3m)
They will most likely send down 1 forward and 1 d-man for an additional $1.5m in savings
Marner is not signing for ~$9.5m per season.

Vancouver Canucks
Boeser, Goldobin
$5.058m in cap space
Will most likely send down 2 forwards and a d-man, say that creates another $2.5m in cap space
They are going to be very tight, I would imagine Boeser takes that up himself

St Louis Blues
Edmudson, Barbeshev
~$4.37m in cap space
They will probably send down (1) player for an additional $750k in cap space
Edmundson made $3m last year, so I doubt they can make this work

If the Rangers buyout Staal and/or Smith, they have replacements coming from within. All of those guys (Rykov, Lindgren, Hajek) areon ELC's for 2 more years. That covers the cost difference between his year and next year

Let's take a look, assuming the following players replace them this year and next:
Hajek = $.833m this year and next
Rykov = $.925m this year and next

Smith

Cap Hit 2020-21
$3,145,833 + $3,700,000 + $833,333 + $925,000 = $8,604,166

$5.7m + $4.525m = $10,225,000
Savings = $1,620,834

When looking at it from this viewpoint, it's difficult to not buy out both players. Yes there is a collective dead cap hit of $2,345,833 n years 3 + 4 but you will still have Hajek and Rykov on good deals just coming out of their ELC's.

I would argue that it would be MORE important to continue back-filling organizational depth to keep good, cheap youn talent coming up rather than attaching any bad contract to someone like Kreider. The value of a young player like ADA, Hajek, Rykov, Andersson, Chytil, FAR EXCEEDS the loss of a small amount of cap space 3 and 4 years from now

I don't see the problem for STL. Edmundson won't be very expensive and Barbashev isn't good. 5.82M seems like way more than enough.

Most GM's say they want to have about $1.5-2m going into a season so they can make in-season moves. Specifically Armstrong has sad he wants as much

lets let camp happen.

im certain there will be guys making this roster we didnt expect and there may be some surprises the other way.

injuries. poor camps. guys that just arent ready. guys that grab attention and an opportunity.

good teams in todays cap world need to have productive players on ELC's playing big minutes. were in a good spot for that to happen. potentially this team could have as many as 4 rooks playing this year. crazy.

august is gonna drag.

lets go already

The Blues aren't 4.35M under. They are 6M under. 4.35M under is counting a 21 man roster before Barbahsev/Edmundson sign. You have to remove Schamltz and MacEachren from CF.

Kreider and Smith to Sharks for Dylan Gambrell and a conditional first

As a sharks fan, this deal would be perfect for us and lines up with comparable trades in the past. Except smith. We just have zero room to take on that contract unless you are taking other guys back which it doesn’t seem like you can.

How are you fitting Kreider and Smith under the cap? And thats with 50% retained in mind.

Currently have 11 forwards and 8 D listed.

Seems like you would be jumping through hoops to make this happen, as would most teams.

And this while still having the intention of bringing back Thornton.

You're correct, I was looking quickly. I said they would be able to send down 1 player, it looks like it will be two for a total of ~$1.5m more in cap space. That leaves $6m.

Edmundson probably wants $3.5m or so. Barbeshev probably is looking at $2-2.5m
